The Search Continues . . . and Baseball is Cranking up

The new DC candidate comes from our adversaries the Chiefs. KC DB coach Dave Merritt is the latest guy on the radar. He has been an underling of Steve Spagnulo for years, even with the Giants, and Shanny may be looking to incorporate more of the riks-taking into his defense.

Spagnulo certainly has our number. Hey, he sounds fine. As I’ve been saying, we need to take more risks on defense, and we need to avoid Brandon Staley at all costs.

As far as baseball goes, the Giants are once again doing little to nothing to strengthen the team in any meaningful way. We have 2 starters in our rotation. Is Soler the RH power bat we’ve been searching for? Well, he’s 32 and we will see. He’s better than Haniger anyway. But we still have an anemic lineup full of Yaz’s and Slaters that doesn’t scare anyone, and our bullpen will be a bunch of tired arms by the break.

Oh yeah, that’s when all our IR pitchers will come to save us!

I’m so sick of Farhan and how cheap the organization is with the money they have and the stubbornness they’re showing getting a quality arm thanks asshole Greg Johnson with your “Just like to break even statement!(even Melvin is begging for more help and probably is pissed at taking this gig now!)like Snell are even Montgomery with a starting rotation in shambles with injuries to Beck and a dicey Winn? Who the fuck wants Highway to Hellhole Hejle as a 5th starting option???

And get Chapman as well his glove alone( multiple GG even platinum)is worth it.And he still has power which this club lacks!

  3. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, I gotta agree things are looking bleak. Every time I visit the Giants page there’s another injured pitcher and fuck we haven’t even won a game yet unless we did today I haven’t checked. I am all for the young pitchers getting in some work and keeping them up for as long as they can but to count on them isn’t a good bet. Hopefully we can stay in the games and get some timely hits cause I still think we might be pretty good if our pitching is good.

I still think Vrable would be the best fit for us.

  4. Yeah, Charlie and AK, obviously ownership shares some blame here, but I still think it’s mostly on Z. As far as we can tell, ownership approved going after Shohei and Yamamoto for massive bucks; did they do that just because they knew they’d never have to pay because there was no way those guys were coming to SF? If they really approved that, why wouldn’t they approve spending less than those massive bucks spread out over a few key additions? SFGate has a story about how Z’s “stubborn-ness” is killing the Giants, as he just won’t move from his pre-established MO in (haha) building a good sustainable team. Starting rotation is in shambles beyond Webb and Harrison. Winn and Beck were never going to be dependable front-line starters anyway, but now that they’re getting hurt already, Z still won’t move. IMO, Z seems to think he’s way smarter than anyone else, and while I’m sure he’s a smart guy, his approach is, as I sadly must agree with the SFGate article, killing the Giants…

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I don’t think it’s Farhan. He has a proven track record. The ownership group is drawing the lines here. If they wanted to spend the money on Snell, the front office would say ‘go’ and he’d be here.

    They aren’t. And he isn’t.

  6. Charlie, you may be right, who knows. But again: ownership supposedly approved what amounted to more than 1 billion bucks for real offers to Ohtani and Yamamoto. If so, then why wouldn’t they approve even just half of that for 2 or 3 players like Snell, Montgomery, and Chapman? It doesn’t make any sense, unless they *knew* Ohtani and Yamamoto wouldn’t be coming to SF anyway. What if O had accepted the offer, would the owners have said “Ah, just kidding, we can’t pay that much”… Hell, is that what happened with Correa last year? “Oops! We didn’t think you’d accept that!” If so, then yeah, the owners are to blame. I still mostly blame Z and his stubbornness.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Because they really aren’t trying to get Ohtani. Or Stanton. Or Yamamoto. Or Judge. Or Harper. Or any number of high-priced guys.

They can’t be this inept for this long and not be by design.

The Johnsons have owned the team since 1992 and have signed ONE bona fide superstar.

Barry Bonds. And he was dying to come here.

  8. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I thought this was kind of cool, Niners have met with Luke McCaffrey WR, Brenden Rice WR and Frank Gore Jr RB. Doesn’t mean much in terms of who they will draft of course.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Saw that 12th.

That’s cool regardless of the outcome. For all the shit Jed has gotten over the years, and rightly so most of the time, that is good stuff. Eddie preached lived and died with the team and the players as one big family to the point of insanity, so some of that rubbing off on Jed is nothing but good.

Is Chubba next? lol. He’s bigger and stronger than Brock, but he’s got 2 years of eligibility left. He just transferred to Nevada. Kappy’s old stomping grounds.

    chubba

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

It would be cool to add some HOF pedigree to the roster 12th.Gore should be in still can’t believe he’s not.CMC on his way , and that Rice guy “Flash 80” Yeah best of ALL-TIME at WR if not in football laurels..

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Gore isn’t eligible till the 2026 induction. He should get in no problem.

  12. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Last I heard Gore was working for the Niners as an assistant scout or something like that. One thing is for certain is that those 3 players were taught the game well.

  13. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Whata you know the Giants won a game today.

  14. And Chapman apparently signed. Let’s see if they sign Montgomery or Snell, now that Beck is gone for perhaps the whole season. Snell, way too much money and too many years, but maybe that will change. Montgomery might be their best bet.

  15. djloo27's avatar djloo27 says:

I don’t think I could name 15 guys on our 40 man roster.
Heard Craw left in a huff..

    • Yeah, me too, Loo. As for Craw, he seemed to take it well at first, but then not so much. Kinda painful to see, really, even if many people perhaps correctly believe he’s done. Z’s comment for not even entertaining keeping Craw: he didn’t want to put any pressure on the young infielders who might be intimidated by having such a veteran presence there on the bench. One of the stupidest things Z has ever said, IMO. And he has said many.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 says:

That’s probably why they didn’t sign Bonds in 2008. They didn’t want to put pressure on Clay Timpner and Brian Horwitz…

      • Clay Timpner, lulz…

Oh, and, the Chapman contract has the classic Z opt-outs after years 1 and 2. If Chapman has a great year this year, he’s probably gone. If he sucks, we’re probably stuck with him. I thought Z had said he wasn’t going to do that anymore. In this case, it might’ve been the only way Chapman signed….

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Or was it a minute and a huff, said Groucho. Crawford is done and has to go. He’s too big to be good defender and can’t hit his weight. Hasta.

Guess JD moves around to LF, 1B and DH.

In 2021, Aaron Donald wreaks havok and the 49ers can’t block when they need a game winning drive in the NFC Title Game. In 2022 vs Philadelphia, the 49ers can’t block and Purdy gets his arm ligaments ripped; season over. In 2023, the OL can’t block, and Chris Jones blows up plays continuously. ANYONE SEE A PATTERN HERE???? Hint: no defensive player will fix this!!!

Read some Mock buzz and UGA OT Mims.
      Looking forward to his workouts.

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Seems 10 interviews with OT and IOL around our #31 and #63 picks. Starting to feel giddy. Looks like first two are to upgrade right side OL.

  18. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

    BOOM

Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler on Saturday that the Niners are promoting Nick Sorensen, the team’s defensive pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach, to the defensive coordinator role that was left open by the dismissal of Steve Wilks on Feb. 14. The team is also expected to hire former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley as assistant head coach, sources said.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

What if BA pulls a deebo and hangs on for a big contract. Lots of teams can spend big and do a draft day trade with us for a 1st plus ??.

We fix the pass pro at C to RT and have a great environment to bring up a day 1 WR in rookie year to SB.

Shanalynch does a good BA contract pre-draft or trade.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hey. DJ! Need to get me a Clay Timpner jersey . . .

Too funny. Doesn’t Z know he sounds like an idiot making that statement?

This is why I think the front office mainly bows to the checkbook. Farhan says shit like this that casual fans think ‘sure, makes sense’ while the rest of us call him out. This isn’t even about the money. It’s just a flat stupid comment.

We are the land of make-good contracts. And we are left not good.

Sorensen? Another DB coach? Proof is in the pudding, and Staley can hold his clipboards. Hey, Staley came up as an LB coach, and he certainly isn’t risk adverse.

    Just be more aggressive.

  20. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I imagine the opt-out contracts will a norm until the Giants can field a competitive team. At least we got a good player to sign.

Hopefully, Sorensen will work out otherwise it’s been a wasted exercise when there seem to be many more qualified coaches out there.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

They’ve been doing opt-outs for 6 years now except for Haniger and LaStella and now Soler.

  22. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Looks like Shanny’s gonna hire Staley.
    Meh….

  23. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Staley was with the Seahawks during the Legion of boom years which is the system the Niners are running under Shanny. I like the addition. They went in-house with Sorrenson as DC and also get a very experienced coach well versed in the system with Staley. His year as the Rams DC was the #1 ranked defense.

He didn’t do well as a HC, but the rest of his resume is strong.

  24. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

I don’t get the supposed HC assistant role the Niners call it.We all know Shanahan calls all the plays on offense, same when he had McDaniel ,who was probably frustrated and moved on to become a HC in Miami cause theirs no future with Shanny being a control freak on his staff and now Staley? Just another puppet with no input?

  25. djloo27's avatar djloo27 says:

Blake Snell to the Giants rumors are really heating up.
I don’t see it. Wants too many years.
Giants learned their lessons from Smardj, Cueto, etc…

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, these 1-2 year opt-out deals aren’t doing much for team continuity but i wouldn’t go over 4. He ain’t getting what he wants so there’s hope we don’t have to go 6.

I really wanted them to get Soto because he’s 24. Not a back-end 30+ year old guy.

  27. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Early impressions for me from Indy on GA OT Amarius Mims is he’s gonna make my list –
6’7″ / 340 and moves like a 300-pounder. Very impressed, though he tweaked a hammy in the 40, he still posted twin 5.07 times. Unreal.
    11+” hands and 36″ arms.
Can’t find any reason not to have him on the radar. Moves extremely well for the behemoth he is.
