Game X – The Downward Spiral

Not much to say about this one. Last year’s battle was an epic shootout the 49ers won 48-46. With our defense at close to full strength. Now? Not so much on either side of the ball.

I really don’t see a scenario where the plucky understudies come through and bring the team to victory, but I didn’t think we’d beat the Rams. This however is a different animal. Brees is having another huge year with 2100 yards, 17 TDs, and only 3 picks.

We of course have Nick Mullens. 11 yards, 5 TDs 4 picks. Good news? Brendan Aiyuk is off the COVID list and will play. As is Kendrick Bourne. Rick James had a career game last week. 9 for 183 and a TD.

So, we may get some points. I’m thinking 42- 24.

Why is Kyle still running that handoff to the WR

  2. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

3rd and 21, bet it is a run or a very short pass, nothing down the field

Good throw that is an easy TD. Fuck this team.

Shanny has pissed me off this game. The sweeps have netted -25 yards and we keep doing it.

What an absolutely terrible football team. Niners blow and that’s a beautiful thing.

  8. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Looks like we might have a pretty big turnover in players next year.

Down 2 scores moving the ball, why are we not going no huddle

  10. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Well no need for no huddle now

Well, 4-12 is looking good. I just wonder how many of the other sucky teams (Giants, Jets, Jags, Chargers, Bengals, Texans, NFC East, Vikings, Panthers, and Falcons) are gonna end up in front of us.

There’s a whole lot of suck this year. I like our shot next year, provided the entire team doesn’t end up on the IR like this year.

I was a little surprised at how well the defense played. If not for the 15 offensive mistakes and 2 blown punts we had a shot.

Yeah, we are not good enough to get away with making so many mistakes. Nice to see our Dline looking strong.

Freaking Refs, after a text league LEGAL crunching tackle by Street and Brees laying on the ground withering in pain, where the back judge didn’t throw a flag it was the side judge coming over to him and said something like: “hey it’s Drew Brees HOF Mr. New Orleans” Duh what was I thinking?the back judge was probably muttering, but it was the side judge who eventually thru the BS roughing the passer penalty flag and what really sucked in cost Street his 1st career sack!! NFL has turned into a flag football league it’s just embarrassing…

It’s just about time for open tryouts at RB now cause why expect this team not to suffer another injury there as Hasty has suffered a broken collarbone, yes the hits just keep on coming!!

  14. Winder's avatar Winder says:

yeah, we should have loaded the PS with RB’s this year. We have let some pretty good ones get away the last couple of years

The offensive line was shaky before we lost Richburg; it hasn’t really been functional in the time since.

The running game is broken. Coincidentally (not), so are all our running backs. Except McKinnon, who is a nice receiver out of the backfield at times, but not much running from scrimmage, and doesn’t pick up blitzes worth a damn.

The receivers have been a mess all year, except Aiyuk, and Deebo when he’s healthy. Losing Kittle hurt us badly in both the runa nd pass game.

Mullens is not the answer. Beathard is not the answer. Josh Johnson is not the answer.

Garoppolo will likely look a lot better with a healthy cast around him, but there is no guarantee he is the answer, either. In any event, he either renegotiates big time this Spring, or he’ll be gone for money / cap reasons alone. The cap will probably deflate this off-season. Which is big time bad news for teams close to the cap as we are. I expect some painful decisions and a lot guys departing.

Any way you slice it, we need to draft a developmental / project QB in the first 2-3 rounds at the very least. Which is tough, because we have holes at center (I’m not convinced Richburg will *ever* be back at this point), at cornerback, at safety, at linebacker, at tackle (McGlinchey run blocks fine, can’t pass block worth a damn. Maybe he should move to guard?).

Short term, our season is over. With the number of injuries we’ve had, you could not realistically expect much else. We’re not going to magically go 6-0 and make the playoffs. Even 5-1 is a joke. Most likely we’re finishing under .500. And 5-11 is not impossible now. I can accept that. We’ve had shitty luck with injuries, and it’s just not our year.

What concerns me are the long term trends. Which look troubling right now.

I’m really not sure what the team does, but I think realistically they pretty much have to give Jimmy G one more shot. The alternative is to jettison him for salary purposes and bank on a guy like Wilson or Lance or even Trask to come in as a rookie and hit the ground sprinting.

I don’t see that because as we can see, our window can be very small or even nonexistent. Yes I want us to draft a QB, but we have to try and get Jimmy G going for at least one more year. The ideal scenario of course is for our draftee QB to get a year, possibly 2 on the sidelines and some incremental play before sending him into the fire. as the starter.

We can create a ton of space getting rid of guys like McKinnon, Ford, Taylor, ‘Spoon, and a few more. Don’t think we can get away with wasting another season.

I vaguely remember this game as a kid. Although in the Bay Area they didn’t switch the game over as it was only 4:00.
