Well, after going through a flock of injured running backs these past 5 years of the Shanahan era, the 49ers went and got a usually-injured running back in Christian McCaffrey. When healthy he’s been a versatile weapon, gaining a combined 2300 yards in 2019. But his last 2 seasons he’s missed 23 games.
We gave up a 2, 3, and 4 in next year’s draft, along with a 5 in the 2024 draft, so I guess we are taking a bye year for 2023 draft. We might have a couple comp picks and a 7th rounder. You know. Our wheelhouse. But whatevs. Their draft record is, like every aspect of this goddamn fucking team, wildly inconsistent.
I guess Shanahan is desperate for points, as our offensive guru, or Vanilla Ice Cream as I call him, is 18th in yards, 20th in scoring, and 23rd in 1st downs. Not a very stellar set of numbers for our resident genius. I mean, he single-handedly ruined Lance, and is now stuck with Garoppolo again. Mr. Inconsistent. And it shows. Jimmy is 2-2. The team is 3-3. The offense is stagnant. And we don’t move the ball with ANY sense of urgency when needed.
The good news about the CMC acquisition is this is likely the end of the Deebo-as RB scheme that was another injury in the making. McCaffery, when healthy is a stud. But to me this is yet another guy who will simply run up the middle, and catch 5 yard swing passes as this is all Kyle seems to trust Jimmy Gee-I-threw-another-pick-olo to throw. And he’ll likely get hurt.
To me, this move smacks of desperation. Kyle is spinning his wheels with a team that should be dominating, at least 5-1, but they can’t get out of their own way. Penalties, turnovers, and major inconsistency offensively points squarely at Shanahan and his game mismanagement.
We have lost 3 games to shitty teams. Our wins were decent enough, but the NFL these days is mediocrity in motion. Most everyone is 3-3 and any team can beat any other team. but we should NOT be this bad.
Again, this is one of those games where I think we get slaughtered. So, naturally we will win. Who the fuck knows?
And Bergs had a good point in the last thread. Getting CMC off the fake grass should do something for his short-term and long-term health.
2 of the draft picks were just the comp picks of losing both Saleah&McDaniels under the Black Lives Matters under the league’s attempt to get good black coaches in HC jobs and it’s certainly working for the Jets&Dolphins.
And the Niners could get picks back with Jimmy G and unfortunately DC Demco Ryan who will be a hot commodity with the job he’s done with the Defense #1 in football. Yeah of course it’s a risk with CMC but he’s such a dynamic football player and besides better to go all in then have the Rams end up with him. Winners fuck the prom Queen not losers! Lots of weapons to get this offense churning out big plays, CMC, Deebo,Aiyuk,Kittle,Jennings ( undervalued but a good player)Mitchell when back also adds great depth! We will see starting Sunday in a limited package for CMC red zone etc but weeks going forward should be exciting, and Lance&CMC for next year knock on wood will be even more dynamic!
You guys are more optimistic than I am. I don’t really care how we got the draft picks because now we don’t have any. I just don’t think he’s gonna pan out.
chuck- from flavs blog. the niners didn’t trade Price. I know I read yesterday that he was part of the package so I went to look and couldn’t find anything about it so I think you are right. That makes me happy.
New team new number for CMC #23…16 hours after the trade he’s already on the practice field ready to Roll against the Chiefs..
Run CMC? I think you came up with a good one here! Let’s hope it sticks, that would mean he has done well with us.
Winder, my point is I don;t think adding CMC will significantly alter anything. Until Shanny figures out how to manage a game, I’ll be more optimistic.
We are a loaded team already. Yet we are near the bottom in all offensive categories.
Will this help? Who knows? I’ll believe it when I see it.
Me too. It’s a definite cross-your-fingers deal to me. A little desperation also. We will see.
Trading for one of the best offensive players in the NFL is an act of desperation? Not seeing it. It only makes them better.
If the prospect of losing to the Chiefs again and falling to 3-4 doesn’t qualify as panic time, I don’t know what does. They just acquired one of the 5 best offensive talents in the NFL. Maybe we could be a little more optimistic until we have reason not to be.
I agree.
They’re also getting some significant pieces back, with more to come in the next couple of weeks. The Falcons game was demoralizing as hell, but if they can’t get up for this one then they really are screwed this year. They lost last week because they just didn’t execute. If they really do have SB aspirations, that has to change and right now.
McCaffrey is a weapon but Shanahan is going to have to change his evil ways and start being more aggressive, and the players have to start executing the damn plays. He’s dialing up plays and guys are getting open, they’re just not connecting. It time to start playing like the champions they believe themselves to be. This will be their toughest game this year.
There ARE a few reasons to be a little optimistic:
– Shanahan is the master at the fucking short passing game
– Deebo is pretty much done as a running back
– CMC is now playing on grass
– CMC will not be 50% of the 49ers offense
But, Kyle needs to bring back misdirection plays. he has given up on jet sweeps when he was the biggest proponent of them. Granted, teams play us tight since Jimmy Noodles can’t throw deep, but he should be able to create mismatches with ALL THIS FUCING TALENT ON OFFENSE!!
Jesu fucking Christ. We should be scoring 28 points a game but we are at 20.
I hope all you guys are right. The only thing I really like about him now is his hands and he is pretty good in the open field. But with all his injuries he hasn’t produced anything for 3 years now.
675 yards in 6 games this season isn’t bad. Esp. when everyone keys on him.
That’s true. A lot of those yards are receiving and that should help us. I guess it’s mostly the injury history that bothers me the most.
Well there are 3 scenarios, 1 Kyle calls plays like he did against the Panthers, 2 he opens up his supposedly magical play book and uses all the talent he has. And 3 sticks to the run twice, pass 1 once 3 and out. Oh and in that scenario CMC gets hurt and is out the rest of the season.
As far as injuries go u could say the same thing about Barkley’s past. But both CMC and Barkley are healthy this year and top 5 RB backs in Fantasy Football so enjoy the ride, as their both dynamic football players putting up great numbers running and catching the ball, that’s all u can ask for..
Kat- I wish I had your optimism. The only RB that I never worried about after an injury was Frank Gore.
Love me some P-Funk, Winder. Eddie Hazel is incredible. Gone too soon.
Trust me, I’ve been burned by both those guys in various fantasy leagues.
Never seen this before. I’m fucking covered in goosebumps.
that was fantastic. never saw that one either. I would have really liked to be at one of those shows.
That is Pink Floyd territory right there.
No shit. I saw George Clinton once but Eddie was long gone by then.
