Meanwhile, Back to, Uh, the Quiet

How bout that Pro Bowl? didn’t see it, don’t know who won, don’t even know where they played it. I’m assuming it’s somewhere near ROB as he said he might go. so, Flo Rida? Did you go ROB??? Speaking of bowls, the 49ers met with UTEP guard Will Hernandez at the Senior Bowl a couple weeks ago. Hernandez, who is 6′ 3″ and 330 lb is rated as the 2nd or 3rd best guard coming of the board, behind of course Quentin Nelson. He got a ton of positive press during practice week, and the only knock is his apparently short arms.

Thing is, he’s not worth a 9 pick, and he’ll likely be gon by the time we take our 2nd pick (NO’s 2nd round pick at 59), so the deal here is we trade down. Frankly I like this thought as we need a lot of depth, and getting more picks in the high and middle rounds is very prudent. Hernandez started 49 straight games, and over 2,800 snaps during his college career, and seems to be the real deal. He’s a straight-ahead blocker, so he’ll need to adapt to our zone blocking scheme, but then again, we didn’t run ZBS all the  time. Here’s a nice write-up on him from another blog.

Hey who knows? I’d be much happier with this guy and Garnett than what we had last year.

PS. I do miss Twin’s love for Young Sir Alex.

It’s about time, we’re finally have a front office that is willing to sign some free agents that can help this team !

    • Winder says:

Lets see what they do with FA this year, should be a lot of fun.
Last thing I will say about Twin. He had a funny side to him that was relentless. He used to ride “old seals fan: just like a donkey. It was good stuff.

      • Winder says:

I think they stick at 9 or 10 because they probably won;t see it again for quite awhile. They will probably go defense since there are quite a few promising players there.

  2. rob says:

Hernandez was on my radar too CHUCK ! Good pick in 2 !
I live in Orlando and was thinking of going down to camping world stadium and see if any ex niner greats were wandering around like Jerry or Deion or maybe Steve Young !

  3. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Winder, Old Seal Fan was Seal Clubber to Twin. One of many nicknames he threw around.

And yeah, they could play this a bunch of different ways. They should go CB if Nelson isn’t available? Or pass rusher.

So you are saying BPA at 9? Thankfully the coin flip with the Raiders doesn’t really matter as they are going ILB most likely. Man, it would be odd to see them take a D lineman for the 4th year in a row.

    • Winder says:

Yeah, I don’t waht to see another D-line go in the 1st again either. An OLB would be fine with me and that is probably the best way to get a pass rush anyway. Thomas and Defo are pretty good in the middle

Wow, took a look at the older threads and found this beauty:

Wow. Paranoia, anyone? Phil, you’re just a distasteful worm. The only dynamic working here is that you’ve exposed yourself as a possibly dangerous wacko . Thank goodness you’ve already been expelled from our country. As you’ve found out, your kind is not tolerated here and never will be. Now don’t you have some pig’s eyes to poke out for dinner?

I had to edit about 60 posts between Twin and Phil. Forgot about Phil . . . someone that went WAAAY around the bend.

  5. unca_chuck says:

When he started posting as two different people and arguing with himself (and calling one a hacker) is when I canned him.

  6. alleykat69 says:

Ahh young Sir Alex as Twin use to call him. Well Sir Alex Smith has a new home, just got traded to the Redskins who will save 17mil on cap money.Cousins moving on now?
Mahomes leads the Chiefs now, should be interesting..

  7. Lurker John says:

Alex Smith traded to the Redskins.

  8. NJ49er says:

DT Vita Vea could be a option in the Top 15 too.
Fat Man in the Middle anyone? 😀

Assuming at this point that Quenton and Minkah won’t make it to 9/10.
BPA would likely dictate the decision there.
Liking what I’ve read and seen from OLB Tremaine Edmunds. Whether he’s a better option than Vea, I sure couldn’t say right now.
Lot’s of homework to do, mainly with the Combines, to decide if a CB makes the grade at 9/10.
Still want a tall WR from this Draft too. Where? Who knows?
Want to see some 40 times from Indy to determine if there might be a viable option beyond RD1.

This kid has some phenomenal stats, albeit from a not so stellar program –
Hope he’ll be in Indy, and will settle my curiosity with a better 40 than is published now.

Jake Wieneke, WR, South Dakota St. Height: 6-4 Weight: 215 40-Time: 4.60

Alex Smith traded to the Redskins, who immediately extend his contract for 4 years.

Crazy. I figured Reid should have walked the plank as well for hosing that Titans game up,

Twin would be beside himself. Cousins to the Browns?

  10. NJ49er says:

Means Cousins could eff up the QB Order in the Top 10 now too.
    NYJ?
Be nice if we had a little leverage to deal down, should another QB needy Team want to come up.

Read some news that 9ers interviewed DT Natahn Shepherd at the Sr Bowl in Mobile.
Could suggest a willingness to wait for a Fat Man in the Middle beyond RD1 too?
Vea is getting comparisons to Suh and Ngata. I’d be PERFECTLY OK with him in RD1.

Vita Vea, DT, Washington Height: 6-5 Weight: 340 40-Time: 5.35
    GP TKL TFL SACK
    40 100 15.0 9.5

Nathan Shepherd, DT, Fort Hays St Height: 6-5 Weight: 300 40-Time: 5.20
    GP TKL TFL SACK
    45 188 34.0 12.5

  11. NJ49er says:

How about Lynch + Stanford = Fat Man in the Middle?

Harrison Phillips, DT, Stanford Height: 6-4 Weight: 295 40-Time: 4.95
    GP TKL TFL SACK
    34 159 29.5 17.0

  12. NJ49er says:

I drooled, (years ago) for Vince Wilfork when we had a chance to get him, (and passed).
If Vea has that sort of potential, I’d be all in for his selection with Pick 1.

As with any Draft, it all comes down to slotting.
Every team shops for specific pieces going in.
Always have to prepare for the possibilities, that you’ll miss your targets, due to slotting.
If Vea is the best DT, like Quenton Nelson is the consensus best OG, why not Vea?

    • Winder says:

It this one is anything like the last draft I am pretty sure we are gonna pick some pretty good players. But, if Cousins goes to Cleveland then there are two non QB’s off the board at # 4 and that will change everything. I hope he goes to denver. But he could very well go to AZ too.

  13. NJ49er says:

KC Chiefs site reports terms for Alex –

The Chiefs will receive cornerback Kendall Fuller in addition to a 2018 third-round pick in a trade which sends quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

  14. NJ49er says:

    KC now holds Picks 54/78/86
    NYJ hold 6/37/49/72
Cousins on the open Mkt will make things interesting now in terms of QB deals in April’s Draft.

KC doesn’t have a 2nd RD Pick at the moment.
Browns are sitting pretty with the potential to steal Picks from QB needy teams if they sign Cousins.
    Browns are holding 1/4/33/35/65 too.
Barkley could go at Pick 1 if Cleveland so desires…..

  15. rob says:

Smith is still paying off for us ! Now we will end up with garappolo or cousins !

  16. rob says:

I’m excited by our chances ! We came back under Harbaugh for a while but with our HC , QB , and GM in place things are starting to fall into place !

  17. unca_chuck says:

Getting Cousins doesn’t preclude Cleve/Jets getting a QB in the draft. I still think both are gone before we pick.

  18. unca_chuck says:

We aren’t getting Cousins, Rob. No way. Garoppolo is it.

  19. rob says:

Now with one more good offseason we’re in business ! Last year our draft was first rate ! This year we can have another good draft and add a top tier free agent or two !
