What to Make of That Denver Game

Is this a repeat of last year’s end-of-year resurgence? A rise to fame for our backup QB, BDN? A mirage? The ghost of Charlie Krueger taking a collective shit on NoFear and company? I prefer the last one, but I digress.

This game pretty much encapsulates what I thought the team was at the start of the year. Stout run defense, a bit leaky in the pass coverage, decent enough in the pass rush. This surely hasn’t come to pass this season. And despite the optimism, this season hit the skids with the year-ending knee injury to Jimmy Garoppolo. But at least offensively, they are showing SOME improvement over the last regime. And this is with the 3rd string QB and RB manning the skill positions. Garcon is a joke, Goodwin is a conundrum, Pettis is rounding into shape, but George Kittle has proven himself to be an absolute draft steal. He’s over 1,000 yards, he has stopped dropping passes, and he has show to be a bonafide weapon in our passing attack.

We aren’t burning up the world with this offense, but again, 3rd string QB and RB, fair to middling ground game, and the red zone struggles continue. But there is reason to be optimistic if this team can get healthy.

Defensively, this game looks like what I thought we would be when the season started. Thomas getting decent pressure. Buckner in the mix most plays. Armstead stuffing the line. Linebackers making plays. That it comes this late in the season is galling, but at this point, I don’t know what to think. The braintrust started mostly rookies and young guys last week, and they performed admirably. The coverage was solid, and the pressure was enough to disrupt Keenum. Yeah, Keenum. I know. But we did grind Lindsey into the ground without any damage. He of course has been tearing up the league recently. He has run for 340 yards his past 3 games. and we held him to 30, so there’s that.

I guess the proof is in the pudding this weekend. Seattle? Well, they are fully in the playoffs as of now,  and look to keep killing us. Their defense looked very good last night, but the Bears are not the greatest of offenses. And they are on a short week.

Chicago kept RW in check until that 40 yard run, but Seattle shut down Trubisky and their run game all night. As we saw last night, RW can be pressured into shit throws himself. His pick was terrible, and their protection is iffy at best. Pressure is ESSENTIAL to us going anywhere, and BDN will be under attack, so this looks to be another low-scoring affair. One thing I do like about BDN over the Beater is his quick release. We did a lot of quick passes and even a couple slants.

Young and fast seemed to work against Denver. While Denver is not as bad as the Raiders, Seattle is a whole other deal. We will see. All we really have to do is stop with the penalties and the turnovers. Get a pick or 2. We caused 3 fumbles last weekend, but didn’t recover any of them. Of course we also put the ball on the ground 4 times. No turnovers, but shit, Goodwin himself had 2 fumbles.  Got to stop that shit.

We’re hosting the Seahawks this weekend.

Oh yeah. Ooops. Chicago, Seattle. Shit. I was thinking Chicago from the game last night.

    Changed it. Thanks.

  3. Winder says:

One thing I really like about this years Niners is that some of our players may not be all that great but none of them give up. They play a full fucking game and that makes me think things will work themselves out. Since our defense is struggling I just wish Shanny would open it up a little more. I think our players would have more success that way. But, WTFDIK.

And we now get the College fill in schedule starting this weekend with 2 Saturday games.
Just to complicate things even further for you Chuck 😀
Suddenly, the Cleveland/Denver Prime-timer, on Saturday night, actually looks interesting.

    Gotta love this deal –
Detroit at Buffalo 3,360 tickets as low as $4 New Era Field, Buffalo

    Bring a flask….. Wear warm clothes 😀

  6. Winder says:

NJ- Until 1982 you could get into any 49er game for $5 bucks. Those were the days.

The Rams just lost one of their home games next season; it will be one of the four London games. Visiting teams have not been announced afaik.

    • rtfirefly says:

I heard it wrong; the Rams could host in Mexico City, and are actually probably likely to because of the cancellation of this year’s visit.

We’re 2-0 in London, last trip in 2013.

    • rtfirefly says:

With Jimmy G.’s looks, a London visit could make life there verrry interesting for a few days.

I agree with Winder, Kyle needs to open up the offense. 0 points in the second half is not going to cut it against a good team. It is not like he is going to lose his job if he loses the rest of the games. As far as I am concerned he should be trying every play in his playbook.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Kyle worries me when he gets a lead. He gets predictable and conservative. Like he’s still overreacting to blowing that Super Bowl lead.

We need better pass protection to really crack the playbook open. Beyond that, we are on our 3rd stringer, so whatever we get out of him is gravy.

Although I think now that BDN has passed CJ on the depth chart.

    • rtfirefly says:

      I hope so:
      CJ 1-10
      BDN 2-2

    • Irish Kevin says:

Why better pass protection, this season is done, open it up and take chances, why wait till JG gets back, you can evaluate plays to see if it will be a success or a complete fail
