Practice. Practice? PRACTICE?!?!?

Huh. Just saw a statement from Dre Greenlaw saying how hard it was to adjust to Sean Peyton’s practice schedule and that they worked out so much harder in Denver. I always heard that the knock on Shanahanalynch was they ran their practices too hard. I guess not. Greenlaw said it took a while to adjust to the new defensive schemes and such, but he really didn’t stand out this year. I also heard that the team doesn’t stretch enough, or prepare for games well enough. These things are unverifiable by me or just about anyone not connected with the organization.

Beyond that, at least these clowns are talking about all the injury problems they have and that maybe they should change things up. If only for change’s sake.

Dre Greenlaw described his transition to the Denver Broncos as “tough” due to Sean Payton’s old-school, high-intensity, and demanding practice regimen, which differs significantly from the fresher-focused approach of his former coach, Kyle Shanahan. He noted Denver’s schedule involves more intensive, three-hour practices on Wednesdays and Fridays and a six-days-on, one-day-off routine.

Back in the old days, they practiced in the Rocklin heat in the summer, went through 2-a-days, and did a shit-ton of outdoor intense practicing. Well, they moved out of the heat, the NFLPA shortened the pre-season, cut games, practices, and hitting scrimmages. To us, all this means is we get hurt. Every season. All the time. Some teams are at the bottom of the injury list. We have been in the top 5 most injured 7 of the last 9 seasons.

This and Jim Mora’s playoffs??? are two of my favorite sports interviews of all time.

Honorable mention to Singletary’s “I only want winners” drop-trou, and Dennis Green’s “they were who we thought they were!” comment.

  2. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

2strikes already for Steelers, McCarthy definitely wants Rodgers back( knew that one was coming) and he wants to call ALL the plays! Actually with his hire that should be 3 strikes…

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

say what you will about Belichick, but really, no hall of fame? And here I am waiting for Brodie and Seifert.

too funny. Is deflated balls that big a deal?

Jaquiski Tartt (sp), he of 49ers dropped interception infamy, went to the Eagles. He said that he thought the 49ers did a good job of taking care of the players bodies until he experienced the Eagles regimine, which he said was amazing.

The Eagles are repeatedly one of the least injured teams in the league, as are the Rams. What they both have in common is very light practice and intense physiotherapy, rest and recuperation. Call me crazy but maybe copy whatever the hell those teams are doing? Hire people off their staffs?

Denver may be even more old school than the Niners in terms of practice intensity but the 49ers still go harder than other, less injured by average teams and it could be the physio side of things isn’t up to par.

NFL Hall of Fame must be taking their cues from the inept MLB HOF . . . Ridiculous that Belichick was not voted into the HOF.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Yeah Blade,no doubt Belichick is automatically walking thru to Canton his SB appearances and titles along with his career winning pct easily speaks volumes, just another black eye for the NFL!

And speaking of A MAJOR BLACK EYE…How in the world that “Willie Friggin Mays”(who I actually got to see play at the Stick with Stretch,Marichal,Cepeda,Perry,Hart,Davenport etc) the Greatest Baseball Player Ever IMO was not a 100% elected player!!! Only 94.9 pct with 18 players receiving more votes Rivera at 100% to Henderson at 95% definitely some racist voting back then..HOF In Baseball &Football both SUCK!!!

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Dollars to donuts, he ignored a writer(s) that wanted an interview, a quote, or something else . . . These fucking writers (HOF voters) have memories like elephants. Consequently, when vote time came those assholes kept Willie from getting 100% votes.

AK, the more I get to know about humans on this ball we live on, the better I understand why Noah only let animals on the ark.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

There was some sort of unwritten rule back in the day that no one elected to the HoF in baseball was to get in with 100% of the vote.

IIRC Mariano Rivera is the only guy in forever (ever?) to get 100% of the vote.

I mean fuck, DiMaggio and Ted Williams didn’t get in on the 1st ballot. DiMaggio went in on his third try. Third!!! I mean, what the actual fuck is up with that?

Everyone but Yankee fans don’t like em. I don’t hate em but that ’62’ series broke my young ass heart and I’m still not over it today.

  7. Winder's avatar Winder says:

From what I read it was supposedly more about spygate than deflate gate. But whatever all this did was make the HOF voters look like vindictive holy er than thou idiots.

Anyway it’s hard to get to excited about the Giants off season but I still can’t wait to see our new manager do his thing. Maybe our kids in the farm system will take to him. Pretty sure we will be running busses back and forth for quite awhile.

  8. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

Yes, apparently there was one person who wanted to stick it to Belichick, so he lobbied other voters to vote ‘no’… but he said it was only for the first year. After this, he said Belichick deserves to get in. So, a bit more about that “first time” thing… Whatever.

Yeah, Winder, very unimpressive off season for our SF Giants. I wasn’t sure what all was going on or not going on, since for some reason, MLB is a forbidden website “over here”, so I just haven’t been able to keep track of things. But once I did catch up, I was pretty shocked to see sportswriters saying that the starting rotation is all set. I’m actually not worried about the offense, Bader is a nice addition, but I have no confidence in the starting rotation at this point…

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah Paul even though our off season signings were not splashy I think we picked up some pretty decent ball players here and there. We still seem to be in the Brebbia isle more than I like but maybe things will click. I still think Posey knows what he is doing.

Nice collection of John Brodie highlights here. Note the number of touchdown passes to the great Gene Washington! One of my favorite players growing up:

  10. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Hard to see how Belichick doesn’t get into Canton. Smacks of politics to me.

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Great Stuff Lurker thanks for finding clips of the early hard nose games! Those days were so great to remember back on.John Brodie to Gene Washington (he was the best deep threat they had back in those days, so when they connected it was always awesome!),Brodie to Dave Parks,Brodie to Dick Witcher,Ted Kwalick,RB Ken Willard Paul Hofer, and on Defense it was LB Dave Wilcox and CB Jimmy Johnson teams avoided to exploit much!!(Picked on Kermit Alexander instead)Also LB Frank Fudge-hammer Nunley (how fly is that nickname?)

And you know what to me the NFL music soundtrack intro was totally BITCHIN BACK THEN!Wish they would incorporate some of that awesome stuff again..

  12. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Hey Loco hope all is well and that you stay safe you have some real stuff heading your way this weekend.

  13. Berger's avatar Berger says:

A John Brodie highlight film could be used as an instructional video to show what proper fundamentals look like. His throwing motion was near perfect.

  14. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Column in Chron today from Killion (normally non read for me) about new 4 part documentary on Walsh/seifert 4 SBs era, premiered at Alamo brew place in SF recently to be shown next week on AMC. Eddie D and lot of others attended, Brady narrated and apparently was driving force behind the project, obviously long overdue. Should be good!

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

it’s called ” the Rise of the 49ers”, backed by Brady’s Religion of Sports production company. Killion said Brady’s family had Niners season tickets at the Stick and his “love of football started with these guys.”

And of course Brady shares HS alma mater with our own Unca Chuck and Barry Bonds, Serra of San Mateo.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hah! Yeah I was 3 years ahead of Bonds at Serra. Saw him play baseball as a freshman hit balls over the El Camino into the building across the street.

“This is Tom Shane of the Shane Company! On 2nd Ave and El Camino in the Stuckey’s building!”

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Damn. That Brodie video is awesome. I loved watching Brodie throw cuz it looked like he put so much spin on it that it HAD to be a spiral.

I was at a couple of those games. Whitcher Windsor Kwalick Washington Owens, shit even Ken Willard and John David Crow make the vid!

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Interesting thing I noticed is how well Brodie could move, especially earlier in his career. He was a really good athlete with that classic drop back QB style, but he was no tree in the pocket. He ran well.

  16. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeah, Kat, Kwalick was another favorite of mine. I was just looking at some of his stats and he averaged 18.8 yds a catch in 1972, and unbelievable number for a TE in that era, or any era for that matter. He was an All-American at Penn State and had a fine career with the Niners. Went on to become a successful businessman after football.

And what to say about Dave Wilcox? Dude was a badass, one of the best linebackers in football throughout his career and Jimmy Johnson was one of the best cornerbacks during his career.

No question about it, the Niners have had a lot of great players over the course of their long colorful history. Those early ’70’s teams were good enough to win the Super Bowl in my opinion, especially that ’72 team, they just couldn’t quite get over the hump. Fucking Cowboys!

Those old highlight reels are a blast to watch!

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Those early 70s teams were so fun to watch. I first started paying attention in 1968 and my cousins (all Bears fans) would commiserate over the ineptitude of our teams. Till 1970.

Tommy Hart, Wilcox, Cedrick Hardman, Skip Vanderbundt, Charlie Krueger, Cleveland Elam all came together on that killer defense. And like you mentioned, Jimmy Johnson (his bro of course was the Olympian Rafer Johnson) and the stage was set for the Super Bowl but it nerver came to pass.

Those playoff losses, esp 1972, still bother me.
