Game II – The Big Easy?

Well, we go off to N’Awlins for game 2 of this injury-plagued season. No Purdy, no Kittle, a banged up O line? No prob!

Still think we can pull this off. I’m thinking 20-9 or some shit. The defense will only improve as the season goes along, and this should be shake rattle and roll.

This will be a test for Jones, Purdy would be able to drive the ball down the field for a TD or at least a field goal

  2. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

2 in a row, looking better than Moody already

  3. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Somebody must have said something to the Oline, cause they are playing outstanding

  4. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Hmmm…spoke too soon on the D?

  5. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Okay, I admit it I was very wrong about M. Jones, he is a capable QB

  6. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Ben Bartch exited in the first quarter after being rolled up on, though he was able to walk off the field under his own power, albeit with a noticeable limp. Rookie Connor Colby stepped in to replace Bartch at left guard.

The 49ers initially listed Bartch as questionable to return with an ankle injury before later downgrading him to out.

The D can not give up a TD

  8. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Good job D, now the O needs to put it away

  9. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

If they get within FG range, less than 40 yards, they would win

That right there is the difference in this year and the last 2 years, they would not have blitzed

The Niners should just pay saleh, what ever he wants

Congrats Mac Jones, 3 TD and most importantly a Niner win!

  14. Whack Mac Jones's avatar Whack Mac Jones says:

They barely squeaked by another bad team. I am not impressed. They will be crushed by a real team like the Rams.

  15. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Berger Musings! Mac Jones looked really good. The rookies got burned some, but they played well as a whole. Mykell Williams was fantastic. Alfred Collins showed up nicely. Great game by Winters, he sure reminds me of Greenlaw, including the hit out of bounds. Renardo Green had a suspect game but did good in the 4th. Conner Colby looked decent. Our young DTs are a year away from dominating, they made just enough plays today. Did I mention Mykell Williams, he’s already getting more double teams than any other lineman.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

The stat I read about Mykel was that he gets more double teams than any other DE, but he’s not primarily playing DE, he’s playing DT.

He is playing well, holding up well and even collapsing the pocket sometimes, very encouraging.

I didn’t think much of Alfred Collins today, he needs a lot of work and snaps.

Winters should change is number to 57.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

They are moving Williams around a lot. He is even dropping into coverage. From what I can tell, He is playing DE on run downs, and DT on pass downs. But this isn’t always the case. He physically dominates. He will need more moves, but is really showing well, so far.

went to Aptos to see family so hear most of the 2nd half on the radio. Curious about the fumble. Did jones hold the ball too long?

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

He was going through his reads. He reared back to throw, and a DE hit the ball just before the top of his delivery. Jones was really good with his reads today. I thought he would be decent, he was actually good. That play just took too long to develop and our O-lineman got beat.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Yes he held it too long.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Safe to say, these 2 games last year are losses. Robert Saleh’s defense isn’t perfect but it makes impact plays when it is crunch time.

Jones looked good. He hit the ones he needed to. Esp the crosser to Jennings.

  18. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Didn’t watch the game but looked at the highlights this morning. It was a good win on both sides of the ball. These first two games are like an elixir for the new guys and a great way to introduce them to 49er football. Barring more injuries things should only get better. Looks like we have two good QB’s and that means a lot.

  19. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Mykell Williams had a play where he stood up his blocker and the ball carrier had to decide which way to go. He went outside and Williams shed the blocker and tackled the runner for a loss. It was as impressive play as you are going to see. this guy is going to be fun to watch.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yup. Williams had a great game. Was it Collins that was getting pushed around? He was playing way too tall.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

He was, he is not a run stuffer yet. but we got pressure on the QB with him in the line-up. They will figure out how to best use him. It looks like he is more of a pass rusher right now. I predict he’ll an every down player by end of this year or beginning of next year.

  21. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

PFF listed Mac Jones as one of the 5 worst players on O, gave him a 58.something rating.

It’s hard to see PFF as a credible rating organization with shit like that.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    He had a 113.2 rating. That can’t translate into a 53 QBR.

ESPN has it listed at 67 fwiw.
