In what has to be some kind of record, your San Francisco 49ers have gone from 150-1 odds last year to go to the Super Bowl, to 11-1 odds to reach it this year. And 18-1 odds to win it. Sure, it’s early. But hey they released the numbers, so it’s noteworthy. Also a bit shocking that the wonks in Vegas are clued in to the possibilities of this team going forward.
Teams rarely sneak up on the Vegas oddsmakers, and the 49ers appear to be fully on their radar. Will that win us any games? Unfortunately no, but these guys aren’t in the gambling business to lose money, so they set the Niners line at 8.5 wins as their number to beat. Pretty heady numbers for a team that was at one point 1-10 last year.
Is it too much too soon? Naaah. The NFL is littered with teams coming from seemingly nowhere to win it all, or at least get close to the Big Show.
Really, how close to 1981 does this feel? A young QB leads a scrappy team out of the ashes of the funeral pyre of recent shittiness? A highly touted OC joins a new organization to wake up the team and get them playing fundamentally sound football?
Sure, I’m optimistic, but hey, why not? At least we appear to be in the mix for exciting football (as long as they keep Jimmy G upright). Which at this point is all I really want.

In Vegas it is the early worm that catches the worm. In 81 I think we were 25to1 to win it all it was somewhere in that neighborhood.
Thought it was 50-1 but that was a long time ago.
I mean, as long as JG stays healthy I think 10 wins is guaranteed, maybe more. If he goes down we’re fucked.
That’s true for nearly every team. The Iggles got by with Foles (A Smith redux) and a strong defense. Wonder what would have happened if Kappy got hurt before that Super Bow we lost.

Remember, it was the Vikes’ late hit driving his shoulder into the ground hit on Aaron Rodgers that knocked the Pack out of 1st place, from whence they were laughing at the second class Vikes again.
If the team is still healthy after that game (that time of the season, not just that individual game), I think we’re gonna roll. I think our schedule is like last year, hard first, easier later.
Yeah the first 7 games are going to be a very good indicator of where we are as a team.

Yeah there’s reason for hope as long as Jimmy G and his OL stay healthy. Depth on the roster is critical. The draft looks to be a build-up of the back-end of the roster.
I feel that we are gonna be in every game this year. If the team shows the same competitiveness that it did last year we are gonna be special. I am off my 8-8 and gonna go 9-7. I had a split with Seattle but we should take both games.
I also think the toughest game we play is against the Vikes. If somehow we can razzle-dazzle em and come out on top that would certainly be a shot in the arm for the organization.

The DA’s office has had the video in question for at least a couple weeks at this point. The prosecutor and Foster’s attorney met prior to Tuesday’s hearing, but there is no indication of working toward any sort of plea deal or dropping of charges. Matt Barrows got a copy of the police report from the night in question, and it mentions two potential witnesses: a house guest and the motorist who picked up the alleged victim following the incident. The DA has not offered comment on any of that, and did not speak to the media following Tuesday’s hearing.

The Rockets are the real deal, better than the Cavs were last year in the finals. They copied the Warriors offense, and with James Harden and Chris Paul they can run and gun.
They won the season series 2-1. The Warriors were down about 6 guys to injury for that third game. The Rockets have home court, which the Rockets took while the Warriors were floundering from repeated injury.
Some ex-star I listened to a couple days ago proclaimed, “All these other teams would’ve beat these Warriors easily. Magic’s Lakers, Jordan’s Bulls, The Bad Boys of Detroit…”
I wanted to ask him, “Have you ever seen a 3-pt. shot? Do you understand the concept? You take 5 2-pt. shots, you make 2.5 you get 5.0 pts. on 50% shooting. I make 2 of 5 , I get 6.0 pts. on 40%.

The Laker teams with Kareem and Magic I think were about the best team assembled. As much as I hate to admit that. Russell’s Celtics as well. The rest? Meh. The Dubs could handle all of them.

I’ll take the Celtics with the HOF frontcourt of Bird, (former Warrior) Parrish, and (Warriors had the draft pick for him to play alongside Parrish) McHale, Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge. Not the team that lost 2 of 3 NBA Finals to Magic’s Showtime, the team with Mr. Awesome (LOVED him as an NBA color guy before he bowed out after son Luke became Laker HC. Total California tie-dyed T-shirt dude.). Bill Walton! NBA 6th Man of the Year – that team was ridiculous, fixed the big frontcourt depth problem in spades, doubled and redoubled.
To think, overall #1 pick, power forward/center Len Bias, U. of Maryland, killed himself with cocaine the night he was picked by the Celts…
I’ll still take the Warriors today. None of those other teams had enough 3-pt. shooters to run a modern offense.
Mr. Mean lol. I forgot that one. Larry Smith had The Best rebound/minute # in the league. But of course he couldn’t shoot anything longer than a layup, including free throws. Still, it was his defense that killed him. Guy was a foul machine; he could only play a few minutes at a time. I loved the guy; that intensity was rare on Warrior teams for an awful lot of years.
I was thinking more of those HS kids who came to games in hard hats – The Larry Smith Fan Club, and were spotlighted and on TV once per game; I was able to see a lot of games in Oakland in 1990 (Nolan Ryan no-hitter, *blowing on fingers*).
The Warriors just had a fast break with Klay and Steph easy 2 on 1. Steph got the open 3. Boom! Take that Showtime Lakers!
This is so rare to watch and I don’t know how long it will last, not to mention Jerry West is now scouting talent for the LA (nee Buffalo, re-nee San Diego) Clippers.

This’ll be interesting to see the Warriors open on the road. If they can come out and blow past them in game 1, it’ll do a lot going forward. Livingston has been so hot and cold. Game 4 I saw him miss 5 easy shots in a row as their lead shrank.
THe Warriors are their own worst enemy. If they limit the turnovers and create their own, they will win handily. 5 games. If they get sloppy with the ball, they will lose. Houston is a great ball-hawking team, and since they basically don’;t pass the ball much, they don’t turn it over much. Keep it around 10 turnovers a game and they’ll be fine. Throw in an 18 turnover game and they’ll lose.
They’ll likely keep the core 4 for at least a couple more years if not longer.

A friend of mine got me a signed football, personally, from Gilliam, very kind of him. I felt bad for him, finally got into a starting role at RT and gets a season ending injury almost immediately.

I remember Pete McCulley part of a 3 headed coaching disaster in 77 -78 under GM joke Joe Thomas.. Man those were lean times with very little meat on the bone..
Lol, those were totally inept and crazy times. Incompetent is probably a better word for it.
Clark was a great coach who got shafted by Joe the schmoe, ’76 was the beginning of a great season that got derailed by injuries.
Yeah that Joe Thomas came in and destroyed that Clark led team. Before Walsh was hired the seasons of the early Thomas years were very forgettable. Bad PR and bad teams were the norm. Ouch!
Reading the Sports pages in those days were painful. Real painful.
Yeah, we had a great defense when Clark was managing. I didn’t understand the move to get rid of him at all.
I think the highlight of that season was shutting out the Rams on Monday Night Football 16-0. Tommy Hart had a shitload of sacks that game.
