The Morning After

In the grand scheme of things, this was a hard-fought loss. West going east, hostile environment, hostile weather, early start, hottest team . . . yeah yeah yeah. No moral victories here. We played tough till the end, and could have won. Without the mistakes we should have won. The defense was outstanding, we fought scratched and clawed till the end, and came up just a bit short. The run game had a surprising field day, with Raheem Mostert getting 146 yards on 19 carries and 2 TDs, while Jimmy G was 15-21 for 165 and a sweet TD to Deebo Samuels. A guy who is really coming on as a 1a type WR.

Thing is though, some troubling problems remain, even this late in the season. Jimmy G’s pocket awareness leaves a lot to be desired, as he fumbled away the ball deep in our own territory for an easy 7 for Baltimore, and threw a near-pick six deep in our territory as well. Yeah, the conditions were rotten, but Garoppolo has 5 lost fumbles (9 total, for minus 21 yards) and 10 interceptions, He’s solely responsible for 15 turnovers.

12 TEAMS don’t even have that many turnovers. The rest of the team has 4 fumbles, 3 of them lost.

These turnovers played a huge part in our two losses this year, and kept Pittsburgh in a game we should have romped in. In Seattle, Jimmy lost 2 fumbles and threw a pick. Yesterday of course, the fumble on our 20. Yes, teams have turnovers. Shit, we forced one from soon-to-be MVP Lamar Jackson. But that was his first lost fumble of the year. For a guy that runs so much, that’s something. Jimmy has the 5.

Seeing as we are in playoff mode right now, as in we need to win out to secure home field and the division, mistakes kill. And Jimmy G really needs to tighten his shit up.

Hate to say it, but I think we take the Saints pretty easily as well.  Our defense is much better than theirs, and I think we can shut down Brees and stop their run game.

Again, though, mistakes are the wildcard. Lose this game and we ARE the wildcard.

To go along with this, Shanahan made some dubious decisions during the game that irked me.

I was furious he ran the clock down when we started the drive to close the half. At 1:13 seconds, we had 1st and 20. Deebo makes an 8 yard catch to get to 2nd and 12. Instead of calling a timeout, Shanny lets 30 seconds run off the clock. Of course, Mostert goes 16 yards and gets to the Ravens 42. but by then we are down to 26 seconds, and we do nothing and Gould comes up 10 yards short on a 51 yard FG.

I also didn’t like the shotgun call on the 4th down play. Taking the run out of the play dictates how the defense reacts when the ball is snapped. They know it will be a pass so they get their hands up. Play action at least gives the QB a chance to get the ball past the line. As it was, the ball was tipped, turnover on downs.

We should sit Gould until he’s back to normal. He has NO range over 40 yards.

yeah, it would be nice if they could take Seattle down a notch. But fucking Wilson’s playing probably his best football ever. Anyway it would be nice to get a little breathing room. I think that loss yesterday is gonna really make us stronger. We could have won that one and the players know it. You just can’t turn the ball over to good teams and we do seem to do it quite a bit

  3. Winder says:

I gotta admit I am a Sherman fan now. I think he’s helped the team and organization immensely.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said CB Richard Sherman (knee sprain) is day to day.
Sherman appears to have escaped major injury. It’s great news for the 49ers’ top-ranked defense in both yards allowed per play as well as net yards allowed per pass attempt. The 31-year-old CB is PFF’s No. 3 overall corner among 132 qualified players this season.

One thing I want going forward is for Shanny to be more aggressive in his clock management! He gets to passive when he really needs to go for the jugular!
You would of thought he would of learned that with the Falcons and their total collapse up 28-3 in the SB and gifting Brady& Belichick another ring!

Vikes lost the fumble and their 2 best offensive weapons on one play. So much for the Vikes.

We need to win out to assure home field and a 1st round bye.

Never too early to start the Draft process IMO 😀
Tad small but, he’s productive and, returns kicks.
WR is likely to be high on Shanny’s shopping list next Spring.

Well, not so fast. Vikes have the ball and 3:30 down 4.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Fuck. 2nd and 3 you should try one run if you are going on 4th down. 2 bad passes and pfffffffffft.

  9. unca_chuck says:

    Wow. Seriously stupid Vikings.

  10. 12th man says:

And the Niners went from 1st place best in football to 5th seed wildcard just like that.
Let’s hope that lights a fire under them to win out.

  11. unca_chuck says:

The Saints game becomes huge. Lose that and we suddenly start looking at no bye week and no home games in the playoffs.

    playoffs

  12. Winder says:

Barring injuries i think we run the table the rest of the season. I don’t know how many times I have seen teams with a week off in the playoffs come out flat and get eliminated right off the bat. i know it helps to have the time off if your recuperating but if you are on a roll i don’t think it helps at all.

  13. unca_chuck says:

If we run the table we get both. The Saints and Seahawks being the ones that can take that from us. Still don’t know what happens if we end up tied with Seattle by beating them the last game of the year.

  14. unca_chuck says:

    Here are the rules:

    Two teams
    1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the teams).
    2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
    3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
    4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
    5. Strength of victory.
    6. Strength of schedule.

Assuming both Seattle and the Niners beat the Rams and AZ twice, it would come down to the Saints game. The Ravens beat us and them, and we both won all the other matching opponents. So thius Saints game is HUGE.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Just so I can see it:

    Saints remaining schedule:

    WEEK 14 · Sun 12/08 · 10:00 am
    San Francisco 49ers

    WEEK 15 · Mon 12/16 · 5:15 PM
    Indianapolis Colts

    WEEK 16 · Sun 12/22 · 10:00 am
    AT Tennessee Titans

    WEEK 17 · Sun 12/29 · 10:00 am
    AT Carolina Panthers

Carolina did us no favors in firing Riverboat Ron but it just makes it all the more imperative that we win the Saints game. They walk through Indy and Tenn.

  16. unca_chuck says:

    Seahawks schedule

    WEEK 14 · Sun 12/08 · 5:20 PM PST
    AT Los Angeles Rams

    WEEK 15 · Sun 12/15 · 10:00 AM PST
    AT Carolina Panthers

    WEEK 16 · Sun 12/22 · 1:25 PM PST
    Arizona Cardinals

    Sun 12/29 · 1:25 PM PST
    San Francisco 49ers

They look to win up until that last game. Gonna be a shit-flier.

  17. Winder says:

It looks like we have the hardest road to travel in getting homefield. That’s ok it can only make us better and raise the confidence level. And, if we can’t make it then we really don’t deserve to be there. Shit is gonna be real from now on. What fun.

  18. Grumpy Guy says:

We win our last four games, we’re in the driver’s seat. Pretty simple. But not so easy. We need to play our best football of the season over the next month.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Which leads straight to Jimmy G. He needs to stop fucking up. He has played well for the most part, but he has made dumb mistakes. 15 turnovers is unacceptable.

  20. alleykat69 says:

They dumped Chase McLaughin so Gould better get his shit together!! Also it opens up a spot which the 49ers will use on Kentavius Street, to add extra depth on the defensive line!
