Man, this sucks. When I was young, he was my first favorite QB. Our neighbors across the street had season tickets to the 49ers (in the east end zone at Kezar). So I got to go to a game in 1969 vs the Colts. Close game, and late in the 2nd half, the Colts put in Johnny Unitas to try and mount a comeback, and they did late the lead in the 4th quarter. But Brodie got the final TD and the Niners won 20-17.
I went to the Bears game that year as well and was hooked for life. Saw a bunch of Brodie’s games at the Stick as the team rode his shoulders to 3 playoff runs, including the comeback from injury to lead the 49ers past the Vikings only to have our hopes dashed by Roger Staubach’s (fuck preston riley) late comeback. Saw his last game in 1973 as well.
Quiet and steady, he didn’t demand the spotlight like Namath and others but he should be in the Hall of Fame. His numbers are markedly better than Namath’s. But whatevs. He retired from football to become one of the top guys on the Senior Golf tour. When they were still allowed to call it Senior.
So raise a toast to Brodie. A guy who took a lot of shots, had shit thrown at him for half his career by the unruly mobs that passed for Niner fans back in the day, and ended up almost climbing the mountain to the top. RIP John.

Like you and AK, he was the first QB I followed growing up (well, Y.A. Tittle too, but I barely understood the game then). Brodie and Gene Washington were my Niner football heroes back then.
Indirectly, I knew his son, i.e., he was always at the Los Altos bars I hung out at in the early 80s, particularly the Los Altos Bar and Grill on Main Street. Good times . . .
Really sorry to hear this. My earliest memories of the 49ers are with John Brodie at quarterback and my dad was a big fan of his. He was a fine QB and underrated as well I believe. He was a part of some big 49ers wins and on some really good teams. He led a good, long life. RIP, Mr. Brodie.
yeah solid QB in his day through ups and downs. Kezar could be brutal place when things weren’t going well.
Another sad day. I loved the way Brodie played the game and if he didn’t get hurt so often we probably would have won a lot more. He was pretty accessible around town and I did get to meet him and we talked for a bit. A real nice guy. Glad he lived to 90 RIP.
49ers Legend!
RIP John Brodie.
DT Jordan Elliott was asked what he thought of rookies CJ West and Alfred Collins after the season.
He said they were both very impressive but CJ was really impressive.
That was my thought too. Stats wise over the course of the full year neither guy was good although Collins had 2 really big plays. But by the back end of the year both guys were playing at a starter level and IMO CJ showed more than Collins.
CJ is lower to the ground. He really showed well at the end of the season. I was disappointed they did not play him and Collins more. Collins will take longer because he is taller and plays higher. I think both will be starters. I think West will be better next year, even though both will be good. I think Collins will be a star in year 3 with the possibility of West being a star too.
We need a pure pass rusher. I like R Mason Thomas in the 2nd round, or if we trade back with our first pick an end up with a higher 2nd round pick.
We both see it exactly the same Berger although I dont have a particular draft pick in mind for edge rusher yet.
R Mason Thomas is just the first player I have identified because it seems like he won’t need a first round pick. I am still processing who I want. When I posted his name last week, I was thinking 3rd round. I now know he will go late first to early third.
My first favorite player was John Brodie. He is still in my top 10 but he was the first player I had chosen as my favorite. My mother waited on him many times. She said he was a great guy. One of my best friends golfed a round with him and said the same thing. I remember he had a couple of steel ribs. He was as tough as they came. RIP John Brodie, may God bless him and his family.
Pretty cool John Brodie story here, reveals what kind of man John was. He was certainly larger than life for me as a kid:
McCarthy coaching the Steelers. Rodgers goes one more year? He did get them to the playoffs.
John, thanks for sharing that video remembrance . . .
Absolutely, Blade.
The Steelers are taking a lot of heat from various corners for the McCarthy hiring. Many believe they should have gone the younger route and hired one of the several talented up and comers out there. After years of Tomlin, that seems like a logical take. Start anew with some new blood.
Yeah Agree Lurker this is a stupid terrible hire by the Steelers and their continuing old school approach.Fat Ass McCarthy really? God almighty this reeks of Aaron Rodgers making this call for 1 more year and the Steelers bought in .It’s ridiculous and you can bet for sure the Steelers fans are irate!!!
Exactly, Kat, this has Rodgers written all over it.
What a conundrum! Great game between Patriots and Broncos, but I HATE both teams and can’t root for either team. lol
saw somewhere that going from Tomlin to McCarthy is like shitting your pants and changing your shirt.
Fucking Peyton chased the FG he didn’t take in the 1st quarter for the rest of the game. Ooops.
I’d be surprised if the Rams win but they look good against the Seattle D.
Well that was a colossal fuckup by Rams punt returner Smith fumble leading to a TD.. Shades of are own Kyle Williams against Giants which cost them a 49er SB appearance..
Wow now the Rams respond for a Touchdown cutting it to 24-20 Seagulls..
Fuck McVay. I can’t stand his face . I guess I want Seattle?
Yeah, I hate em both too but I still hate the rams more.
McVay does sorta have that rodent look.
He might be the bastard kid of Mike Shanahan.
LMAO Blade I definitely think your on to something there!🦫
There were so many reasons I wanted both teams to lose, but good for Darnold. He came through every time the Rams tried to come back. And Riq Woolen has to be breathing a huge sigh of relief. His 3 fuckups in 4 plays nearly ruined Seattle’s shot.
And Minnesota absolutely shit the bed letting Darnold go.
From Niner Noise, running backs the Niners should look at in the draft
“Emmett Johnson
“J’Mari Taylor (Virginia”
“Roman Hemby (Indiana)”
None of the above. Unless they are 5th rounders.
We have enough RBs to go around. There are folks out there saying we should draft TE with our 1st pick.
We need 2 O line picks, a DE, and then address the WR spot. TE is way down the list.
