Now THAT Was God Awful

What do you call this? Playing to the level of your opponent? Figuring out new and exciting ways to blow games? Hike it through the goal posts for 2? The curse of Super Bowl LI? Or, as Bill Walsh said, playing just well enough to lose?

For whatever its worth, Kyle Shanahan cannot close games to save his life. Our only win was saved by a ticky tack holding call nowhere near the play that negated an interception that would have been a first and 10 from the Niner 15 in the closing minutes of the Detroit game.

The 49ers have blown 4th quarter leads like I blow through a 12 pack on game day.  The Super Bowl failure has been well-documented, and put to rest, but blowing a one point lead against the Clippers isn’t horrific, esp on the road. Blowing a 7 point lead, twice, to the Packers is tough, esp because we out-played them for the most part but couldn’t finish. Couldn’t finish/.

Blowing a 12 point lead to the fucking Cardinals? In front of a crowd that sounded like 1/2 49er fans? Pathetic. Injuries be damned, when you have a team down 12 in the 4th quarter you have to be able to shut the door. You hold a team to 3 points for 3 quarters and give up 15 in the 4th? Fuck that in spades.

Saaleh should be fired on the spot. This is obviously not just his problem, but once again, we let 5-6 screens go for 15 yards a pop. 3rd and 12? No prob. Screen to Johnson for 18 yards. I’ve never seen a defense that systematically leaves so many people unaccounted for over and over. rosen wasn’t all that good, but he got the job done when he needed to.

CJ the Beater? Hell to the no. He seems to think that he has all day to throw and he can peruse the WRs in their routes for 5-6 seconds. He doesn’t. He takes WAY too many sacks. The idiot announcers did at least point out on numerous occasions that Beater was not just firing the ball out when he had a couple guys open. He was waiting for someone to get more open? Shit I don’t know.

Bu the bottom line here is, I’ve got some questions about how these guy finish. I mean, we get the Stupor Bowl to look forward to this Thursday as we travel to the wilds of Oakland for our last visit to the Mausoleum. Frankly, I have no hope for our defense. The Raiders suck as bad as us and can find a bunch of ways to  lose themselves, but they can score points once in a while.

Without Garoppolo, we are shit on a shingle. And maybe we are winning these games with a better QB. Butt the holes in our defensive scheme are big enough to drive 8 more losses through.

And….Hue Jackson bites the dust in Cleveland.
Saleh joining the exodus anytime soon?

  2. NJ49er says:

Chuck the fun part of TNF is it happens in Jeds’ crib.
National coverage of an empty stadium?
Hope it’s an embarrassing fiasco for him.

  3. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Cleve was showing a little improvement. Saleh has to go.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Ahhh, thought is was in Oakland.

  5. Irish Kevin says:

So what is wrong with Foster and the other end? The guy that was playing so well before Reuben came back from his suspension. I thought the analyst on them was they were going to reek havoc on QB’s.

    • Winder says:

Both of them seem out of position more often than not. At the start of the year we were seeing lots of missed tackles and we are still seeing quite a few but now it seems to me like we are playing confused. Someone has to step up.

    • unca_chuck says:

That’s Saleh’s job. To get them in the right places. I don’t know why there is the seemingly huge fall off in tackling, because we were much better last year. And I don;t remember guys being this wide open ALL the time.

Maybe they need to take the defensive signals away from Warner. I just don’t know. I thought this defense would be MUCH better. Instead, we are regressing a shit-ton.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Saleh doesn’t have him rushing the QB. There are a whole lot of questions around how we use Thomas, Armstead, and Buckner. All appear to be fairly solid linemen, but they aren’t doing well in Saleh’s system.

  7. unca_chuck says:

At this point, I’d go 3-4 mainly to get faster guys rushing the QB. Get Coyle and Marsh out there with Forster and Warner. The way we are doing things now isn’t working.

Funny thing is, as bad as our turnover ratio is, and our defense in general, we have 2 defensive TDs. One on a fumble and one on an INT. Did those help in any wins? Nope.

  8. Winder says:

I don’t know whats wrong with our Dline but we got a lot of high picks and they can’t be all duds. Of course I remember McGrew and Balmer(sp) so maybe they are. Saleh’s defense is structured like Seattle’s but we don’t have anywhere near the players they had and still have it seems. Time to be creative or get someone else that can run a competent D.

    • NJ49er says:

And….with all those #1 Draft Picks in Cleveland, Hue won 3 games.
      Hmmmm?
When Coaching sucks talent follows suit.
I’m in no hurry to mess up a much needed Draft slot but, at least show some progress.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Right. This season is pretty much a wasteland what with Garoppolo gone, but he wouldn’t help this defense much. Other than putting points on the board. And yeah that helps. But look at the games we lost with Jimmy G. All high-scoring affairs. We can’t live on shootouts. Not for a couple years anyway.

  10. DieHardNinerFaithfulSince2011 says:

Of course we can live on shootouts, but only if we can get Dez Bryant to be our number one receiver. We could score 50+ points a game and I like our chances with that and if we could get Todd Haley to be our DC and Hue Jackson to be our HEAD COACH we will be dominant! While we’re at it, let’s make Mike Holmgren our new GM and Santa Clara football will be relevant again!

  11. unca_chuck says:

I’m so glad you decide to waste your brain typing this drivel here.

  12. rtfirefly says:

I wanted Hue Jackson instead of Chip Kelly. I’m happy we lucked out and wound up with Shanny. It appears obvious from a clip from “Hard Knocks” this summer that Hue and Todd Haley together were toxic. One of them should’ve been gone after the exchange I saw. I guess Hue taking play calling duties from Haley in midseason lit the fuse to the powder keg.

The last 6 (!!) Browns head coaches were fired immediately after the second Steeler game of the season. A Cleveland Tradition!

  13. unca_chuck says:

The factory of sadness churns on. I thought they were foolish not to get Barkley AND a QB but they hitched their wagon to Mayfield for good or bad.

  14. Winder says:

I gotta admit Shanny is losing a little bit of his luster in my eyes. It is not so much our record this year(I understand about injuries) but it’s the way we are playing the games. Defenses are just teeing off on us and I don’t see much of any adjustments. Hopefully it is just a blip in the larger picture of things.

    • rtfirefly says:

A new HC would be 5 since the end of Dec. 2014. Although it’d be funny thinking of Jed paying all of them.

  15. Winder says:

Lol, I was kinda hoping we would take a flyer on this guy. You never know.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Wow. How to end your career before it starts. Not like Eli is keeping anyone off the field. He should be sitting, but they have no one behind him. Even less so now.

  17. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, it’s hard to know just what the fuck is going on with this team. PLaying ust under thelevel of just about everyone shows the parity in the NFL. All of these GD games we were in, minus the Ram game. Drops, penalties, and turnovers kill, and we’ve done all of those in spades.

Problem is, some of that is coaching, some is preparedness, some is smarts, some is luck, or lack of luck, and a lot is scheme. Which is coaching. Especially on defense.

Despite the crap going on, I think we are better offensively than defensively. We have players on both sides of the ball, but the o is decimated with injuries. The Beater isn’t improving, so I think we need another mid-round QB. No idea yet who, but . . .

  18. unca_chuck says:

I didn’t think we addressed the line enough even with Richberg anf McGlinchey. Garnett has proven to be a non-starter, and the rest are fair to middling. We are getting beat by 4 man rushes, and blitzes are simply too much for us to handle. I think our offensive woes stem from a lack of talent.

  19. DieHardNinerFaithfulSince2011 says:

Franchise QB? Let’s get Case Keenum here right now and we’ll be on the fast track for a Super Bowl trophy! Sunnyvale’s beloved 49ers will be bringing home a championship in no time!

  20. rtfirefly says:

Sunnyvale this time? Man you flunked every geography class you ever took, didn’t you? #Need TutorPlease

  21. rtfirefly says:

CJ couldn’t practice today because he can’t hold the ball because of his injured wrist. We play in 49 1/2 hours. We’ll also be starting a 3rd string SS.

    • Winder says:

Yeah but we play the Raiders. Maybe Mullens or Savage can throw a ball. Part of my family have flown in from Hawaii they are Raider fans they are also not very bright. But I am afraid I will have to listen to their bullshit over this one.

  22. alleykat69 says:

Might as well see “Tom Savage porn star“ just to see if he can take a Savage beating as well as the “Beater” does..
Hmmm a Savage Beater,if nothing else they have a new title for a gay porn..

    • Winder says:

I thought Mullens should get a shot even though he looked really over matched in the pre-season, at least he knows the play calls. Just when you think it can’t get any worse.

  23. NJ49er says:

RT I almost pissed myself after reading that CJ couldn’t hold the ball and, could miss his TNF start.
Seems he’s HELD the ball real well (while taking sacks)…. up until now :-d

Gruden already has 3 1st RD Picks in his pocket for next years’ Draft..
We simply need to be 1 slot in front of his 1st one in April.
Put Mullens in there if necessary.
    Just lose this one.

  24. unca_chuck says:

I’m down with Mullens starting. Savage can finish out the season when Mullens goes down.

  25. unca_chuck says:

I’m wondering when Carr goes. Gruden has 9 more years to get this right and he;’s made it abundantly clear that Carr isn’t his guy. He could get another 1st round pick for next year’s draft.

    • NJ49er says:

Carr was a 2nd RDer and carries a hefty price tag now.
Think his deal is in the $125M range?
But….a QB needy team (JAX?) could cough it up, if they’re looking for a quick fix.
Too late now but, dealing a starting QB in April can certainly happen.
The answer to fixing/rebuilding is Draft capital. Took Cleveland years of sucking A$$ to find a legit QB. However, they’ve amassed a boatload of talent, like the Rams did by virtue of Danny Snyder for RG III.
Lynch needs to follow suit. Deal down wherever possible and accumulate Picks.
The trick is, getting talent with those Picks, of course.
So far, he looks like a Rookie GM.

    • DieHardNinerFaithfulSince2011 says:

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? New franchise co-QB alongside the great Jimmy “Joe Montana” G. Sure, we’d have no more money for any other player but a new GM would work wonders and I heard Matt Millen is available! Go San Jose/SF/Santa Clara/South Bay Niners!

  26. rtfirefly says:

The trade deadline has come and gone and Carr’s not a FA for years. Giants, Bucs and Cards would’ve made sense.

  27. Irish Kevin says:

I see the Niners winning this game, Gruden is in full on tank mode. Plus I don’t see the Niners going all in on tanking, otherwise why didn’t the Niners go into tank mode at the end of last year, instead of starting JG they would have brought in their 3rd string QB.

    • unca_chuck says:

Di you say that if Mulllens is the starter? No one really tanks in the NFL, at least the players don’t. But the coaches can certainly affect the outcomes of games.
