The (Bye) Week That Was

Well, turns out not actually playing a game was a big help. We got a new pass rusher, and Seattle lost, thus pushing us back to the top of the NFC West. If we can’t get the #1 seed, might as well take the division. Some weird shit. Cincinnati, who just beat Buffalo, have beaten all 4 NFC West teams.

The NFC West teams that did play scored a grand total of 2 FGs. The SeaChicks went down hard 37-3 to Baltimore, AZ went down on the Browns and swallowed a 27-0 loss, and the Lambs laid down on Broadway (Wisconsin) to the tune of a 20-3 loss.

Last year was all about the teams that played us lost the next week. This season, win or lose, teams are revitalized after playing us. Dallas went on a 2-game winning streak after getting their ass kicked by us, and they should have won the Eagles game, but for Dak getting his toe on the wrong side of the sideline on a TD scramble, and their TE getting tackled 2″ short on the subsequent 4th down play. Wanted the Cowboys to win if only to keep us closer to the Iggles, but not to be.

The Steelers, another team we stomped to the curb, is now 5-3 and in the playoff hunt. KC, a team that desperately misses Tyreek Hill, beat Tyreek Hill and the underwhelming Dolphins. Thing is, no one looks really great at this point. We looked like the cream of the crop 3 short weeks ago. Now we are in scramble mode.

We do have Deebo back at practice. Trent Williams is still missing but should be back this week. Banks is out “multiple weeks” with a toe injury, and Javon (surprise) Kinlaw is out again. All that being said, we have to get our run game going again. Purdy has proven to be pretty good at facing blitzes, but as we saw, facing them all the time wears him down, and shit gets a little iffy late.

The JaxJags? Who the fuck knows? They are 6-2, having beaten no one of note. Well, unless the Steelers count.

What a mess this season is. I guess it is better to struggle now than later, but we need to right the Good Ship niner now.

    Haven’t seen this vid

Lucky you on seeing Etta James in a small club like that. I was just walking and passed by a club looked in and Big Mamma Thornton was just rocking away and there were only a dozen people inside, loved that show. Another time I was getting a pizza in Redwood City and Buddy Miles was playing in the back and there was hardly anyone there he played for quite awhile too. I don’t think things like that happen very often anymore.

Crazy. I saw John Lee Hooker at the Pioneer one night with no clue he was there. Saw John Fogerty playing by himself on an acoustic guitar at a Mountain Mike’s pizza joint in Palo Alto during his record company battles after Creedence and before his solo career. I was dumbfounded.

Wow! This is fantastic. IMO, Jeff Beck is the best. Period. End of Story. BTW, did any of you know that Beck was the one who taught Jimi Hendrix how to use feedback?

Believe it or not I like the Aerosmith version.

    Love me some Big Mama!!

When Willie turns 100 and Keef turns 90, they have to do a tour together.

Chase is 6’5″ 264 and the bad injury happened 2 years ago in the middle of his second season. He has recovered.

This seems like a great trade. We have our second edge. 1st pick in 2024 draft is OT. Bundle a player with our late 1st to get the best OT available.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’m thinking this is gonna be a rental, but we will see how this all works out.

Mainly because we would get a 3rd round comp pick back for losing Chase.

      In essencse a freebie.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Chase on being here. His big bro Bisa, and the vibe here.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

He sounds good. Looking at the Chargers tonight it is readily apparent what a pass rush does for a team. The Jets can’t get anything going because of the pressure.

If he gets in quick and they can meet at the QB, we should be fine down the road here.

Throwing in a little Dio there in this Jets game. Get it?

These bye weeks suck but we needed it.

  10. Winder's avatar Winder says:

This really should be a fun and competitive game. If we fall flat then we truly know the there are serious issues. Pretty sure we look for another DC next year but there maybe multiple coaching position changes needed.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I jst don’t understand what happened after the Dallas game. What flaw was detected in our scheme? We were flying to the ball and getting after short passes and teams weren’t running on us.

    Now everything gets through.

    Good article

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Nice articles, but what is so disheartening is we are losing on both sides of the line on straight plays. Our O line isn’t run blocking for shit and the base D is not getting any pressure. I think Bergs and I have a bigger point. And that’s the positioning of the linebackers. I don’t know if Wilks made a conscious effort to try to stop big plays, but everything underneath is getting through. Someone did mention to stop playing so far off the WRs on short yardage plays, but also the short zone is not working at all based on where the LBs and even Hufuanga line up. He needs to be more involved in the run defense.

They may not need to panic yet but if this next game goes like the previous 3, it WILL be panic time ANd time to make big changes in the coaching staff. If Kocurek doesn’t want to get the DC spot, he should go along with Wilks.

    Their shit ain’t working.

  14. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

All the articles and on KNBR, Welks will be on the field, fuck him and his comfort zone, gets your ass down there and become a touchy/feely kinda guy. Someone should be talking to the players right after downs, not waiting for some guy to relay it to you and by the time you are ready to call a play the offense has gone 3 and out and your D is on the field setting up plays.

Watched an NFL highlight segment on Patrick recently.
Hard to forget the amount of forced fumbles he induced and it’s leaving me wondering how few of them we’re seeing now.

  16. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

So how concerned are all of you about Trent Williams. Are ankle problems going to hinder him for the rest of the year,? Will the Niners be able to compete in the playoffs without him?

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

      Mildly concerned Irish Kevin.
I think they’re looking for the guy behind him to get some reps?

My thoughts are that they’re giving him time to get ready for the NFC opponents that matter, like Seattle.
Banks’ toe is bigger concern for me.
Turf toe is not a quick fix.

Should we be concerned, an interesting article on Chris Young

Williams did practice today. Good news.

The best part of Young coming here is that he’s here with Bosa and a (till recently) dominating defense. He isn’t being looked at as the savior or the guy to save a desperate team. Even if we sort of are. But having his ‘big brother’ in Bosa is a huge plus..

Young himself said the coaches here and the focus is much more directed to technique and attention to detail about 100% more than in Washington.

Won’t know till we get there, but this bye week definitely came at the right time, if not a week too late. Beyond that, both Cleveland and Cincy were coming off bye weeks.

And, fuck. 2 plays and we are 7-1.

Harbs suspended from UM sidelines during games for rest of season by Big 10. Will miss Penn State and Ohio State games. He can coach during the week.

This last February Eric Clapton said, “You can’t do what Jeff did, He’s number one.”

Fantastic guitar player. IMO more well rounded than some of the more popular guys like Clapton, Page, Lee, Winters, etc.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Saw Beck a few times, including the MS show for Ronnie Lane. Beck, Clapton, Page, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts all played their own sets and played together.

Saw Beck/Hammer as well. Never disappointed.

DL Jackson was put on IR. The kid hasn’t exactly lit it up so far other than for 1 game.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

He will be on IR for at least 4 weeks. Between him and Kinlaw it hasn’t really worked out even as rotational guys.

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

At this point we should just trade our 1-3 picks for players.
