Strange, but a friend of mine used to call cigarettes bartches. As in “Lemme have a bartch.” Dude was bumming all the time. I guess as a sign that we like the guy, the Niners signed Ben Bartch, a left guard who was playing pretty well for a couple games before getting IRed early last season. It would be nice to build SOME depth before wading into the draft pool in a couple months, so there’s that.
Other than that, there’s just the wild speculation around who we pick. If we trade up. If we add Deebo into a trade-up and such. Not much unless we make more signings before April 24th.
Aaaaand baseball is back! Well, spring training has started. Spring is springing eternal and we will see if the Giants have something with their young pitchers, Verlander, a solid left side of the infield, and a whole lot of the same-o same-o.
Yaz, Wade, Hicks, Flores, and the usual bunch of retreads doesn’t thrill me, but Lee healthy should be fun, Adames seems like a legit guy who is a solid character, Chappie should be good as well. I think the rotation really comes down to how well Rachel Ray does. We need to get solid numbers from him. Verlander? Man, who knows? But Webb should be his usual bulldog self.
After Webb, Ray, and Justin, we have Birdsong and Dirty Harry rounding out the rotation. I haven’t heard if we are going with a 6-masn rotation like some other teams have brought up, but this pitching by committee and opener type shit needs to stop. To that end we have Beck, Black, Roupp, Hicks (back to the pen), and Winn (and a few others) waiting in Sacto. With the A’s!
So, we are playing for 3rd place? Our division is rough, let alone the rest of the NL. Gonna be a weird year I’m afraid. The Dodgers signed FOUR of the top 25 free agents. After winning it all of course. AZ got Corbin Burnes (Goddamnit!) and the Pads haven’t been nearly as splashy, but they aren’t gonna be soft either.
A lot (Bryce Eldridge?) has to go right for this teams to be competitive all year. We will see.
Read a little snippet about ST today that said we won our first two games now I know it’s just ST but IIRC it took us about a week and a half last year to get our first two wins. They said Birdsong and Logan pitched real well and Bird hit 98+ on the gun and felt real good about it.
Msn truly sucks in fact it’s worse this year than it usually is. I don’t know who these football rumor mill guys are but they are totally full of it. Complete waste of time.
Indeed, welcome back, baseball. Should at least be an entertaining year for the Giants, since it sounds like this season will be dedicated to seeing what they’ve got, especially the pitchers. I think 3rd place in the division is a stretch, as the current makeup of the team didn’t get any better than AZ or SD in the offseason, but you never know. “Yaz, Wade, Hicks, Flores, and the usual bunch of retreads”… I actually would have no problem with all of them being on the team; as bench players, not as starters. If they’d gone out and acquired better players just for RF and 1B, then maybe they’d move up in the division. Might also be interesting to see what they do with Eldridge. They say “probably not this year”, but he might force their hand sooner rather than later. Play ball!
I believe if we put some youthful spirit back into this team we could do great things. Pretty doubtful we can stand up to the dogs and pads but all we need to do is beat em enough to make em take us seriously. I still feel way better about it now that Buster’s making decisions. We will see just how far of a leash the brass has on him. I am pretty sure he’s focusing on our minor leagues a lot so that at least says there’s hope for the future.
Combine week is here.
My DVR is set.
Let the evaluation process begin π
THREE 1ST RD PICKS!
But, hey, we got a 4th in return right?π€¬
https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/former-no-3-overall-pick-trey-lance-to-hit-free-agency-after-5-starts-in-4-years
Big mistake but I understand why we did it. I just hope KS learned that he is not the best evaluator.
Shanny was hell bent on replacing Jimmeh at the time and overreaching for a QB happens all too frequently. At the time, Lance had played a total of 1 game if memory serves?
Now there are reports that he won’t attend Combine week. At this point it might be a good thing in the sense that Lynch is likely shopping for more pieces for the D. For me, players have to fit not only on O or D but within the locker room. If a HC isn’t evaluating the roster in conjunction with the GM I feel as though they leave themselves open to mistakes.
Just trying to find some piece in very fucked up world. I can lose myself in baseball and football for only so long.
Yep. Warren Buffett pulled out all his money from the market.
Thinking of doing the same.
Lot’s of big names in this game.
Lance had one great year in college. 2019. He finished the season completing 192-of-287 passes (67%) for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns, and no interceptions while also rushing for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns.
42 TDs, no picks, and close to 4,000 yards.
Fortunately they found Brock on the cheap which masked the stench of giving up Draft capital in the end.
Purdy put in almost 50 college games to Lance’s which was under 20.
Water under the bridge now, and it bought us a few years of Cap relief on his rookie contract at least.
They’ve missed with so many high picks, so it isn’t like they really were crippled by the deal, but their depth is shot.
Without Brock, Jed very well may have fired them.
And our backup catcher Tom Murphy avoided the rush and hurt his back.
Dude is always hurt, he’s useless. 2 other catchers in camp are also below mediocre. Giants really need a co-catcher, not just a backup catcher, to spell Bailey more often so he can actually produce over a full season. I feel like they’ve done that before, 2 catchers, no backup… Torrealba? Estellella? Maybe not. Hope they can find one before opening day.
You would think with Buster in charge they must have some backup plan. I think Huff has some potential.
Agree, Buster would know what to do better than anyone.
In an interesting development Brian Griese is out after 3 years as QBβs Coach and Mick Lombardi will take over the position.Hmmm? Not sure how this will workout for Purdy as Griese was instrumental in his development in their 3 years together..
That is interesting since they have been lauding his work for the last few years. Maybe has a better job offer.
Griese apparently is giving up coaching altogether per Eric Branch.
Branch said that Griese had considered leaving coaching in 2023, after his first season with the 49ers. His wife and two children remained in Denver during that time, making the decision to continue coaching difficult. After “weighing family considerations,” he ultimately chose to stay in the role.
“It’s not the easiest thing in the world to be away from them,” Griese said in June 2023, per Branch.
His decision to step away may also explain why he didn’t interview for the Jets head coaching job.
What I find most impressive about Griese is he had Purdy the highest ranked QB in that draft and put his name behind him. Now admittedly it wasn’t the most talented QB draft that year, but to stake your reputation on a small school, small framed QB like Purdy takes huge cajones.
He turned out to be right as Purdy is the best from that draft.
Now comes the fun part. Getting him signed.

Combine week is also the start of pre-draft wheeling and dealing.

Well, I wouldn’t mind getting a top notch backup for Kittle myself. He’s a weapon.
https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/188958-49ers-writer-makes-first-round-draft/
The backup TE spot is nearly as hard to fill as the backup catcher spot on the Giants. Voght was good, and now he’s a hell of a coach.
Deebo trade scenario appears to put the team between a rock and a hard place.
IF…
San Francisco trades Samuel before June 1, the 49ers would absorb a $31.55 million dead money hit on the cap. Samuel is also due a $15.4 million option bonus on March 22, which should likely motivate San Francisco to try to get a deal done before then.
I think teams will hold out or offer very little they figure we are gonna cut him anyway.

Some very good depth at the Dline position. Hope Lynch & Co can hit on some winners. Impressed with Pearce, Harmon, and still like JJP.
Yeah lots of D line talent for sure NJ..
Pearce running a 4.47 forty quite impressive his stock just shot up more..
Itβs going to be exciting what the Niners do, they could try and move up to Jaguars pick giving up their 11th and a 3rd rd pick?and get DT Mason Graham are move back get an extra pick and still get Banks jr, are Walter Nolan ?
Rumors are that Chiefs F/A LB Nick Belton (26 and a complete beast as a tackler/ coverage guy as well as getting after the QB)will not resign with them. Pair him with Warner and it would be terrifying combo.
Yes I believe Dre Greenlaw (still love the guy)is moving on and his injuries took its toll and like Walsh use to say better to get rid of a player a year early then a year to late..
I love Dre as well but health is a major concern following his injury battle. I’m with Walsh also, brutal game and a year early outweighs a year late.

Nice rundown but still all have some flaws or issues. I don’t really care if we go either line all I know is we have to hit on our low rd picks. There is so much smoke and bullshit floating around it’s hard to pinpoint anything yet. FA is gonna be where we figure just what direction we go in the draft. Still it’s fun to hope.

This kid lit it up –
Big safety puts on a whale of a show. On Thursday, Nick Emmanwori hit the podium and made a confident proclamation: “A safety like me hasn’t come through this league in a long time. Lotta size, lota speed, lotta ability.” On Friday, the South Carolina product hit Lucas Oil Stadium and backed up those words with some jaw-dropping actions.A supersized safety at a hair over 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Emmanwori put on quite an athletic display, first pacing the position in the vertical leap (43 inches) and broad jump (11 feet, 6 inches). (In fact, those two marks are the best at any position through the first two days of the combine.) Then he took to the track and blazed a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, trailing only Kansas State’s Marques Sigle (4.37) among safeties.

Breaking News by Alleykat ..
Deebo Samuel traded to Commaders for only a 5th rd pick in this years draft.. 21.5M off the books β¦
Daniels,McLaurin,Samuel pretty solid weapons..
An extra pick to deal up with too.
At least he’s not in our division. I would keep all our 5th rd picks

Wow. After Shanny basically kowtows to Deebo last year, they deal him for a 5th round pick and take a $31.5 mill cap hit?
Wow. Pretty sure Aiyuk ain’t gonna be ready. These guys baffle me a lot.
We just got hit with the WR syndrome. Both got a lot of money and just didn’t put out the effort last year and with Aiyuk this year I don’t think it will be any better. I think the money really went to his head. I would get rid of him if possible. And I really like his game the same with Deebo but they don’t put out the effort then fuck em.
I guessed/hoped for a 4th rounder for Deebo, but all things considered a 5th was probably fair.
Word is BA is being asked about for a trade. Whilst I didn’t believe the Niners were keeping Deebo, even after Lynch made it sound that way, I also don’t believe the Niners will trade BA now.
Lots of things can change, but the overriding issues are the way his contract is structured and the severity of his injury causing concerns over his ability to effectively return to his peak form for a prospective new team, leading to low ball offers.
I don’t see the Niners getting enough value to have a trade make sense, although after the way he behaved to get his bag last year I ersonally wouldn’t mind seeing him go.
I agree as long as he is unable to play there won’t be any serious offers. I read somewhere he won’t be ready until the 2nd half of the season if then.
