Week 12 – When the Saints Come Drag-Assing In

A month ago the Niners were 3-4 and staring at the cellar and a tough divisional road game against the defending Super Bowl champion Rams. 3 games (and a new toy in CMC) and a trip to Mexico and the resurgent 49ers are 6-4 and leading the West.

Next up is the New Orleans Saints. A team that has three quarterbacks that are way short of a buck. Andy Dalton has been OK, Jameis Winston has been a disaster (and was benched), and they’ve even given Taysom Hills some throws. But their problem is their defense. 25th in points scored. Still and all, Alvin Kamara is a solid RB, Olave and Landry are solid WRs, and Jauan Johnson is a good TE.

These guys won’t be easy, but if this team can keep up with the recent effectiveness on offense and keep killing it on defense, we should be able to notch another victory. Andy Dalton is not gonna break contain and get any yards running, and they giver up a lot of sacks. But they also get a lot of sacks, so the O line is gonna have to be strong.

I liked the idea of playing CMC early and Mitchell late in Mexico, but I want to see both of them pounding the Saints. They are in the bottom third in run defense and can be worn down. I also dug the quick passes and misdirection runs. Keep that shit up and we should be fine.

Three home games in a row, so we have to keep on keeping on.

Hey, it’s good ta be da king. Freddie King.

  2. unca_chuck says:

Got to say, I’m interested to see if Jim Harbaugh can finally finish the deal. His 1-5 record vs Ohio State is the big blemish on his record.

  3. Winder says:

This game has trap written all over it. Kinda like the Chicago game did. We gotta pound em from the beginning until the end. We should beat em by 20 points and that’s what has me worried.

  4. Irish Kevin says:

Well over on the Niners Nation POD cast Rob Guerrero says that maybe Kyle is learning what to do with his offense, Rob noticed that the run game was going nowhere early in the game and Kyle switched to passing the ball. Rob thinks (and I have been saying this for years) the Niners should come out throwing the ball to setup the run. He also pointed out the Niners struggle in the Red Zone, last week against the Cards the passing TDs were over 20 yards. So there is still work to be done with this team.

  5. unca_chuck says:

The Niners didn’t even try to run in the 1st half. The Cards had 6 linemen in the box and were daring us to throw. Shanahan knew that coming in. I mean, their DC basically said, “we dare you to throw on us.” We did and they couldn’t stop it.

  6. Berger says:

Just got back from a Joe Bonamassa concert. Here was the last song before the encore.

  7. unca_chuck says:

Wish I had seen him back in the day.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Got to say I really enjoy Michael Silver writing for the Chron. Consistently good stuff. From today’s article about complacency in the face of recent success.

“That’s football,” safety Talanoa Hufanga says. “Every week, you’ve gotta prepare the same, regardless of whether it’s prime time, in a different country, or whatever. You’ve got to show up and play your game. ’Cause if you don’t, bad things will happen.”

It’s a sentiment that has been rooted in the Bay Area since the immortal line in the Grateful Dead’s “Uncle John’s Band,” courtesy of lyricist Robert Hunter: When life looks like Easy Street there is danger at your door.

    Indeed.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Irish, got to say, love the silhouetted guy in the pic of the stadium. Very cool pic.

  10. Irish Kevin says:

If Kyle calls the game like last week, should be an easy win. If he goes back to the conservative run game it will be a close game

  11. Irish Kevin says:

Missed opportunities, but so far the game is going the Niners way

  12. Irish Kevin says:

When is Kyle going to give up un the up the middle run?

  13. unca_chuck says:

    Nice by Kittle there.

  14. unca_chuck says:

Looking like sghit on offense. McGlinchjey with the hold.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Shanny didn’t seem to get these guys ready. Huge stupid penalty there.

  16. unca_chuck says:

We need to take a shot downfield.

  17. alleykat69 says:

HoldGlinchey every fucking game and now a stupid penalty on the punt team adding 15 yards wtf Womack kept running out of bounds!!

  18. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Horrible call but I’ll take it.

  19. Winder says:

Hopefully we get the mistakes done early otherwise we are in for a long day.

  20. Irish Kevin says:

I wish the RB would bounce it outside more often

  21. unca_chuck says:

Jimmy fucked that up. Mitchell would have been open.

  22. Winder says:

    well nothing has changed

  23. Irish Kevin says:

Good call just couldn’t punch it in, should have had Jimmy rollout

  24. Irish Kevin says:

Saints on the 1 with our D, Niners should end up with good field posion

  25. alleykat69 says:

Jesus Christ all these weapons and Jimmy tries to run it in and is stuffed! Twice now stopped at the goal line pathetic!!

  26. Winder says:

sure doesn’t look like last weeks Jimmy

  27. Irish Kevin says:

    Nice play Jennings

  28. unca_chuck says:

Some completely horseshit calls, but Jennings with the circus catch.

  29. Winder says:

    that was nice

  30. Irish Kevin says:

Niners D usually plays better in the 2nd half

  31. Irish Kevin says:

Better to be lucky than good?

  32. Irish Kevin says:

Good play calling, Saints playing better D than the Cards

  33. alleykat69 says:

Lucky on that grab penalty preventing a terrible pick by Jimmy G. Then Jimmy does his best Steve Spurrier floater towards the end zone as they settle yet again for a FG.. Saints do play good defense but the 49ers should be doing better..

  34. unca_chuck says:

Wow. There you go. Need a TD here to put this shit to bed.

  35. unca_chuck says:

Mason gets his shot. Mitchell can’t stay on the field. Not sure how bad the knee injury is.

  36. alleykat69 says:

Keeping that 2nd half shutout streak alive!
As Johnny Winter sings “Still Alive and Well…”

  37. unca_chuck says:

Just when we get healthy, we start losing guys.

  38. Irish Kevin says:

    Keeping the scoreless streak alive

  39. unca_chuck says:

Up to the defense again. And again.

  40. unca_chuck says:

These plays on the goal line suck both ways.

  41. Irish Kevin says:

If we score even a FG here it would put the game away

  42. unca_chuck says:

    Unreal defensive effort today.

  43. Irish Kevin says:

Saints 300+ games without a shutout, and the Niners were the last team to do it before the streak started

  44. Lurker John says:

Josh Jacobs with an 86 yard run to ice the Seahawks in OT. 233 yards on the day.

  45. Winder says:

    Our defense is amazing.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Our D is amazing, but the Saints D was also very good, held the Niners to 3 points in the second half.

  46. Berger says:

I saw a 49er fan at a Grand Sierra Resort bar last night before the concert. He said, we should beat the Saints. I told him, the Saints have a stout defense and they can rush the passer. We should win but it won’t be easy. I didn’t expect a shut out, but I didn’t expect to score many points either. This was a good win. I think we need to get Armstead and Kinlaw back to beat the Dolphins.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Kinlaw will never see the field again. AA I’m hoping he’s ready.

  48. alleykat69 says:

The 49ers have now gone 4 games covering 94 minutes and have “Not given up a single point in the 2nd Half” A BIG FAT ZERO OOOO “ DeMeco Ryan’s has this defensive unit playing out of they’re minds!!

  49. unca_chuck says:

Ryans is flying up the list of head coaching spots next season.

    • Winder says:

yeah, it’s pretty much a given that we are gonna lose him. I think he could have left this last year but decided to stick it out one more year. At least I think I read something like that. I have a feeling we are gonna sign Jimmy to another big contract. The players love him.
