Joe Staley to Retire!

In somewhat shocking news, the Niners trade for Trent Williams of the Washington Redskins for next year’s 3rd round pick, and this year’s 5th round pick. Joe Staley, citing health concerns, has decided to retire. At least the timing was right. Williams, who held out last season with the Skins due to his feeling that the Skins medical staff misdiagnosed treatment of s growth on Williams’ head.

Williams is one of the top-rated tackles in the league, grading out as 3rd best in the league for the past 3 years, behind Joe Staley and David Bakhtiari. So we get a fresh 31 year old tackle who should be able to fit right in and pick up where Joe left off.

Joe Staley of course has been a mainstay for 13 seasons with the 49ers. He led the way for Frank Gore, protected a lot of mediocre quarterbacks, wnet through both of the recent resurgences, was a 5 time pro-bowler, 3 time all-pro and part of the All-decade team of the 2010s.

Should be a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame in 5 years.

    Sorry to see Staley go.

Trent Williams will be under contract for 2020. After that, not sure if we can work something out or not. 49ers are clearly All-in on 2020. Almost our whole draft converted mainly to three guys; all can be expected to contribute this season. If the gamble pays off Lynch and Shanhan are geniuses; if not, Bum City. You pays your money and you takes your pick.

There’s the O line guy. Colton McKivitz from West VA. Niners trade Matt Breida for the Dolphins 5th round pick.

Kind sorry to see Breida go. If he can get through the line, he’s dangerous. Guess there’s hope the McKinnon may play for us?

  3. Grumpy Guy says:

“West Virginia offensive tackle Colton McKivitz finished his college career with four years of starting experience with three coming on the right side and one at left tackle. He has the football intelligence of a four-year starter and he’s generally alert and on-schedule with his assignments. With that said, McKivitz severely lacks functional strength and his frame appears maxed out. He has troubling anchoring against power rushers and he hardly generates any push in the ground game. Perhaps he can find work in a zone blocking scheme but he has plenty of development needed. McKivitz is a low-end developmental prospect. “

Like McKittrick before him, Shanny gets a lot out of undersized linemen. Jesse Sapolu was famously an 11th round pick back in ’83.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

He’s got Coleman and Skule ahead of him as backup tackles. Unless someone can move to guard, he’s going to have a tough time making the roster.

  4. Grumpy Guy says:

    Goodwin going to Philly.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Niners trade Goodwin for pick 190. Get Lamar Jackson! Not that one. The CB from Nebraska.

  6. Grumpy Guy says:

Swapped sixths with Philly for Marquise Goodwin.

  7. Grumpy Guy says:

Moved up 20 spots for Goodwin. We also have the third pick in the 7th round. A CB, and a TE, maybe?

  8. unca_chuck says:

Lamar Jackson still out there. Pick him!.

  9. alleykat69 says:

TE Charlie Woerner Georgia is the 6th rd pick for Matt Brieda..

  10. alleykat69 says:

I would say they are way overdue now to draft a CB/Safety..

  11. Blow Staley says:

I’ve decided to quit on the team, actually. Dealing with fans like these is annoying.

  12. Winder says:

I was kinda wondering if we would take a TE since we always have. I am gonna miss Breida also he is an electrifying runner and if he gets into open spaces it’s all over.

  13. unca_chuck says:

My son has Lamar Jackson as his sleeper pick.

  14. unca_chuck says:

    Got to take a corner.

  15. Grumpy Guy says:

Jauan Jennings, WR. Big bodied slot WR. Slow (4.72) but might find a niche as role player / possession receiver.

“Big slot target with size, savvy and toughness, but lacking in functional speed and general quickness. Jennings can be clever in stemming and tilting coverage enough to open throwing windows, but getting away from press coverage is going to be difficult for him. What he can’t do may keep him from being drafted, but competitiveness at the catch point, with the ball in his hands, and as a blocker should get him into camp and give him an outside shot as a big, possession slot.”

  16. Grumpy Guy says:

Hopefully we take some DBs and interior OL as Undrafted free agents.

  17. alleykat69 says:

Guess they feel they’re strong in the secondary?
Alittle baffling but what the hell do
    I know?
I do like the size of this WR Jennings
6’3 215 lbs could be very effective in red zone if he sticks with team…

  18. unca_chuck says:

Nope. Jauan Jennings from Tenn. Certainly has the pedigree.

  19. Winder says:

Just watch how many DB’s, OL’s we get in the UDFA’s.

  20. unca_chuck says:

No kidding AK. I thought they’d get one CB in the process.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Somewhewre along the way we lost our pick at 245?

  22. alleykat69 says:

Sure would of liked for Joe Staley to have gotten a SB ring! The guy was ALL CLASS throughout his long solid career! I think he gets in the HOF …

  23. alleykat69 says:

What do you think of the picks NJ?
And Trent Williams was just a steal from the bumbling Snyder led Redskins! Replace a pro bowl LT with another one and 5 years younger! 3 instant starters, nice maneuvering by Niners!

    • NJ49er says:

Concerned about the reports of tendinitis with Kinlaw.
Loved that he made to us but…maybe that’s why?
Crossed fingers it’s not an issue.
      Staley also bothers me.
Gotta keep the faith for now.
NFCW got much tougher this weekend.
      Hope we did.

    • unca_chuck says:

He said he isn’t feeling any pain, but hey, it;’s football.

  24. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m down with the moves. I was disappointed at first what with CD and JJ being there, but I think the guy Aiyuk suits their needs nearly perfectly.

  25. unca_chuck says:

The Rams didn’t really do anything but get weaker. They have crashed and burned pretty hard. The biggest move was the fucking Texans giving DeAndre Hopkins away to the Cards.

    New thread is up.
