Mercifully the last preseason game is here. We still have actual players that aren’t wounded, and it’s likely no starters are even gonna get one series, but this heralds the start of the 2025 season. One that can’t start fast enough as training camp has proven to be the Bataan Death March.
It also heralds the return to the mudflats of two of the bigger pariahs in recent 49er history. Trey Lance and Jim Harbaugh. Lance is drawing huge praise for his abilities in preseason. Laughable of course because he likely doesn’t see the field but for mop-up duty behind Justin Herbert, but hey, anything to garner clicks as the interwebs explode with stories of how remorseful Shanahan is over Lances success. Sure. As if Lance staying here as the backup makes up for the oodles of picks they gave up to get him.
Harbaugh? Well, as usual, he left a trail of destruction behind his recent hirings at Michigan and SF, and is adept at rallying the troops. All his programs that he took over were talented and rudderless. All improved wildly in some cases, and Michigan even won it all amid a boatload of allegation and impropiety.
Tough row for him in the stacked AFC West now. He’ll do his usual rah-rah bullshit and get close but ultimately fail and piss off everyone around him.
Us? We will only go as far as Shanahan’s hubris allows us to. If we don’t get injured first.

Berger Posits! Nick Martin is starting to get it. Little better out of Collins, still not good enough. Robby Chosen makes tough catches while being hit. Curtiss Robinson looked really good. We have some young DTs who need one more year and they’ll be really good. Most all of them are showing good flashes. Is a 49er who stays healthy really a 49er at all?

Last I saw Justin Tucker got a 10 week suspension and would be a FA at that point. No clue what he might cost but we know he’s right there with Robbie Gould in terms of reliability.
Can we survive that long with Shaky Jake is the question.

Listening to Shanahan after the game it seems like Moody is staying.
What exactly is the upside of Moody? 60+ yd kicks are commonplace now, even 70 yd has been done. Moody isn’t hitting more than those distances, so leg strength isn’t particularly amazing.
What he does do is miss PAT’s, that’s 33 yds! He also misses from what should be high percentage distances far more frequently than most kickers. Shanahan says he’s a talented kicker, that’s great, but he’s also a time bomb waiting to go off. He WILL miss important kicks, game changing kicks that turn the tide of a game or miss game winning kicks.
The main reason the team went nuts on his game winning 59 yd kick against the Raiders is because none of them thought he could do it, it was relief and then joy for the player.
Shanahan’s job is to win games, period. Last year after the first few games I wrote he had to cut the ST coach, to not make a change was malfeasance. He kept him and there is no doubt they lost games due to shitty ST play.
This is the same thing. To ride with Moody is to gamble the win/loss record. 3rd round pick or not, he is demonstrably an unreliable kicker and should be cut.

I think he make the cut, but we will be looking for a replacement right after. I don’t know if he will be replaced but I sure see it as possible. It might also come down to if his contract is guaranteed.

Soon as he loses a couple of games then we will get rid of him. A couple of games to late. I guess the kicker we brought in to challenge him in ST wasn’t very good either.
