Free Agents -and- What To Do About the O Line?

I mentioned this in the previous thread, and I think it holds true, that the team who gives up sacks a lot more than it creates them, will look to bolster a shakey line through free agency rather than the draft.

We have very little draft capital, and I think we need to upgrade too many other areas to use a pick on an offensive lineman. Well, maybe one. But nothing higher than a 4th rounder.

Our tackles are set in ageless Joe Staley, and Mike McGlinchey. The rest is up for grabs. Westie Richberg (Richie Westberg?) is coming off a sub-par year that he attributed for being dinged up. As of now, Person and Tomlinson are our right and left guards with Magnusen and Garnett being the backups.

So, if there was work to be done there, it would be at guard. Our guards are OK, but they leave a bit to be desired pass protection-wise. We gave up 48 sacks. Not the horrendous number of 62 given up by Houston, but we were 9th worst in sack totals, and 4th in yards lost.

One guy we are apparently interested in draft-wise is Garrett Bradbury. He had played both guard and center well in college, and could very well slip into Tomlinson’s spot. He’d be a 3rd rounder if the yokels are right. He ran a 4.9 40 and possesses the later quickness desired by our outside zone blocking scheme.

As far as who will be available after the draft? Who knows? Your guess is as good as mine.

Gonna say Bradbury lands with LAR late RD1 if not sooner.
There will be solid options in RD4 and beyond.
Interior guys are less glamorous and typically interchangeable.
    See what comes…

  2. Winder says:

We need to find another Newberry(sp). I think if I was running the draft I would go Edge, WR, OT/G, ILB, DB, in that order. I think we have 6 picks so I would take a flyer on a QB.

  3. Garrett Bradbury says:

The 49ers’ O-line is nothing but five tomato cans inviting any D-linemen to stomp Jimmy Pornoppollo into oblivion. I hope to God I don’t have to join that train wreck.

  4. Winder says:

Low level sighing but since we were talking OL

    Daniel Brunskill signs with 49ers

Jesus. The NFL. Tough on, well, kneeling.

    Beat up some chick, ehhh.

Report: Reuben Foster not expected to be suspended by NFL

  6. rtfirefly says:

We’ll draft an OL in the lower rounds. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we used our 2nd rounder on one. NJ will have to tell me if there are any in this year’s draft worthy of it.

I expect, however, a WR in the 2nd. It’s a good year for WRs. Can Pettis stay healthy? I think he’s Antonio Brown in progress, with the separation he gets. Will Goodwin be healthy? He’s the only guy we’ve got who can take the top of the defense. Whether Jimmy G. can consistently hit the deep ball is a whole ‘nother issue. Another quick receiver and Goodwin, Pettis, new guy could be potential dynamite teamed up with Kittle. That’s with Jimmy G. at QB lol, not Mullen or Trump fanatic CJ LoseOften.

2nd rounder on WR (frontrunner by far) or FS or CB I expect. OT or OG would be interesting.

Gonna be a long, long 13 days till the Bosa Express pulls into the station.

    • NJ49er says:

Here’s where I’m leaning RTF – No reason to think we won’t address the OL somewhere along the way. Thinking someone like Opeta or Bates will be there later. Not so much for Bradbury and McCoy who likely go RD1.

      OL
      Garrett Bradbury (C) – NC St – 6’2″/306 – 1.74 Split – 34 Reps (7.41 3-Cone)
      Erik McCoy (C) – TX A&M – 6’3″/303 1.72 Split – 29 Reps (8.28 3-Cone)
      Sua Opeta (C) – Weber St – 6’4″/301 1.66 Split – 39 Reps (8.06 3-Cone)
      Chris Lindstrom (G/C) – BC – 6’3″/308 1.70 Split – 25 Reps (7.61 3-Cone)
      Ryan Bates (OG)- PSU – 6’4″/306 1.70 Split – 28 Reps (7.45 3-Cone)
      Shaq Calhoun (OG) – MSSt – 6’2″/310 – 1.72 Split – 26 Reps (7.46 3-Cone)
      Trey Pipkins (OT/OG)- Sioux Falls – 6’6″/309 – 1.75 Split – 16 Reps (7.61 3-Cone)

  12. NJ49er says:

Russell gets paid – Hopefully handcuffs the budget in Seattle too –

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports Wilson will receive $107 million guaranteed and his contract contains a no-trade clause.

Russell Wilson: “Hey Seattle, we got a deal”

  13. unca_chuck says:

$107 mill guaranteed? Wow. That REALLY looks to hamper their moves going forward but I have no idea of their cap space and such.

Makes the Jimmy G deal look like peanuts.

    • 12th man says:

From what I read so far the real guaranteed money is $65m which is a huge jump over Rogers $49m
I just don’t see Wilson as worthy of that size contract.

  14. unca_chuck says:

The price tag for Patrick Mahomes just went through the stratosphere.

    • Winder says:

yeah, if Mahomes can avoid the sophmore slump he is gonna be pure gold. A lot is gonna depend on KC’s running game without Hunt. Wilson has been carrying Seattle for the last few years and that’s why he got paid.

  15. Russell Wilson says:

I’m jealous of your 5 championship rings

    3. When the dialog box opens click OK to clear the cache. …
    4. Click OK again to close the Internet Options box.

Actually I don’t have a PC Chuck, I just use my cellphone on yours and BF’s site.
BF’s site is worse right now, I don’t know if these stupid pop up ads affect my phone? I try the log in all the time, wordpress, username,& password i see the plus face feature I need but when I switch back to Flavors and your site it goes away and I can’t get on, freakin frustrating!!

    • Winder says:

That schedule isn’t bad. Maybe we can stay back east after the Buc’s game. Two probable shitty weather games in Balt and Seattle. And, a fourth week bye is the earliest I can remember for us. Usually by the time we get our week off we are scrounging the scrap heap of players. i think we go 8-8.

      • rtfirefly says:

2002 last time for Week 4 bye, Winder.

Sept. 8 hurricane season for TB. Miserably hot and humid in any case.

      • Winder says:

RT- maybe we get lucky and get a cool sea breeze. But I have been to Tampa in August and it was just terrible sticky, I think I lived in a couple of local dives for a few days IIRC.

  27. rtfirefly says:

The Bucs have a 7 week stretch without a home game, from Sept. 22-Nov. 10. Their sole “home” game in that stretch is in London.

    LOL

  28. rtfirefly says:

The Raiders go from Sept. 15-Nov. 3.

    LOL

    • unca_chuck says:

Yeah, and they have a ‘home’ game in London as well.

Just be thankful that my Louisiana mafia connections were able to give you a mystery power outage so you could attempt a miracle comeback in the Super Bowl vs. Baltimore and then choke it away at the five yard line.

    • Prediction Pete says:

My prediction is you’ll go 0-16 and Jimmy the G-Strap will do nothing but pornhub stints.

  29. Winder says:

The Niners have been lucky the last couple of years not going to the UK. They are playing more games over there so our # is bound to be called pretty soon. We are also up for that fucking espn TV show that follows the team around for a year. That is a total distraction and they shouldn’t even do it.

  30. unca_chuck says:

If we have a decent season i think we go next year.
