Playoffs a la Mode and a Cup of Tea

Must Win. Crunch Time. All In. Draw the Line. However you want to say it, we are at the brink of ecstacy here. Our playoff push started with all those easy early wins. But after all that early semi-surprising success, we are 5th seed and hit the road against whatever dogshit team comes out of the NFC East if the season ended today. We have the best record in the NFL and no bye week or home game. Such are the vagaries of the NFL.

Tell me this on 9/1/2019 and I’d be giddy. Now however, it’s a little different story. Yes, I’d be more than happy to hit the playoffs, but we are SO close to a first round bye and home-field advantage for the playoff run.

Funny thing is, because of the schedule, we control our destiny for the playoffs. Win out, and we get the NFC West crown, based on our win over NO, and Seattle’s loss to them. Lose to the Saints, and we likely hit the 5 hole. Unless we beat Seattle. Then it gets cloudy.

The tiebreaker is as follows:

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the teams).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.

If Sea goes 3-1 and we go 3-1 and lose to NO, our head-to-head record would be 1-1.

Our common opponents would be the same, both of us losing to NO and Balt and beating the rest.

Our conference games would both be 11-3.

Strength of victory? Seeing as we stomped of our weaker opponents, and Seattle didn’t, we win in a landslide.

Oh, OK. That makes me feel a little better. We have some wiggle room.

The big BUT being, just beat the Saints and all is well. Unless we lose to Seattle. then they win the tiebreaker due to their 2 wins over us, I don’t really want to leave it to the last game, but it looks like we will regardless of how shit plays out.

Poor ol’ Skeebies is jumping at shadows when I post there. His little playpen isn’t safe from the likes of Ian Anderson, Aqualung or Cross Eyed Mary.

49er Radio Analyst Tim Ryan suspended for being stupid. He made this remark about QB Lamar Jackson on a Monday radio broadcast..

That is a wonderful story. And a class act by a good human being. In today’s world that is something.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Awesome story, NJ. Very cool. I’m curious what song you wanted to play, Winder?

AK, the whole thing with Ryan is pretty dumb, but every innocuous comment must come with a pound of flesh.

  7. unca_chuck says:

Tull is one of my favorite bands. They always put on outstanding shows. Sorry I missed seeing Martin Barre in Petaluma last year.

  8. alleykat69 says:

I get it Chuck, but something about Ryan rubs me the wrong way. He’s very brash and a cocky know it all, when really he isn’t that good imo.

    • unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan, but he knows his shit. And he’s fairly straightforward. And I can’t fucking STAND Greg Papa.

Not even sure the context even matters, but looking at the game footage, it sure looked like we had a very hard time picking up the fakes. Yeah, Jackson is great, and he fakes with the best of them but observing that black unis, dark skin, and a dark football is hard to pick up during game action isn’t racist. Ignorant? Maybe. What he said wasn’t anything like what Rush Limbaugh said a few years back, or even Jimmy the Greek back in the day.

  9. rtfirefly says:

Chuck, it looked like you followed me down the rabbit hole on tiebreakers. I, too, thought that was what “strength of victory” is. No.

Strength of Victory, the tiebreak we can easily get into with Seattle at the end of the year, is the combined winning pct. of teams you’ve beaten.

Take it a step further. Not only our records, but all our results, could easily be identical with Seattle at the end of the season. Or nearly so. Except that they played and beat Philadelphia and Minnesota, while we did Washington and Green Bay. Yup. There’s the tiebreaker that could determine the #1 seed.

Seattle leads atm 13-11 to 12-12 in this tiebreaker. One more reason why the New Orleans game is super important. We win out, we avoid this tiebreaker and putting our hopes and dreams on Washington altogether.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Ahh, yeah, just looked it up. Philly is sinking though. Yeah, Beat the Saints, and we should be fine the rest of the way. Seattle is really pissing me off though. Every year I think they will sink but they don;t. They are getting stronger.

Some people in the playpen thought Clowney was a bust up there, but he is killing it for them against the run and the pass.

    • Winder says:

They are definitely our biggest thorn but at least this year we stand a fighting chance. Clowney was a one man wrecking crew in our last game with em.

    • unca_chuck says:

Getting Skule out of the LT spot and replacing him with Brunskill in the 2nd quarter helped, but a ot of damage had already been done by then.

  11. unca_chuck says:

Dallas playing like they want Garrett gone.

  12. alleykat69 says:

    Yeah the Cowboys are dogshit.
You can polish a turd 💩 but end the end it’s just a turd! Nobody in the NFC east should be allowed to go to the playoffs.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Hah! Dallas getting pounded by the Biscuit Bears.

    #1 offense
    #1 QB
    # 8 defense.

    6-7?

    Priceless!!

    Dak is throwing duks.

  14. alleykat69 says:

The cameras are not even showing Jerry tonight as he’s writing out Garrett’s pink slip!
Every Cowboys player on the sidelines is either with slumped shoulders are yelling at anyone who might listen! Garrett doesn’t look like he’s slept for a month, all red-eyed and in a comatose state..

    • unca_chuck says:

Jones won’t fire Garrett yet because Jones has stuck with him for too long already and it would make him look dumb.
Jim Harbaugh as new coach? It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Apparently Richard Sherman agrees with Tim Ryan, saying:

“It was 100% an issue,” Sherman said. “It’s the way (Ryan) presented it. That’s why it wasn’t offensive because what he was saying was a great point. It has been that way since any zone-read scheme. The mesh point is a tough point of contention. So you add a dark jersey to it and it’s going to make it even harder. But obviously you can always phrase it better.”

“Technically, it was a valid point. But you can always phrase things better and not say ‘his black skin’ but I’ve had a relationship since I got here and he’s never been anything but a great guy and a professional and a guy who takes his job seriously.”

  16. alleykat69 says:

Can’t see Jerry bringing in Harbaugh to coach his team at all.I think Harbaugh would most likely get a shot in a less pressure cooker place like Carolina though..
Jerry might just try an sway that coach from Oklahoma Riley, whose a QB guru working with Mayfield,Murray& Hurts this guy is the new hotshot on the coaching tree..
If not him Ron Rivera could be his choice, still a solid coach and will be hired after the season by some organization, why not them cowlicks…

    • rtfirefly says:

I could just picture Jim Harbaugh sitting quietly taking orders from Jerry Jones. Hahahaha NOT.

“Get out! This is the MEN’S MEETING!… Oh, say, sorry Mr. Jones, didn’t see it was you. C’mon in, sir.”

      Uh, no

  17. unca_chuck says:

Harbaugh is the splashy headline-grabbing head coach that would stand the NFL on its ear and put the Cowboys square in the spotlight. Which is job #1 for Jerry Jerk Off.

Much like when he came to us, St Jim would be walking into a badly coached team full of talent that he can work short-term miracles with.

    Right up his alley.

  18. unca_chuck says:

I never said he WON anything! Just that he would walk into a favorable situation, do well enough, and then we see what he does with this latest chance.

  19. Jerkwad Jerry says:

I’m just gonna hire Harbaugh just for the fun of watching him have my Cowboys beat the living shit out of the SnortyWhiners.
