Camp News

News from Santa Clara is mostly good. The defense is humming along now that we have a better pass rush, and the offense yesterday was led by Jimmy G at a 14-21 completion rate, and some nice red-zone work. The biggest surprise in camp so far is the fight for backup TE, where Ross Dwelley is moving past rookie Kaden Smith, and injured Garrett Celek. He of course was an undrafted signee, but spent the offseason in Nashville working with George Kittle and The Beater to his advantage.

Deebo Samuel is starting to show signs of life as he hauled in a deep pass between the CB and a closing safety, beat them both to the ball, and stayed on his feet for the score.

Worrisome is the play of backup center Ben Garland. He’s getting beat like a drum, and with Westie on the bricks till opening day, Garland will hopefully improve, or we may need to do something when cut-down day sends some talent into the void.

McKinnon and Verrett were nowhere to be seen,  nut K’Wuan Williams is quietly putting together a solid camp as well. He’ll be mainly a nickel back, but since we play in the NFC West with the likes of Goff, Wilson, and now Murray, I foresee a LOT of nickel. Having him playing well will be a big help.

4 days till the Dallas game!

Jerick “The Jet” McKinnon has been activated from the PUP.

  2. unca_chuck says:

    Huzzah! Hopefully he’s fully bubble-wrapped.

  3. Winder says:

For that same knee to flair up only a couple of weeks ago i don’t feel very confident with the Jet. Good thing is we got some pretty good runners who can take his snaps even Wilson is a pretty good runner as long as he holds onto the ball.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Tevin’s apparently been fumbling in practice. 3 so far. Niners sign D lineman Jay Bromley, receiver Chris Thompson. I’d like to see us bring in a center.

    • Winder says:

I was sorry to hear that Skule isn’t doing so great hopefully he gets on the PS. Yeah, I think we kind of didn’t do enough in either the draft or FA about the Oline.

  5. rtfirefly says:

    13 days till Jimmy G.!!!

  6. Berger says:

Is it football season? I’m back!

    • Berger says:

My first major concert. Aerosmith at Anaheim Stadium. Jeff Beck. Jan Hammer. Lynyrd Skynnyrd cancelled because they got in a bar fight 2 nights before. Prince got booed off stage. Starz and their one hit opened. The one hit was I Pulled the Plug.

      • unca_chuck says:

Were they any good, Bergs? Saw them in 1978 at the Oakland Coliseum, and they cleared the place out they were so terrible. By the end, the stadium was 3/4 empty, and the fans that were there were laughing at them for being so fucked up and awful.

They fucked up Train kept arollin’ terribly as their final song, dropped their dshit and walked off to a chorus of boos.

AC/CD opened, Van Halen followed, then Pat Travers, and Foreigner. They all blew the doors off Aerosmith.

      • unca_chuck says:

Starz! Saw them in a tiny club in Mt View.

      • Berger says:

Aerosmith was great. Beck was better. Your line-up was better than the one I saw. Still, Jeff beck is somebody everybody should see. He’s as good as any ever. The main reason I went was to see Skynyrd but they no showed after a fight. The thing about that show, I became a major Jeff Beck fan that day.

  7. Berger says:

Jimmy is the franchise QB but he hasn’t proven anything yet. BDN is lurking.

  8. Berger says:

I looking forward to seeing Ketavius Street!

    • 12th man says:

I think he will have to stand out in camp and pre season to make the roster. Being strong won’t cut it, this D line is stacked.

  9. Berger says:

Elijah Lee might be our best LB but he is fun too watch.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Welcome back. Guardedly optimistic on both sides of the ball .

    • Berger says:

If, and this is a big if, we stay healthy we will be as good as any team min the league. Problem is we haven’t shown the ability to stay healthy lately.

  11. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, K-Street could be a find. We seem to have a lot of depth on the D line. The O line not so much. Hoping we get a center and a guard or 2.

  12. Winder says:

It’s still way too early to tell who is gonna make the final cut. I read a Niners wire today that said James is probably gonna make it and they will cut the guy who used to play on the Eagles and KB. The same article said they think Street is the odd man out on the Dline. We gotta see some games first. i guess these guys just don’t have anything to write about.

  13. unca_chuck says:

I seriously doubt they are giving up on Street. He was a 1st round guy till he got hurt.

    • Winder says:

Yeah, I agree. I know we don’t know what he’s really like yet but maybe the brass does I don’t know. I think the fucking writers just throw shit out there because they got nothing better to do.

  14. rtfirefly says:

Bosa and Goodwin both injured with lower leg injuries. Both walked off the field under their own power, severity of injuries and length of time out unknown.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Oh boy. If we are gonna gert off to a fast start, we NEED Bosa.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Goodwin came back and practiced more so he seems to be OK> Saleh said Bosa;s injury was minor and “nothing to worry about” if you want to believe that.

  17. rtfirefly says:

Verrett hurt too. In answer to questions, Saleh said he doesn’t think Bosa’s or Verrett’s injuries are serious.

  18. Winder says:

You know it’s kinda like waiting for the axe to drop. We’ve been plagued by injuries for so long they are now just expected. That’s why rosters should be expanded by another 10 players at least, I mean who really gives a fuck it’s the owners money and since they make enough they could spread a little more out

  19. unca_chuck says:

At least 5 more. Teams should be able to carry 3 QBs.

  20. alleykat69 says:

So I have a question. What’s the deal going forward with the 2 long snappers they have? Kyle Nelson will miss the 1st 6 games due to PED suspension, so Colin Holba (sp) starts and at 25 alot cheaper to keep then Nelson at 32 money wise..You guys think Nelson will be on the chopping block once eligible to return? Don’t need 2 long snappers that’s for sure..

  21. rtfirefly says:

Ankle sprain, likely to sit out preseason as precaution.

    • rtfirefly says:

Verrett also has a minor ankle sprain. No say on his projected return, but I’m guessing it’s the same as Bosa’s – the real games.

  22. unca_chuck says:

I suppose if Holba works out they’ll just keep him.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Oh Jesus. Starters may not even see preseason games pretty soon.

    • rtfirefly says:

Bosa will be back when it counts, and Spoon has had a very good camp and might well have locked up the starting job over Verrett even without the injury.

    • rtfirefly says:

As far as Ford’s tendonitis, it’s chronic and Andy Reid sharply limited his preseason play anyway. For example, he had the same blood platelet treatment in 2016 (at least) and finished the season with 10 sacks. Nothing to see here, move along.

  24. Nicks Bosa says:

I sprained my buttcheek. Out for the season

  25. unca_chuck says:

I guess Antonio Brown got cold feet about playing the preseason games.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Word is Jimmy G will play games 2 and 3 of the preseason.

  27. rtfirefly says:

Uh oh, it’s a high ankle sprain. Early guess? Out 6+ weeks missing the beginning of the season. Kyle said Bosa will sit out the preseason “and we’ll take it from there.”

  28. rtfirefly says:

Huh? Lynch said on KNBR, and I’ll try to quote, “It’s the dreaded high ankle sprain.”

But, he also said this to Barrows (Barrows paraphrasing), “It’s not a full-blown high ankle sprain.”

You decipher that and tell me how long Bosa will be out. I’ll stick with preseason only for now.

  29. unca_chuck says:

Wonderful. Hopefully he’s semi-joking about it. I guess we’ll wait and see.

    • rtfirefly says:

I think “not a full-blown” was more referring to grades of sprain. The severest grade means many months out. The lightest, maybe 4-6 weeks?

  30. rtfirefly says:

Moore is looking like he might win the starting job at FS and be the best we’ve had at that position in some time. Ditto for Greenlaw at strong side linebacker.

  31. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Greenlaw.

  32. Winder says:

So much for our new fitness coaches we are now dropping like flies and it just practice. How discouraging.

    • rtfirefly says:

Did I forget to mention that Jet had another setback and is a real candidate now for IR? At least that would let us keep an extra WR, where the competition for the last spot is daunting.

  33. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. McKinnon is the next Lattimore.

    • rtfirefly says:

Lattimore blew up his entire knee: every ligament, nerve damage. Jet just has some swelling that he’s not used to around the repaired ACL. It’s just that he can’t go on PUP again, so if he’s out any length of time it has be IR for 8 weeks.

  34. unca_chuck says:

I get the extent of Lattimore’s injury, I just don’t think Jerick will play again. Whatever his issues are, his knee will never be able to fully recover to take an NFL pounding.

  35. unca_chuck says:

The news out of camp is that the red-zone offense is doing well.

    • rtfirefly says:

Considering all the angst about Jimmy G’s recovery, he’s looked terrific. They seem to have put a focus on the deep ball; he’s hit several different guys deep with beautiful passes. Now if our interior OLine doesn’t collapse and of course Jimmy G. stays healthy, we’ll be looking good.

  36. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m really hoping we find more depth on the interior line. Garnett is basically done. Westie is on the shelf, and the rest are underwhelming,

  37. rtfirefly says:

Kyle said yesterday that he does his player evaluations based mostly on practice NOT preseason games. LOL, really gets you excited about preseason huh?

    • Winder says:

That does make sense though since the competition level is pretty non-existent. I would just be nice to see a healthy team for once.
