In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

yeah that Bericoto throw was really bad, way over Koss head as cutoff and headed nowhere near the plate where he had zero chance of throwing out runner anyway. End result was other runners moved up, just type of fundamental air headed mistake Giants have made all too often. Kruk was pretty pissed at him; he has to be smarter than that. Giants have other OFs waiting in the wings behind him at Sac too.

Roupp a doof gave up lot loud contact last night, right from start when Cox saved a long ball right in front of wall in Cf. Plus couple balls deep into triples alley, couple nice grabs from Lee to save some hits and the HR from Veen that went deep into Cove. He’s walking guys, hit a guy threw wild pitch when not in middle of plate with meatballs. At least no backlash to Vitello for yanking him.
Roupp is stupidly intense; determined but unfocused. I have no faith in his capacity to fix his problems. He’s like a low IQ Tyler Walker.

This Rocks team can hit a bit. Given the young Giants LU now, even allowing for the Coors factor, Rocks probably a better hitting team. Pitching, right now arguably as bad or even a little better than Giants. Their defensive stats are relatively equal — they both suck. Coors factor makes it hard to compare stats.
Their comparative records with under 40 games left shows there’s a good shot the Rocks end up the season above the Giants by a couple of games. If so, that should be the slap in the face to the Giants organization that it needs to recalibrate everything they are doing. It should be, but likely won’t. No matter how you slice it, even with the understanding this Giants team is in a de facto rebuild and tryout period for minor leaguers, ending up below the Rocks would be a massive embarrassment.

something else Giants lacking is hard throwing/ high K rate guys in pitching staff. Other teams bring in guys out of pen throwing 96-98 heat with ability to set hitters down with K. Other than Smith, who is also prone to long warning track out (or beyond) Giants don’t seem to have anyone like that now that Miller is gone.

I’ll never fully understand why these guys aren’t more curious about whether or not their blanket “going the opposite way is the key to success” formula actually reflects reality.

Tidwell looks like a potential back end rotation guy for the Giants. He’s tough on RHbatters with that sweeper/slider, but LHbatters take batting practice on him. He has to adjust his pitch approach to LHBs and/or get the sweeper down to them to balance out his batting average against. If he does that, maybe he’s a #3. I’ll take him way ahead of Roupp, who looks like a head case who loses the strike zone when adversity hits.
Question I have is current coaching staff on pitching side able to help Tidwell (and anyone else) get to next level? Other than Smith as xoot mentioned, who else has shown any development?
This is something that plagues system; do you have a plan and can you make it work, in order that Giants in their pitcher friendly yard can stay out of high priced FA market and have enough pitching to compete?
There wasn’t much help this year from Sac; couple Carsons, the McD experiment that ended too soon, Kilian Brubaker and moribund set up guys. Miller was only guy who seemed to get better and he’s gone. So Posey acquired all these high rated prospects in A ball that are in development stage–can Giants coaching staff help them get to ML team eventually?
That is the $64K question that has loomed over the entire Giants organization for a decade. Latest massive example was Kyle Harrison, who seemed to be flailing as a starter with SF, then via the Devers trade he ends up with the Brewers, and suddenly they turned him into a pitching machine – before he got hurt. Brewers are known for their good pitching — what do they do the Giants don’t?
If the Giants management, every now and again, even recognizes, IDs and drafts real pitching and position talent, WTF happens to them in the minors? As Unca has repeatedly pointed out, a lot of or maybe most of the position kids that come up are woefully short on fundamentals — what base to throw to, baserunning, outfielder routes to the ball, bunting, hitting behind a runner, etc. — the list is long of repeated mental and physical errors across the call ups.
IDK how they fix it, or if they have, or are in process. Krukow used to talk about a “Giants Way”, which I thought was BS. SF won 3 in 5 with outstanding starting and Pen pitching, comprised of home grown and acquired arms, and superior defense with decent hitting, also with a mix of farmhands and mercenaries.
Giants need to set up an actual comprehensive Giants Way throughout the minors system and stick to it. They spent millions tricking up that Papago complex in Phoenix — now spend on developing players, not infrastructure. I hope these vaunted high A and AA players are getting the teaching and reps they need to be ready to play when they get up to SF the next few years.
