Minor Mea Culpa

After what seemed like the worst possible offseason in the past 30 years, I have to say I’m pretty happy with how the team looks now.

The 49ers spent most of their draft capital on the defense, and more importantly got rid of Mr. Squishy Nick Sorensen. The defense looks to be vastly improved over last year’s bend/break/die defense with the return of Robert Saleh, and a crop of new young defensive linemen. The trade for Saleh’s DE Huff should also provide a spark.

Special teams got a kick in the ass with the firing of Brian Schneider and the hiring of Saleh’s guy Brant Boyer. The abject ineptitude of the special teams unit last year was painfully obvious by week 4 and it looks to be improved with a new punter, a new long snapper, and some competition for Jake from State Moody.

The big but of course ot the offensive line. Our pass protection win rate was last in the league, and Purdy was often under pressure late in games when the 49ers needed to pass. In what should be painfully obvious, blitzing and constant pressure killed most of our comeback efforts, along with some bad passes by Purdy. He isn’t blameless in this scenario, but the biggest issue facing this team last year was dropping from 3rd to 29th in points allowed. As many QBs before him have proven, it’s hard to win when you are chasing the scoreboard. ANd the points came at the hands of the defense and the poor special teams play.

I still have my issues with how this team managed to blow a lot of games last season, and I really hope that Shanahan has learned a lesson or two in how to score in the red zone. Having a healthy bunch of weapons should help, but I also hope Shanny has learned how to spell his healthy running backs before they break.

Kittle is healthy, CMC is healthy, Jannings is ready to go, Aiyuk? Well, he’s prolly gonna get pupped so he’ll miss the first 4 games, and Pearsall is nursing a hammy, but other than that, it’s full steam ahead. Everyone is signed, sealed, and delivered so the future looks good as of now. And we have a fairly soft schedule to boot.

Bring it on (in September)!

Get BA into action and see if he’s a viable trade candidate before the trade deadline. Gotta unload his contract.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, he may be a lost cause, but he’s got a rude awakening coming if he ends up in Cleveland. Or the Giants. Somewhere with a rookie/shitty QB.

He don’t realize how good he has it apparently.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

For all the good moves, why are they bothering qwith this bullshit distraction?

Like the Giants selling a portion of the team for $40 million and saying we are NOT spending this on players. We need to do upkeep around the stadium.

    Ludicroius.

Aftermath of the Shanalynch picking the ND State QB at #3 giving up two 1st’s and a 3rd. What if those were spent on OT, OT, and OC.

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yup. Not that Shanny would have spent THAT draft capital on the line as he rarely does anyway.

But yeah, Brendel spends most of the game looking behind him to see who smoked him.

I’m hoping against hope there are a couple decent overpriced guys who get released at cut-down time.

You usually get what you pay for so I would hope they spend some big$ on a tackle sometime this year. And hopefully next draft is all about the OL. Sounds like once again they are hoping some of the practice squad linemen turn their game up a notch.

Here’s to hoping Purdy is a clutch as Tyrese. Dude is on fire these playoffs.

Sorry about belaboring the OC deficiency flaws but cohnhead blares out the breakdown in our system which is OC not able to prevent the pocket collapsing on dropback pass plays.

Great, the D with a weak schedule will have us drafting ib back quarter of each round. Forget OT then and get the best OC in RD 1.

I’ve seen Tommy a couple of times. I’ve got 2 0r 3 Cds. I got to talk to him after a show. He played at a small venue in Carson City. I was fresh out of the hospital and couldn’t go. I hope he comes back. The owner of the place thinks he will.

Nice. He was a fixture in the club scene in SF for a good 30 years.

Cant count the number of times I saw him.

I’m actually excited and it’s hard to believe after downright suckage for years is the new look SF Jets Special Teams unit coming in under both Brant Boyer (who’s been a ST guys for years&Saleh knowing his talent keeping him on his new staff after his hire, and even the Jets under Ulbrich kept him on.

Luckily Shanahan buried his head in the sand and didn’t meddle with ST for once and let Boyer&Saleh bring in good coverage guys to add into some Rooks their develop, I’m hopeful for a top 10 ST unit this season..

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

If nothing else this unit could not be as bad as the last couple of years. Hopefully last year humbled Shanny to also make better decisions in the run game.

Crazy! Amazing what is out there floating around. Still geeked about the shows I saw at Winterland out there from 1975 and on on youtube.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, every once in awhile searching you run into some pretty good stuff. Ju.se goes to show you are never too old to see something new even if it’s old

The early Small Faces is great. As is Booker-T and the MGs.

Buddy of mine down in Capitola lives by a rule than when he sees a line, he’ll jump in it. He did that one day in Santa Cruz, and it turned out to be Neil Young playing with Booker T and the MGs. This was like in the 90s. Said it was crazy good.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah Booker T rocked in that. They used to play green onions so much that I got sick of it.

  15. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Heard some rumblings about Ricky Pearsall might need to step up his game with his nagging injuries missing all of OTA’s and could be extended longer out.Meanwhile their draft pick WR Jordan Watkins ( could be a steal from the draft)has looked real good so far,so the heat could be on for him to step it up.

It’s crazy still to me that Jennings is the only sure lock starter with Aiyuk out,and then it’s Pearsall,Watkins ( 2 years younger then Pearsall) Robinson ( good bet to be suspended 4 games) Naylor I like his size just green, forget if theirs anyone else?

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I was baffled by that pick then and I’m still baffled by the pick now.

Dude HAS to be on the field to open the season.
