AA Bye Bye

Well, no room for sentimentality. Arik Armstead declined a salary restructure, so the 49ers unceremoniously released him today. Color me fine with this. He’s been a solid enough guy, but never really lived up to the high expectations as a 1st round pick (at 17), has had injury issues, and hey, in the old Bill Walsh philosophy. better to get rid of him now than pay all that $28 mill next season.

Strange though that he wouldn’t take a cut to remain with the team that stuck with him through a lot of injury-plagued seasons in 2022 and 2023, missing 17 games. But here we go. Get DJ Jones back at half the price.

Free agency is right around the corner so I’d think we’ll do something about this.

AA was a valuable guy, when he was out of the lineup (too frequently) the line play suffered pass and run, but all things considered, too many lost injury games and cost per season, this one makes sense to me. He’s great when he’s on the field, but that’s the problem for the dollars paid.

Won’t be easy to replace him though.

He’s breaking down 12th, can’t say I’m surprised that they asked him to restructure.
He’s carrying a hefty chunk of Cap coin and it makes sense to me that they looked for some room to move in FA.
Money talks and it’s a business after all.
I see DE/DT/OT/CB as the top targets between FA and Draft.
WR will depend on who we lose.

    How about this headline,

Javon Hargrave tops SI’s list of worst free-agent signings for 2023

Sad to see him go he was a solid Niner for a long time. Looks like he missed the 10 year wall by a year. My guess is Seattle or the fucking Rams get him.

Hargrave wasn’t terrible. He wasn’t what we thought we were getting though.

Then again, the defense as a unit played below their abilities under Wilks.

AA Was unsung for a good portion of his career. I’m a little shocked he didn’t decide to stick around.

With Pete out in Seattle, I don’t think they pick up AA!
