Another Wild Wooly Weekend of Football

Tom Brady has yet again rolled his way into the AFC Championship, alongside Peyton Manning, who represent the AFC in the Super Bowl for the 9th time in the last 13 years. Throw in Big Ben, and you have 12 of the last 13 AFC QBs.

  • Brady has 5
  • Manning has 4
  • Ben has 3

Yeah, that’s 12, but one of either Brady or Manning will represent this year for lucky 13. That is flat nuts. The outlier of course is Joe Flacco. Urk.

  • Anyhow, KC lost a fumble and lost their game. KC once again was waylaid by injuries.
  • Green Bay Hail Maryed themselves into overtime, yet fell to AZ on 2 completions to Larry Fitzgerald. Unreal. GB has a shitty team that is beat-up as well but they nearly won through the force of Aaron Rodgers inability to give up.
  • Pittsburgh got out-FGed by Denver, and their game turned on a late fumble by Fitzgerald Toussaint. Kind of a blehhh game.
  • And in a thrilling game of two halfs, Carolina beat Seattle 31-0 in the 1st half, and Seattle beat Carolina 24-0 in the 2nd half. Nutso game that was nearly the biggest collapse since the 32 point Houston collapse vs Buffalo back in 1993.

Next week?

I think AZ gets beat, and Brady holds his spell over Peyton Manning. The rivalry stands at 10-4 Brady; 8-2 in the regular season, and 2-2 in the playoffs. Curious though is that Manning has won the last 2 meetings, once with Denver Jan 2014, and once with Indy Jan 2007. Brady hasn’t beaten Manning in the playoffs since January of 2005.

Odd, that. But I still think Brady wins.

V will be calling out for his hero Joe Montana at the home. Of course Joe is too damn busy to come but V holds out hope. Stay lucid V and keep away from the white coats.

I’m going with Arizona this week. They’ll have to play a great game (obviously) being on the road, but I think they do have a great game after being out of synch much of the game against the Packers. The Cards will come out with much better energy and I think head-case Newton will make a critical error that will lead to Carolina’s demise. The dude simply checked out in the second half yesterday. At this point, the Cards are my guys the rest of the way. Talk about a beleaguered franchise. They’re due.

I’m not a Brady fan these days, but Denver will have to get a lot more pressure on him this week than the Chiefs did last week. If they do, they have a good chance to win. Their vaunted defense will have to bring the A game. Being at home and at altitude, I’m going with the Broncos, even with the staggering Peyton at the helm. Somebody tell him he missed the memo. He was supposed to retire last year.

    • Winder says:

I’m thinking the Cards too. Who ever makes the fewest mistakes will win this one. Denver has been doing it with smoke and mirrors all year, there is no way NE gives this one away.

Palmer nearly choked his game away a few times. He had a pick in the end zone followed by nearly another one. He was playing g like he didn’t want to blow it. And he nearly did.

A lot of what happened to Carolina in the 2nd half had to do with them going ultraconservative.

  4. Nipper says:

Finally the best teams are playing. Broncos should kick some butt. Peyton probably should retire. He’s just too damn old to take the NFL pressure. Perhaps he has one last game in him.

  5. Nipper says:

Arizona should take Carolina. Newton has a million dollar arm and a 5 cent brain.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Yes they are, Nipper. But they are as valid as the rest of ours.

  7. Winder says:

These games should be pretty good this week I just hope the refs let em play.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Winder, funny thing is, they seem to revert back to pre 5 years ago style of penalties in the playoffs.

  10. Lurker John says:

I rewatched Super Bowl XIX, which I do from time to time (YouTube is awesome), and what was notable, other than the Niners completely annihilating Miami, was the dearth of penalties and the sizes of the players back then. The refs let the teams play and it was great. Anyone remember Keena Turner weighing only 218 pounds? 30 years has made for a much different game, at least in that regard.

  11. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, 300 lb players were a rarity in the 80s. Steroids didn’t become widespread in the NFL til the early 90s.

  12. Irish Kevin says:

If Carolina can put together 4 quarters of good football they should win. They got lucky that they put up 31 points in the first half. I don’t see AZ going down in the first half with a goose egg.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Palmer is the question mark. He looked awful for long stretches of the GB game.

Carolina got a ton of early pressure and that threw off RW badly. Palmer gets pounded like that he won’t survive.

Which is why I think Carolina wins.

  14. Lurker John says:

AZ’s OL is better than Seattle’s, at least in pass pro, so my hope is that that will be the difference. If they can get a run game going all the better. But with Kuechly roaming around that will be tough. AZ will need to get the road graders going.

  15. Nipper says:

In conclusion a loud BLEEP for all!

  16. NJ49er says:

    Peyton….
My shoulder feels like chicken parm….
    I wish I had my younger arm….
    I hope Tom doesn’t cause us harm…
The Defense is my lucky charm….

Fuk’n Nationwide. I can’t those stupid jingles out of my head 😀

  17. unca_chuck says:

    Pretty good Manning haikus, NJ!

Yeah, VD has vanished in Denver.

  18. NJ49er says:

    Peyton…
Blandino! Blandino! Please hear my plea!
I know you’re Officiating on National TV.
If something’s close… please give it to me.
I need that Ring, I’m Peyton Manning.
Hear me ‘Omaha’, many many times.
I entertain for all to see.
I HAVE to beat Brady, I know you agree.
Hook me up Dean. That’s all I ask.
    Flag Gronkowski for pushing off.
It’s my swan song. For The World to see.
We CAN win this game. Just wait and see.
I need that favor. Control Gronkowski!

    • NJ49er says:

      Peyton…
On physical skills I can’t rely.
I’ll need some help to get that Ring.
      Just tighten the Officiating.
From the NFL eye in the sky.
So I can even the Manning score.
Little Bro Eli, you know the guy.
Even us up at 2 apiece.
      I’ll walk away happy.
On this you can bank it.
Broncos and me, playing in Cali.
      Just take care of Gronkowski.
      Maybe Amendola too?
And please, no roughing calls on Brady.
