Let the Sleeping Dogs Die ! ! !

The Brew Crew so far is obliterating the Dodgers pitching while their pitching has shut down the Dodger attack. Not really watching, but hey seeing that 6-2 score yesterday in the top of the 9th was very nifty. Patrick Bailey is apparently putting his stamp on the Guardicles team as he cranks up the power. Yes, it’l disappear like a mirage soon, but hey, ride it while it lasts.

Brewers and Guardicles would be a cool series.

Go Milwaukee! Fuck the Dodgers.

And now without his steroids, Barry is looking pretty skinny these days. The old videos of him so ‘roided up are kind of startling to watch now.

Hey Zum, cheers. Some baseball books I enjoyed reading this season:

Metropolitans by A. M. Gittlitz, off beat take on NYC baseball history and politics of City. He has a political bent, as witness the words “class struggle” in title. good read though.

Crossroads, Dusty Baker auto bio is excellent

Nolan by Tim Brown. at times paean to Texas farming ranching mind set but baseball stuff on Ryan himself and his long career is great.

Unhittable by Rob Friedman about advances in technology of pitching, Driveline, etc.

cheers and enjoy off season/look forward to next year and improved Giants.

for reasons entirely unrelated to krukow I took a look at opening day 1983 and after identifying the howdy doody and Hackman facts that interested me I noticed that Krukow pitched 1.1 innings, giving up 4, as the Giants roared to a 16-13 loss to the padres. What a debut! I’m surprised he didn’t joke about it more over the years.

Kruk and Kuip really were terrific during their heyday. I don’t think I ever heard Kubek, but I heard “hof” color announcers garagiola and mccarver far too much. Kruk was much better than those guys.

Tim McCarver was the worst. Garagiola was fine in a folksy gosh gee willikers kind of way but he knew the game. Kubek was solid as well.

Then you have the yin/yang of Joe and Jack Buck.

Watching NL playoff teams (and Yanks) struck by amount of regulars with OPS under or barely above .700 and low BA who had 20 HRs +. Is this new norm?

Check out McMahon of Yanks, Machado and Bogaerts (14 HRs)of Padres, Swansby and Horner of Cubs, Riley and Albies of Braves. All these teams survived well enough to get into playoffs despite guys who played all season for them and put up Adames like numbers.

Nice to see SPs like King and Schlitter go into or finish 7 despite high pitch count. May this be norm instead of 5 and dive or “quality start” that translates to 4.50 ERA

our old friend Mahle getting the starting assignment for the Braves today.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

1 run thru 7 is good enough for the win. Guys used to come to the Giants to get better.

Where’s Rags when you need him?

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    And Philly wins it. 1-1.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

They gave Dogs hell last year in playoffs. Shut down Ohtani and most of rest of them, just couldn’t hit Dogs pitching themselves.

I know so many folks that hate the Phillies but I hate the Braves more.

What to make of Mahle. Maybe Bochy was right about him (recommended getting him). He mostly sucked in SF. His body language was droopy. He goes to Atlanta and suddenly he’s Tom Glavine. Seems like a pretty damning indictment against Giants’ pitching coach. Or maybe Atlanta’s coach is just so much better.

White Sox eliminating Asstros is fun. Red Sox about to get swept out, can’t hit Yankees pitching, ugh.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, like I said, guys used to come here to get better. Now it’s the oppo.

Fuck. Yasnkers piling on. Fucking Bellinger,

Is PCA the most arrogant white position player to come along since teenage Bryce Harper?

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Still and all I bet the Mets are a little bummed to see how well PCA is doing.

I must have missed something about playoff seedings. Highest always plays lowest, etc. So why is #1 seed Tampa Bay playing #4 seed NY instead of #6 seed Chicago… and #2 Cleveland playing #6 Chicago instead of #4 NY? I also always thought they tried to not match up teams from the same division, but there’s TB and NY, and Cleveland and Chicago. NL is correct, AL doesn’t make sense to me. But then again… so many things don’t anymore…

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

mm in most 8 team matchups (like NBA playoffs et al) the 1 gets the 4-5 winner and 2 vs. 3-6. In this case that’s what happened–Brewers were #1 seed so they get Padres (#4 as top WC) while 2nd seeded Dogs get Braves, who had lowest winning pct of Division winners and 3 seed over last day of regular season survivor Phils (6 seed).

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Again as in NL Yanks had best WC record so they were #4 seed. Unfortunate 3 teams from AL East all made it and AL West was so bad, yet winner 81-81 Houston got #3 seed.

      • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

Thanks, Willie.. yes, I understand how the seeding works (Yanks top WC team is #4 seed, etc.). I just had always thought highest seeds play lowest seeds and middle seeds play each other. As in NFL, it’s always like that. I haven’t paid as much attention to hockey since leaving Boston decades ago, but that’s how NHL does (or did) it too. What’s the point of having seeds if #1 isn’t playing lowest seed, etc. AL #1 Rays *should* be playing #6 ChiSox. So.. I still don’t get it. But I’ll let it go because there are so many other things to worry about………………………………….

Kinda crazy how many ex-Giants are playing in the post-season this year. I started counting and then stopped, too depressing… haha.

  17. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Wow 2 meltdowns in back to back games from vaunted Pads pen, even Miller last night. Brewers getting it done.

    • xoot's avatar xoot says:

did you see the HR the roof turned into a can of corn the other night? (Ridiculous ground rule; like making a bounce caught off the green monster an out.) Padres are snakebit. Brewers may be able to humiliate the bums, though.

      • willedav's avatar willedav says:

yeah that sucked and we can only hope Brew Crew has what it takes this year. Watched Yanks get outclassed again by Rays, ton of errors and not much offense beside Ben Rice.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yea it would be cool to see the Brew Crew get to the Series.

  18. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

I had thought the coolest WS would be the 2 Chicago teams doing a cross-town series. I guess the second coolest would be Brew Crew/ChiSox, just a short drive from city to city. Not sure the Sox have enough, but they are a fun team to watch.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 says:

One of the endless dumb things they do is refer to something as a “rematch” which they’ll do if the Sox play the Dodgers – a rematch of 1959. Like Charlie Neal and Nellie Fox are gonna be there. Chiefs-Niners was a pretty legit rematch. Let’s do it again!
