Home Opener – Do You Know the Way to San(ta) Jose(Clara)?

Last time we played Pittsburgh at home was the infamous ‘lights-out’ game that Irish Kevin (I think) went to. Here’s his pic of the Stick with no lights. We won that game by harassing an immobile Big Ben, and squeaking out enough offense. I see our side doing a lot more offensively this weekend.

Like I said earlier, this is a game that Teflon Mike Nolan and Aluminum Mike Singletary would puke on their shoes. A statement game that they would screw the pooch and lose whatever momentum they had built up.

So here we are with Kyle Shanahan. I guess his biggest difference is he isn’t a Mike. So he’s got that going for him. His dad was Mike though, so we need to be wary. Seriously though, this is the first major test of Shanahan and his team. Their first game this season was won by the defense. Their second was more on the offense.

Sure, the have been too many penalties and mistakes (Nick, please don’t line up offsides anymore. Look at Dee Ford for an example of what harm that can do), but the offense was clicking all game and the red zone issues were erased. For the time being.

Thing is, Pittsburgh is desperate. They are 0-2 and just lost Big Ben for the year. They can call this season a wash, but it also gives them a sense of reckless abandon. Mason Rudolph is a big dude at 6’5″ and 240. He looked pretty good in the little I saw of his highlights, but the Steelers need to see if they can back him going forward. I’d think they are going to move him around a lot, try to use him as a runner/passer, and throw a lot of TE slants, scrapes, and underneath things. He has a huge arm though, so you never know, . Our defense has to stay home on his movements and not let him break contain and get around the edges. And, as usual, pressure is the key. Get him off his marks and confuse him.

They will try to run, but they’ve had little success against Sea and NE running.

Defensively, Pittsburgh has been roasted. Tom Terrifuck scorched them for 341 and 3 TDs. RW? 300 and 3 TDs, and an astounding 82% completion rate. Due to this, Pittsburgh went out and got premier safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from Miami for Pittsburgh’s 1st round pick next year. This would be a statement game for Jimmy Garoppolo to at least throw another high 200 game, get a couple TDs, and get through a game with no picks. He doesn’t need to set the sky ablaze with an aerial assault, as long as we can get our run game going behind Brieda and Mostert.

Pittsburgh is an east coast team doing the travel thing, and we are just starting to feel our oats. If we can get on top of them quickly, I think we can take them without too too much problem. It is all about the mistakes. Our margin for error is slim, and we can’t give shit away like the TB game. That being said, the fact that we fucked up all over the place and still won means something. We used to drop those games.

33-20 Niners.

Lights Out, SF.

I saw this tour 4th row, sitting in front of Michael Shenker. They opened for Rush at the Santa Monica civic.

  1. Winder says:

If we didn’t lose our LT I think we could handle em for 60 minutes fairly easy without big Ben. If Jimmy gets happy feet and starts launching interceptions things just might not be so easy. Also if he gets hammered and doesn’t have time to set we become one dimensional and that’s when we start getting injured. Anyway, I am just a worry wart and should have faith in our play calling but i am still suspect about everything so far.

  2. unca_chuck says:

If we can run, all will be fine.

    • Beer Belly Billy says:

If you didn’t chug Tecates while eating carnitas tacos all day you wouldn’t have the runs and your neighborhood wouldn’t be a hazard zone.

  3. Jack Dorsey says:

Too bad your team lost control of their own stadium the way Chuck lost control of his beer gut. Damn, dude is becoming a real life Homer Simpson. SAD! Twitter Stadium?? LOL

  4. alleykat69 says:

The Niners are “Too Hot to Handle” for the Steelers!
Because the Steelers have hit “Rock Bottom”
They will be looking for a “Doctor Doctor”please oh the pain I’m in…
As the 49ers turn the “Lights Out” in London/Santa Clara on the Hapless Steelers by the tune of 38-13!!

  5. Winder says:

Looks like Jeds got some splanin to do. I’m glad Santa Clara is trying to get what’s owed to them.

  6. Jimmuh Gee says:

My number one receiver this week will be Minkah Fitzpatrick. Besides my boyfriend, that is…

  7. Irish Kevin says:

That was an awesome night. The Niners will beat the Steelers this Sunday book it

  8. unca_chuck says:

Seeing Michael Schenker with UFO is one of the highlights of the shows I’ve seen. He killed it. Also saw his MSG at the Keystone palo alto. Seeing Belew with Talking Heads was also special. Speaking of Belew, I just saw him at Bob Weir’s Sweetwater music hall in Mill Valley.

  9. rob says:

So far so good guys !

  10. unca_chuck says:

Hey ROB!!! Glad we got Kwon from your Buccos!

  11. Grumpy Guy says:

    Rob!!! Howdy!!!

  12. Winder says:

    Sup Rob

  14. alleykat69 says:

    What a LOSER!!
AB is either going to try and set a record for most teams to play for in one season, are more likely he should be on suicide watch!!!

  15. alleykat69 says:

What a fantastic band UFO is, legendary stuff, I was just amazed how good they were in concert and their albums were a must buy!!
Heard their playing Oct19 ( of course sold out) at the Great American Music Hall? SF in the tenderloin district.
Never been to this place, have you Chuck,Winder,Rtfly,Berger? Bet it sounds great inside, just like the Old Waldorf where I saw Pat Travers and other great acts..Damm UFO&Pat Travers sure would be a tasty combo to see together.., Hell let’s throwin Robin Trower as well..

    • Winder says:

Kat- Been a long time but it was one of the most comfortable venues to watch bands play. Unless they have remolded. Last time I was there i saw Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee and it was just great.

      • alleykat69 says:

Thanks Winder…Yeah I want to check that place out sometimes.I like the smaller venue atmospheres at times.Old Waldorf was great, 2 drink minimum, great seats.I got to see Pat Travers,Rory Gallagher,AÇ/DC there, all awesome shows..And Slims,Boz Scaggs joint I believe? Todd Rundgren (sp)&Scaggs&Elvin Bishop…I appreciate the fact that some bands will not hesitate playing at smaller clubs🙌🎶🎵🎤🎸🎷🎼🎹

  16. rtfirefly says:

34-24 Niners. We run continue to use OZ and play action as well as a TE on Skule’s side to ward off their pass rush.

  17. 12th man says:

    Opening day finally!
Really hoping to see this game well supported today. Remember if you’re watching on TV, Levi has a ton of indoor areas that fans go to in the lower levels so empty seats there is not a good measure of attendance.
Expecting a statement game today 31-14 Niners.

  18. Irish Kevin says:

    Niners 34-21 Steelers

  19. unca_chuck says:

    At the game. 3-0 baby!!

  20. Winder says:

    Well that sucks

  21. alleykat69 says:

Jesus can they start out any worse!!
Jimmy throws behind Brieda causing a pick, now Mosert simple toss play drops it and they lose 18 on his fumble fingers..

  22. Grumpy Guy says:

Sloppy Butter fingers start on offense. Lucky and good on defense to only be down by 6. Still plenty of time to settle down and turn it around.

  23. Winder says:

This really sucks, can’t turn it over so many times and win

  24. alleykat69 says:

This is fuckin Bullshit!!! This is like Burt Reynolds in Longest Yard, throwin the game till the end..
Why don’t they just have the defense play both ways?

  25. alleykat69 says:

Why do they have to be so cute around the goal line with more motion in their pants, then just making smart heads up plays?

  26. Grumpy Guy says:

One measure of a really good team is when you can win a game that you know you probably really should not have – when you overcome playing a shitty game and get the “W” anyway.

Big game for us. 3-0 at the Bye? I’ll take it.

  27. rtfirefly says:

    Fuuuuck that was close

  28. Winder says:

That was a hard one to watch. i haven’t left the room that many times for awhile. But, 3-0 is sweet.

  29. Irish Kevin says:

Last 5 years the Niners would have been 0-3. The D kept them in the game

  30. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. There;s winning ugly and then there’s that. I’ll tell you one thing, don’t know if it was apparent on TV, but the defense was hitting hard all day, Ford and Alexander were flying all over the place. Verrett had his 2 plays and was roasted. Witherspoon get carted of, but was back on the sidelines so I don;t know that the deal is with him. I guess the break is coming at a good time.

Exum at least wasn’t crispified out there,

    • Whiners D Line says:

Only solid consistent factor in your otherwise pornhub infested team. Besides the beer cum Uncut_Dick creams all day today

  31. Irish Kevin says:

The last 5 years the Niners would have been 0-3, the D kept them in the game

  32. Grumpy Guy says:

Witherspoon had a foot thing. We probably won’t know more until tomorrow or Tuesday. Hopefully we are Verrett-Free again in two weeks.

I knew the team would be better on defense with the pass rush upgrade but it’s even better than I expected.

We won’t have butter fingers every week like today. Some days shit just happens. But its nice to know we can fight through it and got a win anyway.

Everyone remembers the Catch. Only the diehards remember we turned the ball over six times that day, or else Dwight Clark would have never need to make the Catch; we would have won by 20.

Winning Ugly as Shit beats the Hell out of Losing Pretty.

  33. NJ49er says:

Hoping Jed has made peace with the Ohlone elders somehow.
Try as they might during the 1st half, the evil spirits never drifted far enough into the 9er psyche to turn the tide. Good to get the W.

I’d still arrange for head dress/sweat lodge night before the season gets into a funk though, if I were him.
Take a Shaman to the game promo?
Free tickets to the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe?

They fought to rename the Mission Santa Clara Native American neophyte burial site in their own language. They have named it the “Clareño Muwékma Ya Túnnešte Nómmo [Where the Clareño Indians are Buried] Site.
Jed might want to think about getting that plaque into the stadium somehow. 😀

    • NJ49er says:

Google ‘shaman headdress’….Some pretty cool stuff out there.
This could be the next wave of fan gear for 9er home games?
Ward (hint)(Jimmy) (hint) off evil spirits perhaps?

      • NJ49er says:

Turn our remaining home games into stadium event of Indian Rituals?
An ocean of Shaman Headdress to thwart the opposition.
Viking fans already have a good amount of ‘horns’ in their stands. We need to do it one better.
        Skulls, antlers, horns and what-not?
Being ever so careful not to mimic the Goth-like attire from across the Bay, of course.

    • Vegas Gets a Better Stadium says:

What the actual fuck are you talking about? Meanwhile, the York Dorks get that pigsty in Santa Clara for life. Da RayDuhs are about to move into a state of the art facility, Sin City or not. It’ll be the gem of the Southwest while Facebook Field will be a forgotten wasteland where NFL careers go to die.

      • NJ49er says:

Look it up – Burial grounds/Santa Clara/Ohlone Indians.
Then, use a little levity, with a touch of York irony, and some recent Yorkian history.
Mix with equal parts F-Troop and true native Ohlone Indian culture and, maybe you’ll find a little amusement.

      • NJ49er says:

We may not only be cursed by the York’s incompetence, there could be some lingering concerns (curses) related to the disturbance of ancient burial grounds at work.
Jed should simply embrace the possibility, and perhaps, make a peace offering.

      • unca_chuck says:

So? The Raiders will be playing on front of empty seats in 2 years if they look like this current team.

  34. unca_chuck says:

Pettis made the play of the game coming back for that TD pass. If he waits, that ball is picked.

  35. 12th man says:

Chuck, you were at the game?

  36. NJ49er says:

We’ve got a BYE coming. Could they be in a position to juggle the roster?
Jalen Ramsey played for Saleh along the way.
It’s the price tag involved however.
If they could manage to unload a Contract, and recoup the 2nd they gave up for Dee, it might work?

  37. unca_chuck says:

They want two 1s last I heard.
