Week 5 Litmus Test

Lots of hype around this game, and hey, any time Dallas and the 49ers meet, there’s tons and tons of history. We of course have stopped their last 2 playoff excursions in 2021 and 2022. Now? It’s the 4-0 Niners vs the 3-1 Cowboys. You can say Dallas hasn’t beaten anybody tough, but then again neither have we. Pittsburgh was supposed to be an early challenge, but we dispatched them with ease, despite their vaunted defense. Which is 29th in yards allowed. The Rams? Well, they are 2-2. Kind of a Jekyll/Hyde team. They looked real good vs. Seattle but cratered vs. 1-3 Bengals, and looked decent in the loss to the Niners, and blew a 23 point lead only to beat the Colts. The Giants? Please. Still don’;’t know how they came back v the Cards. They should be 2-2 as well.

Dallas has beaten the 1-3 jets, the 1-3 Giants, and the 1-3 Patriots. The bit of a shocker was Dallas lost to AZ. AZ played us pretty well with their sustained drives, and they killed Dallas’ defense with three plays of over 44 yards, so you know we have some good footage of how AZ beat ’em. Dallas out-gained AZ 416-400 but AZ had a whopping 222 yards on the ground. Led by Sarah Connor’s 98 yards, and Dobbs 55. And all AZ did was stop Dallas in the red zone. Of Dallas’ 5 trips to the red zone, they got one TD, 3 FGs, and the ubiquitous red zone pick by Dak. Dallas has struggled in the red zone all season.

So, the blueprint is pretty much set. Run, play-action, keep them out of the end zone. I really wish Elijah Mitchell would be ready for this game as we need to pound the ball down their throats. CMC should be able to run over this defense, but having Mitchell behind him to add to the pounding would be excellent. I do dig Jordan Mason’s game as well. Mix it up with the three, and run 2-back offenses, and put CMC in motion. Get real creative with him. Having CMC on a linebacker is like taking candy from a baby. If they play us heavy run, simply go play-action and beat them over the middle.

I think we can wear down this defense and put points up. The defense plays big in this win. 1 pick and a fumble recovery. 34-14 Niners.

chuck that is true there is big history between us and this year is no different. I just love it when we take it to em. I get to watch this one and I won’t be leaving the room no matter what. I will be loud though. It’s games like this that make the current NFL still special.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, this one is gonna be another wild one. Like I said I think we got ’em. Again.

RIP Dick Butkus. One of the legends of the game. A true giant of the NFL. Enough cannot be said about him as he transcended the game and helped make the game become bigger than life.

On a night the Bears come to life and win their first game.

He was probably the toughest player of my lifetime IMO. The bears of the 60’s rarely won very much but no one wanted to play them mostly because of Butkus.

Yeah, the Bears couldn’t find a quarterback to save their lives but Butkus and Gale Sayers were drafted 3 and 4 in the 1st round in 1965. The Niners picked Ken Willard with the 2nd pick. Namath went 12th (to the Cardinals).

The 1st round of that draft has some players. Including JT Snow’s dad.

The Niners draft in ’65 was a world of shit! 20 rounds and they got Willard.

    Randy Gregory traded to 9ers along with a 7th for a 6th

Dick Butkus was a “SAVAGE “ on the football field always with blood dripping down his nose I loved that! So many great LB’s back in the days I remember Tommy Nobis (sp) being a solid player with Falcons as well. That was some draft for the Bears picking 2 HOF players with Sayers&Butkus! RIP Dick Butkus you were the man that set the high bar at the LB position..

Cowgirls I believe will stack the box on CMC and force Purdy to beat them thru the air.I’m still find with that since Purdy hasn’t thrown a pick this year!Still should be a great matchup with 2 good teams going at it..30-21 NIners lets Goooo!Lets Roll!!!!

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

If they try to do that, we will kill them in the air. Quick passes over the middle to the vacated LB spots.

Just scored 2 tickets to the Niner game Sunday night!!

    $250 each.

Like the get of Gregory if only for depth.

  9. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I figure both Dallas and Denver got rid of him for a reason. We will find out soon enough if he’s dogging it. I bet Denver had to eat a lot of that 70 million also.
Congrats on snagging those tickets it should be a ball.

Yeah, kinda weird as Hyder isn’t bad. Yeah, the Niners are paying league minimum.

  11. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I had a ticket in the VIP section for this game. My boss had the other ticket. Our company called him to Hawaii this Sunday. I could’ve had the tickets for 1,000 each. I declined.

  12. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Butkus was the gold standard for NFL toughness.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    That sucks, Bergs.

Tommy Nobis, Ray Nitschke, and Dick Butkus. Three great football names and three great linebackers for the ages.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, the games were slower then mostly because the players didn’t take as much care of themselves as they do now. But I still think the players of the 50’s – 70’s were far tougher than they are now.

They sure got away with a hell of a lot more than now. But if the 50s rules applied now, guys would be getting killed out there.

  16. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

My take is Dan Quinn sends heat on the A-gaps, which typically blew up our timing.
Curious to see if he continues to go that way.

Hoping Shanny has an answer by now.
Quick tempo, play on the edges perhaps?
Have to think the answer is to run at Parsons and negate the pressure he brings.

Hate to say it but, I don’t think this is going to be a walk in the park.
Not seeing it as a trap game by any stretch, however, we didn’t put much heat on Dobbs and, Dak has the same ability to be elusive and keep plays alive.
Pollard and Lamb have to be contained at the very least.

    9ers win a tight one.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, quick passes are a major part of our strategy, and I’m sure Dallas will come out loading the box to stop the run. I think we’ll be attacking the middle of the field behind the LBs if they bring them up to pack the box.
