Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

I got interested in the guy who invented OPS, Pete Palmer. Mathematician, programmer, Yale classmate of Bart Giamatti. Couldn’t’ve done it without computer assistance, if you believe wiki:
“It was during his time at Raytheon that he began working with baseball statistics.[3] At night, after his co-workers had left for the day, Palmer used the company’s cutting-edge computers to run advanced simulations analyzing historical baseball statistics.”
Book he co-authored — The Hidden Game of Baseball — is it really worth reading? Or is his work like Bill James’ inherent in everyday analysis now?
There was new edition of it in 2015. Keith Law liked them (Palmer and John Thorn) and said, “The book is so important that I jumped at chance to write the forward…”
I enjoyed Law’s 2016 Smart Baseball (reread all the time) and he does mention Palmer and Thorn few times in it for their early attempts to get to clutch stats, defensive stats etc. with a more analytic approach. Let’s just say he’s not for everyone.
As a concept, OPS seems like it’s a work of intuition. It’s not really a stat you can calculate. It’s a mashup of other simple, easy to calculate stats.To prove its value as an overall metric for offense you’d probably need a computer. But, I haven’t read the book . . . .
One of interesting things he said about OPS for individual hitters is that it treats both on base pct. and slugging (total bases) equally, which he thinks is flawed.
Extra points of OB are more valuable than slugging when it comes to ability of team to score runs is his position. He makes a comparison btw 2 hitters with same OPS (say .800) but with different ways of getting there–.400/.400 vs. .350/.450. To his thinking, despite the HR power the extra outs given up by the latter hitter would not be an acceptable trade off vs the one with higher OB.
The book was written just as statcast data stream was exploding for all teams, and he hasn’t written a follow up.
Yes, I read the OBP vs. SP criticism awhile ago and even brought it up on the Flap many years ago, probably in defense of Belt :-). I remember some long gone commentator pointed out to me that “OPS wasn’t a real stat” without understanding what that even meant. The issue has some superficial pertinence this season, when the Giants respectable team OPS is weighted towards the slugging, yet runs per game is anemic. But the relative value of OBP to SP, which other more precise stats have accounted for, is a pretty negligible difference on the macro level. The rock critic Robert Christgau came up with a category of artist he labeled “Distinctions Not Cost Effective,” which is a good description of where I personally place a lot of the fancy analytics.

those reviews are really great. the only one I object to may not belong–it’s pretty thorough. Rodney Crowell probably blew his chance(coke and money, maybe) but it’s not as if his only triumph was “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long”

I think next I’ll try to track down the guy who invented the earned run.
