Niners Make Some Noise

Well, excuse me for not being thrilled about the Kwon Alexander signing, but I am totally down with the Dee Ford signing. The dude put up nice numbers last year. 13 sacks, 13 tackles for a loss among the 55 tackles last season. He’s young at 27 and he is the proud owner of a huge 5 year, $87 million contract. And we only lose next year’s 2nd round pick. Nice. Got to give Lynch kudos for this deal. It addresses a huge need.

We need pass rush help, and Ford is the real deal. If Kwon can come back from his knee injury, and Kentavius Street can, and we draft Williams/Bosa, we will have fixed a lot of defensive issues we have had. I would still like to see us get safety Earl Thomas as the big money players (Honey Badger, Collins, Weddell) are off the board and we still need secondary help across the board. Depth is fine, but we need guys that can actually hold on to interceptions.

Damn, the Browns are going after Earl Thomas hard now. The Brownies if anything are going balls to the wall.

Word is ODBJ may hold out for more $$$. This one could still blow up in their face.

  2. unca_chuck says:

The fricking NFL Network and ESPN are blowing their collective loads over this ODB deal. I think it’s a pretty big overpay for the guy, and it really wasn’t a desperate need for them.

They are burying the Steelers and praising the Browns. Yeah, the Browns are winning the preseason but that doesn’t mean squadoosh till they play the games,

    • NJ49er says:

Happy we didn’t get sucked into the OBJ process. He’s a talent and all but, a major diva.
He’s also carrying a hefty price tag, which is likely the reason the NYG put him out there.
They realized too late that paying him wasn’t going to fix him.
Now that the Browns dealt Peppers, Earl makes sense if they’re willing to throw the right numbers his way.

  3. The Cleveland Browns says:

But we’re still a million times better than the Whiners.

  4. alleykat69 says:

Le’Veon Bell signs with the Jets 4/52 million.
Not the brightest move, since Pitt offered more last July on a deal..
Fast a furious on signings&trades right now, pretty exciting stuff!

    • NJ49er says:

Guaranteeing Bell $35Mil is quite the risk IMO. I simply don’t trust his desire to play anymore. Especially with this tweet –
I’m back in the green baby, let’s get it
      We’ll see……

  5. NJ49er says:

The Kwon deal just simply looks way overboard to me. Can’t get my head around that decision no matter how I look at it.
Dee Ford for a future 2 is fine, if Lynch is willing to gamble with the 2nd slot in an effort to recoup it.
And no, I’m not a Bosa fan.
Quinnen or Allen make more sense to me, especially now that Ford has been obtained.
There’s enough depth at DE to wait around if Lynch can sell.
NYG have the extra Picks now to secure Haskins if they want him at 2.
I’d wait until 6 if extra Picks are offered.

  6. unca_chuck says:

I’m right there with ’em. Williams killed the combine, and Bosa was unimpressive. QW seems to be the best athlete between he and Bosa, but Bosa is a more natural fit for the Niners. I still don’t know who I prefer. I’m beginning to lean back toward QWilliams.

As far as Alexander goes, I don’t get it either. I don’t think we were bidding against anyone so the reason the price was so high is baffling. Ain’t my money though. If he comes through, it’ll be just another transaction.

    • NJ49er says:

I just don’t see where all the Bosa hype is coming from, never did. At least not by comparison to many others in this Class. Simple numbers stuff –

      Nick Bosa DE 6-4, 266 4.79
      Quinnen Williams DT 6-3, 303 4.83
      Josh Allen OLB 6-5, 262 4.63
      Rashan Gary DE 6-5, 277 4.58
      Montez Sweat OLB 6-6, 260 4.41
      Clelin Ferrell DE 6-5, 263 4.70

And this guy from Eastern MI could probably be a late RD steal from a sheer numbers comparison to the big school guys –

      Maxx Crosby – EMU – 6’4″/255 – 4.66/1.60 Split – 36″ Vert (162 Tkls – 20 Sacks)

      • NJ49er says:

Sweat slams Bosa in most Combine stats too, including the coveted ‘reach’ ability.
Longest arms go to Omenihu and Sweat.
Omenihu would be available well outside the area the rest of these guys are going to go too.
Bosa doesn’t seem overly powerful, or fast enough, for me.
Factor in the short arms and I simply pass on him that high.
I think NFL OTs will eat him alive.

      • NJ49er says:

Omenihu blew the 40 (4.92 )at the Combine and, will likely fall way down the Board as a result.
I’ve omitted him (for now) on my list because there are so many better options to chose from.
I’ll come back to him if he retakes the 40 at his Pro Day.
Point being, there’s way too much to chose from in this Class. As advertised and then some.
I WANT NT Dexter Lawrence too.
He is my PRIMO Fat Man in the Middle this year. 😀
        Dexter Lawrence – Clemson – 6’4″/342 – 5.05/1.74 – 36 Reps (131 Tkls/10 Sacks)

      • Berger says:

The hype on Bosa is watching the video. You can add numbers all day long but the video is the #1 source to find out how good a player is.

      • NJ49er says:

        Count me out Berger
        I can’t buy it 😀

  7. Winder says:

My only real issue with Bosa is his durability and I don’t like that he quit his team to prepare for the draft. I am kinda leaning toward what NJ has been saying, if possible trade out for a top 10 pick and add one or two more down the road. We still need a whole bunch of pieces and if we can still get a good edge out of it then so be it.

    • Winder says:

Dee Ford is a pretty good edge rusher in his own way. He does give the Niners plenty of room for options. It might be crazy but if we trade out it might be for more OL help. For some reason I love it when we get offensive help with early picks. I wouldn’t be unhappy if we took the best OT/OG and WR we could get. and get one of the edge rushers in the 3rd.

    • unca_chuck says:

All this dismantling of the Giants has me wondering if they are going to go all-in on a QB. At 2 we would be prime trade partners. Dropping to 6 would still give us a shot at Sweat/Josh Allen, but Bosa/QW will be more than likely gone.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Then again, the Giants can simply tank this last season with Eli and net Justin Herbert next draft. Hwy, Bullit finally posed something useful. Some Dee Ford highlights.

Like I predicted yesterday, Ol’ Dirty Beckham wants to restructure his deal with the Browns and get more money. John Dorsey is over the barrel and will knuckle to ODB’s demands. I mean, a contract squabble with the new guy? Doubtful.

  9. alleykat69 says:

    Wow great sign!
49ers sign RB Tevin Coleman for 2years 10 mil
    McKinnon,Brieda,Coleman a nice stable of RB’s in Shanny’s offense!

    • Winder says:

Wow. That is a major upgrade and both the RB coach and KS know him well.

      • Winder says:

I hope they don’t let McKinnon go unless he just isn’t healing. With both McKinnon and Brieda getting hurt last year we will probably keep em all.

  10. Irish Kevin says:

On KNBR Brent Jones want the Niners to get Odel,. He justified that with the Niners don’t have a receiver that scares defenses. That is one reason why teams load the box against the run. With the picking up of running backs it scares me that they will become the Rams offense, can run but no passing game. That would suck.

  11. NJ49er says:

Berger another number I consider – Games played.

    QWilliams – 24
    MSweat – 27
    NBosa – 29
    RGary – 34
    JAllen – 42
    CFerrell – 44
    JFerguson – 50

    • NJ49er says:

Sometimes it’s injury related. But for Quinnen, (at ‘Bama), it’s more about the depth chart and guys ahead of him.
Ferguson is another guy that got a week with Shanny & Co in Mobile. He was disinvited to Indy for a past legal issue so, his numbers aren’t available to me at this point.
However, he was durable and, racked up 45 Sacks, albeit against a lesser level of competition.
I would factor his potential, when considering whether to deal out of slot 2, in favor of additional Picks, if it were to present itself.
Plenty of ways to go, which makes the process fun 😀

      • NJ49er says:

Sacks / Reps for the same group –

        QWilliams – 10 / DNP
        MSweat – 23.5 / 21
        NBosa – 17.5 / 29
        RGary – 9.5 / 26
        JAllen – 31.5 / 28
        CFerrell – 27 / 25
        JFerguson – 45 / INC

    • Berger says:

I was very disappointed in the way Q Williams faded in the 2nd half of the title game. There was one play where the RB ran by him and he didn’t even try to make the tackle. He’s good but I’d rather have AA.

I don’t buy that Bosa gave up on his team. He wasn’t cleared to play by the doctors until middle to late December. Why play in a meaningless bowl game if the risk is re aggravating a core muscle injury. He did the right thing.

Josh Allen is a premier speed rusher but that is all he does. He’ll be a non factor in the run game. Bosa will not only get to the QB, he’ll stuff the run. He will be in for more plays because of this. Montez Sweat would be my #2. It will be a year or two before he is physical enough to handle the run game but will get to the QB now.

    • Berger says:

The other thing is Q Williams is not an edge rusher, he is an interior lineman. I’m sure he could play DE but he is not an edge rusher. The strength of our team is in interior D-line. We need edge rushers.

You give me Bosa and Ford on the edges with Buckner inside and AA pushing the front of the pocket and that is as good as it currently gets in the NFL. AA’s push in front of the QB will get those other’s their sacks when the QB has nowhere to escape.

  12. unca_chuck says:

Well, one thing we are not getting is enough of a push up the middle, either. With no outside pressure, we got nothing. I’ll take either one at this point. If AZ takes Bosa, we take QW. IF AZ takes Murray, we take Bosa.

I don’t think we can afford to pass on either.

    • rtfirefly says:

If Bosa is gone, we have the #2 overall with Murray and Haskins in play. The Gints look like they’re gonna #TankforTua, which sucks as it rules out #6. Still, I’d trade down for an Allen clone for SAM/Edge. We’ve got DTs out the wazoo. We have 1 DE.

  13. rtfirefly says:

The over/under for the Brownies is 8.5 wins. That’s a gimme, Dennis.

  14. rtfirefly says:

Now we got Verrett to bookend with Sherman. If he’s truly healthy, Hot Damn! What an offseason!

  15. Winder says:

We just signed another fucking injured player CB Jason Verrett. This is getting pretty ridiculous unless they plan on stashing them on the IR. Other wise they will just take up space that could be used by a player that can actually play.

  16. NJ49er says:

Gotta put the new state of the art training staff in the spotlight perhaps?
Buy broken players, pay them crazy money (that no one else was even considering), and then, if they don’t get on the field, they take heat off the trainers by saying their previous injuries were the cause.
All the King’s horses, and all the King’s men, couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
    Playoffs….

    • unca_chuck says:

Not sure why that would even be a thing, NJ. Pretzel logic or something.

Guys come back from knee injuries all the time. I ain’t really down with this, but they are taking a shot on this guy for a reason. He’s fast as shit when healthy and covers a lot of ground. And this team needs speed in the defense.

  17. Winder says:

Looks like we got Jorden Matthews WR also he’s 6’3″ 215 so he just might have a place here.

  18. alleykat69 says:

Jordan Matthews added as WR depth.
Like his size 6’3 215, last 2 years non productive though.Maybe he finds it in SF under Shanny.
I would of preferred they went after Tyrell Williams instead, who the Raiders locked up..
