There’s a Flag on the Play . . .

Well, that was ugly. The Niners win, but boy, it’s raining flags. The good news is our 2nd string offense and defense played pretty well against Dallas’ 1st string o and d in the 1st half. We kept Dallas out of the end zone, and even got some pressure on their QBs.

Mullens and The Beater looked decent, with a couple hiccups. Jalen Hurt had a very nice game, with 2 red zone TDs. Bourne looked rusty with a couple drops, the run game was not really there, but then again, we were down to our 3rd stringer there with the mirage (McKinnon) not playing, and Brieda and Coleman out as well. Deebo had a play or 2, and Dwelley had a nice gain over the middle on 3rd down.

D was decent. We held their Elliott-less run game in check, and did a good job on Dak and keeping him corralled and out of the end zone.

Whether this is the new NFL or not, the Niners decided to not play 90% of their 1st stringers in this game and won’t play them in the last preseason games. That didn’t stop the injury bug from hitting the team as swing tackle Shon Coleman was lost for the year, and a nagging foot problem for Trent Taylor turned out to be a broken foot.

Frankly I like the idea of leaving the starters out for  weeks 1 and 4 of the preseason as the injury rate is skyrocketing in today’s NFL. And, I sure don’t get how that game was called by the refs. They neglected to review a questionable PI call that was supposed to be automatically reviewed, and some of those holding calls were dubious at best.

Hochuli, like his dad, craves that air time.

  1. NFL Refs says:

Our sole job this season is to screw the Niners over. I don’t know how but Chuck, in his infinite football wisdom, figured it out.

  2. Winder says:

Dallas and Seattle have always seemed to get preferential treatment when it comes to calls. Maybe i am just prejudiced against those teams but it sure seems they get away when it comes to calls

  3. unca_chuck says:

Seattle did get robbed in Super Bowl 40. Make up shit for that? Dallas nearly always catches breaks. ‘Cept for that one, of course!

    • Winder says:

I think NE get a lot of calls go their way also. All 3 owners were influential. From what I have read Seattle’s owner did a lot for the NFL. The one that recently passed away Paul Allen.

      • NJ49er says:

Maybe Jed needs a “Team Bus” to entertain the Blandino Boys?
        Apparently worked well for Jerruh,

      • NJ49er says:

But…who would take Jed seriously in party venue circles?
He impresses me as a hot chocolate and bunny slippers type 😀

  4. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Jed seems to have very little gravitas among the other owners, Christ, he still looks like a little kid, but he’s one up on Mark Davis!

    • Jed Dork says:

All of the other new stadiums are complete shit holes compared to the gem of a heatstroke-inducing field we built on a former sewage treatment plant in the middle of nowhere.

When you live in moms basement you don’t get out much 12th..

  6. unca_chuck says:

Heh heh. From what I’m gathering out of camp, Tevin Coleman has problems holding on to the football. Other notes are Jalen Hurd is impressive after his solid game last Saturday.

  7. rtfirefly says:

5 straight INTs for Jimmy G. in practice today. 2 of those wouldn’t have been INTs in real games; they would have been sacks by Solomon Thomas after beating Skule.

Hoo boy! Can we take a mulligan on today?

  8. unca_chuck says:

All about the pressure. Doesn’t say much for our O line though,

    • NJ49er says:

      It’s not rocket science…
      Protect the QB
      Sack the QB
      Pretty simple.

    • Big Dick Nick says:

      It’s very simple.
      Protect my big cock.
Get Jimmy G’s pornhub girlfriend in the sack.
      Fake an injury.
CJ Beatsoffhard is the new starter.

      • rtfirefly says:

That is a candidate for the stupidest post I have ever read on the Internet, and I’ve read plenty of doozies.

You know that speaks of you personally, don’t you? I don’t know anyone else in this world who enjoys embarrassing themselves in public the way you do.

  9. rtfirefly says:

Tell you one thing. The Niners might have found a gem in 2018 3rd round free safety Tarvarius Moore. Saleh has him playing corner last year for some reason. I hope maybe it helped his FS instincts. In any case, he’s back as FS and has been tearing it up in preseason so far.

Now that Jimmie Ward is back, he might be back to 2nd string. Hopefully, Jimmie is only a placeholder until the inevitable injury.

The Niners look miles better in the back 7 than they did (imagine Verrett and a rejuvenated Witherspoon duking it out for 2nd corner!).

If the OLine falls apart, they’ll have to rely on that defense. I still don’t trust it, but compared to last year, it is unquestionably better.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Moore played corner because everybody was hurt. This is make-or-break for Saleh. But with some health and some consistency I think this defense really ratchets up the pressure.

I mean, it can’t get worse. 2 picks? 7 turnovers? Those numbers are hideous. Teams did more in one game than we did all year.

And yeah, the O line is still a big worry. We have to keep Jimmy G healthy and protected.

  11. alleykat69 says:

Damm rookie hazing can get quite expensive !
Deebo Samuel had to pickup the tab for 10 players ( I’m assuming all vets as they ordered 64 items, not sure if drinks were on separate tab lol 😂)to the tune of 3,733,58 and that’s before tip! The Restaurant Shanahan’s yes that Mike Shanahan , Kyle’s dad’s fancy pad in Denver..

  12. rtfirefly says:

Niner defense dominated joint practice with the Broncs today even without Bosa and Ford. Moore with a pick 6. Niner offense looked good at first, then bad, Jimmy G. with a pick 6.

Person left the locker room on a cart. With Richburg still out, we may be down 2 starters on the OL come opening day. We’ve lost our swing tackle Coleman for the season, and G Garnett is recuperating for that pinky toe surgery. Oy vey

  13. unca_chuck says:

Shit. Protection is very important. We need to get more bodies into camp. Can’t be losing guys. Shit.

    • Winder says:

Seems like we lose someone every practice. I doubt we will have any G’s on our practice squad the way things are going

  14. rtfirefly says:

On the good news front, we released Greg Mabin today. If you don’t recall who Greg Mabin is, think back to those thrilling days of yesteryear when we had a lead against the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay in the 4th quarter and CJ Beathard was outdueling Aaron Rodgers.

Then, Aaron Rodgers threw 5 straight passes directed over and around one particular CB, resulting in the winning touchdown. Yep, that CB. That’s the fella.

  15. rtfirefly says:

Now, the early word on Person is that he wrapped his foot too tight today. Dafuq? Anyway, it might be good news, too early to tell.

  16. rtfirefly says:

7 sacks by the Broncs today without Von Miller on the field. Niners won the “game”, Broncs D won the day. Injury rundown by Lynch actually doesn’t look too bad for Game 1.

    • Winder says:

That’s what happens when your OL sucks. They gotta do something otherwise Jimmy G’s gonna get hammered. I don’t think he can take a whole lotta hits before something happens.

      • rtfirefly says:

I never would have believed it after the last couple years, Winder, but the early returns are leading me to the astounding idea that our defense is going to carry the day this year while our high-powered offense struggles with a rotten interior OLine.

It’s so early, though. It may turn out that our D stinks against the run and our OZ run game negates a lot of that interior pressure. Kyles loves play action.

        Soooo early

  17. rtfirefly says:

What fascinates me this offseason are our WRs. That’s usually my favorite position on which to speculate, but this year is different.

Goodwin – one of the fastest players in the NFL, he had a disappointed injury hampered season last year and he missed time when his wife miscarried on twins after miscarrying on one baby the year before.
    LOCK

Taylor – 5th rd., 2017. Taylor had by all accounts the best training camp of all our WRs. He was Jimmy G.’s go-to guy. Disappointing sophomore season after a broken neck/broken back (?) injury.
    LOCK

Richie James – 7th rd., 2017. My darkhorse candidate this year to make the team, it may hinge on Taylor’s injury (out 4-6 more weeks estimated) and his ability on returns on ST. Has shown flashes in camp on deep balls from Jimmie G.
    ???

Dante Pettis – 2nd rd., 2018. All the promise of the world. Shanny’s been pushing him hard in camp. I think Shanny believes that only 1000 yds. this year would be a disappointing season.
    LOCK

Deebo Samuels – 2nd round., 2019. Good camp, looks promising on contested catches and in the red zone.
    LOCK

Jalen Hurd – 3rd round. ,2019. Another good camp. Another physical receiver like Deebo. Can potentially play any position including TE and, what he played at first in college, RB.
    LOCK

Kendrick Boune/Jordan Matthews – we’re getting into territory I don’t know much about. I was convinced that Matthews was just camp fodder. He only plays the slot, Taylor/James territory. However, I don’t remember reading that he ever dropped a pass in camp. Nothing spectacular. Today, Matthews had 1 catch for a FD. Today, Matthews had 1 catch for a TD in RZ drills. And so on. Bourne? I really don’t know enough to comment. I think he’s made some key catches in camp as well.
    ????/????

LOCKS – Goodwin, Taylor, Pettis, Samuels, Hurd
?????? – Not a lot of spots left on the roster. They might be able to twiddle for a couple weeks while Taylor rehabs, and (doubtful) we might be able to sneak James onto the PS.
    Bourne, Matthew, James
    ———————————
No stars there, unless Pettis or Deebo can fill the role. But far more talent across the board than we’ve had at WR in a very long time.

  18. Winder says:

I think our WR’s are gonna be the spotlight of this offense. None of them should be underestimated by any defense.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Bourne had 2 drops iirc in the Dallas game. He’s on the edge. I think Hurd is the wildcard. I think he has a breakout season.

  20. unca_chuck says:

The line is desperately important. Westie has to be much better,

  21. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Jimmy G looks like shit.

  22. unca_chuck says:

    1-6 for 0 yards.

  23. Uncca-Chuckk says:

Another Niners game, another three hours of me talking to myself here

  24. alleykat69 says:

Mostert’s having a hell of a game, breaking tackles are just out running the Defense on the 30 yard TD!

  25. Winder says:

yeah, looks like we play pretty good against the scrubs.

  26. Winder says:

i didn’t get to see the first half but it sounds like our offense could not be found

  27. Winder says:

    That is fucking discouraging

  28. unca_chuck says:

    Nice play by Deebo there.

  29. Winder says:

    Any word on T moore?

  30. unca_chuck says:

Staley got cooked repeatedly. The O line was terrible.

  31. Winder says:

That just might be a problem all year

  32. alleykat69 says:

4 sacks by the backups is encouraging though..
Yeah sweet run by Deebo, they clocked his top speed at 21 mph that’s Tyreek Hill territory..

  33. Winder says:

I think our defense will be fine

  34. Berger says:

People are focused on Jimmy G but I am more concerned about how our O line got abused in pass protection. No QB could succeed with that kind of protection. Especially Staley, he looked terrible.

    • unca_chuck says:

People? Garoppolo looked rusty and shitty. He looked like a guy with 10 NFL starts.

Yeah, the blocking was bad. But he should not have thrown the near pick 6. He should know better than that. The pick was bad enough. THEN he throws that near pick 6?

Throw in his 5 pick performance a few days ago and ‘people’ worry. As they should. It’s not like Garoppolo has a long track record to look back on. He needs to start making better decisions.

  35. unca_chuck says:

Didn’t think we’d miss Person this much. But at least he should be ready. Same with Westie. I’m real worried about our O ine.

  36. Winder says:

Mullens got creamed pretty good himself looked to be a bout a 2 second drop and they were all over him

  37. Berger says:

I hinted at this last year and am feeling a little stronger about it this year. Our best QB might be Mullens. I have a feeling I am not alone on this thought. I do have confidence in Jimmy but he better not get hurt, he might nor get his job back.
