Bleacher Report is, uh, reporting that Jimmy Garoppolo has been named the starting quarterbacker for the upcoming Chicago Bears game. Time to show the world if the braintrust knows what they are up to. So it looks like barring yet another injury, Jimmy G will be the starter for the rest of the season, as in the next 4 games.
Huzzah.
Thing is, this is the part of the schedule that I thought the team would be coalescing around their young buck coach and gaining momentum as we head off into the sunset and the bright future with our new QB. Instead, the team is in tattered rags around him. The latest to hit the bricks is back up RT Erik Magnuson, who is out with a foot sprain, and Trent Brown is still day-to-day with his shoulder injury. The backup to the backup is rookie Darrell Williams Jr, or (gulp) Zane Beadles. Magnuson kinda sucked at center, and the rest of the line has been shakey as fuck, so . . . I hope Jimmy G has a quick trigger finger. He may have a very short run.
In other news, ST star gunner, Raheem Mostert is heading to the IR with a knee injury, and free safety Adrian Colbert, who looked great against the Giants, is questionable for the Bears game. Woof!
In other weird news, Ben McAdoo, coach of the New York Giants, decided to bench Eli Manning. You know, the guy who is the face of the franchise. The guy who won 2 Super Bowls. the guy who is the most respected player on the team. And get this, Geno Smith gets the start in his place! And I thought the Buffalo Bills were stupid to bench Tyrod Taylor for a Nathan’s cheeseburger. 5 ints in one half, and THAT coach can’t commit to Tyrod even still. Nucking Futs.
Not that I really give a shit, but it shows that the 49ers and Raiders don’t corner the market on ineptitude in the front office. It is spreading.
I at least like the direction this team is going. The Giants are in a world of hurt now and for the next 3 season at least.
NYG seem to be playing the Draft Position Sweepstakes game now Chuck.
Time for them to see if Geno is serviceable and, whether replacing Eli with a Draftee in April makes any sense, I guess?
As I suggested in the previous thread, taking a look at EVERYONE in game situations is what I’d be doing at this point.
Whether poaching from another Teams’ PS or, testing our own, it’s better to get game tape on them at this level, than to project a potential College Draftee into the same scenario come April.
We’ll see Jimmy, (with little to no knowledge of the System at this point) so, I wouldn’t put too much value into what he can accomplish on Sunday.
It’s gonna be real vanilla at best I’d assume?
It’s Da Bears, (with Trubiski) after all, vs us, with the new shiny object and, several years of Pro Coaching under his belt at least. Advantage Jimmy?
He’ll also be debuting in his home town pretty much so, there’s that, to get some hype going for him too.
My guess is, this will be a very quick game as I expect both Teams to be leaning on the RBs over the passing attack. We’ll see….
Lynch and Shanny have nothing to lose by trotting out as many options as possible before it’s over and done for ’17.
Mike Periera says bad call gave the seacocks a first and goal at the one instead of a field goal ! finally got one right ! that is being sited as a game changer … go figure !
The jest are playing for a draft pick ? Anybody but me notice our roster moves lately?
We’re evaluating our roster
We are obviously looking for that needle-in- a-haystack and I don’t think we have found em yet. I do have feeling that Marsh is gonna stick around. I really hope KS has a game plan to protect Jimmy G. because I doubt he could hold up to what CJ went through. Anyway, this should be a very busy offseason in FA, we should be able to tell what the players feel like about coming out here. I still believe in Lynch and KS but the players are the ones that really know. I didn’t realize how Baalky/Jed totally fucked up our team until I saw this years roster.. We actually have a respected FO now with Peters, Mayhew, and Lynch and I am pretty sure those guys are not here just for the paycheck.
The fact that CJ is here now means he’s likely protected. They aren’t going to PS him at this point, or the offseason.
Yeah, I think KS really likes CJ.
In that vein this means we likely don’t draft a QB high. If we draft QB it’ll be someone we can PS.
Apparently the Chronicle misspelled Jimmy G.’s name. That’s according to KNBR our local sports leader. The once proud Chronicle reduced to begging on the internet for money just like any pan handler on Market St.
CJ has already established himself as a competent back up in the NFL, as a rookie, behind that O line. No mean feat. He needs some time to learn the game like Wentz and Goff but could contend to start on some teams including the Niners IMO. A huge tip of the cap to CJ’s pure guts, what a beating that kid took. He deservers a lot of credit for his play.
Jimmy G has the highest QB rating of all time for his first 90 NFL throws, ahead of Aaron Rodgers. At a minimum that shows his accuracy and decision making is at a very high level.
I expect JG to play better than CJ was able to but don’t expect miracles for obvious depleted roster reasons. I do think he can make the team more productive on O in these next 5 games and don’t think they go back to CJ this year.
I don’t expect the Niners to take a QB this draft, they have 2 solid if a little green QB’s on active roster and a 3rd on the PS. The team has to spend in FA liberally to surround the QB’s with competent O linemen and take one or maybe 2 in the draft.
This defense would be dominant with a quality pass rusher and a starting quality CB, outside of those 2 crucial needs I think Lynch must lean heavily O this draft. I think they lose Carlos Hyde in FA regardless of if they want him so a RB, at least 1 WR and better 2, a TE and an O linemen.
I usually prefer to take D with the very high picks but they can’t ignore the O year after year and expect to compete. This draft is key to the turnaround. Lynch had a very solid draft and a second like that plus opening the checkbook in FA puts the Niners back in the competitive football column.
I don’t believe in tanking for a high pick, better to play as hard as they can for a win every game. It’s more important to establish the winning culture and set the tone for the team to start next year on a good footing than hang your hopes on a draft pick to be the savior of the team.
Looking forward to seeing Jimmy G play but with tempered expectations.
I agree with just about everything you said. And I feel the same way about tanking. I am pretty sure the players that don’t give 100% now won’t be here later.
And, I can’t see any of our coaches tanking anything. Of course it’s hard to tell when it comes to play calling. Like running up the middle with a banged up oline and everyone on defense knows it’s coming.
Tanking is very frowned upon in the NFL. For the players, it’s pretty easy to spot. Coaching is harder, but the coaches are trying to change the culture, and they need to reinforce the fact that the team is young and green. And improving. With a good draft next year, the team could be at 8-8 or 9-7. The caveat being health of course. Because I even think this year the team could have been a 5-6 win team without the rash of injuries.
And I don’t think the offense has a watershed moment, but I do expect to see improvement. Enough to win, anyway.
Tanking must be a media invention. No one wants to admit to it. Players are playing for their jobs either now or in the future. So are the coaches. The GM has to answer to ownership. Fans will not tolerate it. Teams that sell or get rid of their better players pay a heavy price in future sales. A sports team that loses it’s credibility is in big trouble.
Tru dat. But, taking out a SB QB that just happens to be the best player on the team at the moment and putting in Gino doesn’t really make any sense. That is not even being fan friendly and it is definitely stirring up the masses. My guess is they lose this week.
Those Warriors tried to piss that game away in LA last night. Luckily they came away in OT with a win. Some nights are just that way.
WOOF!
Tanking is pretty easy to do with out being obvious, running the ball when you have a Swiss cheese Oline, Dropped pass here and there, over throwing a pass, do players buy into that? Probably not but who knows
If they buy into it…….they’re finished. Their brand is destroyed.
With all the dropped passes and continuing to try to run the ball 🏈 I would question the Niners at times
Man, I had a brilliant, long long long post wondering how I can suddenly get back in here followed by a detailed analysis of our draft needs – and more! One slip of my left pinky and POOF! My PCs undocumented feature random hidden hot keys strikes again!
Screw it, maybe once again in my lifetime I’ll feel like going into such exquisite detail in a post. Not now.
The Bears are a much better team at home than on the road (beat Steelers, crushed Panthers), the Texans are a hot mess without Watson and J.J. Watt, the Jags suck for 7-3 (lucked out against Chargers, barely beat Browns), the Titans impress nobody, and the Rams are a well known divisional opponent. We could blow our whole draft position easily now with Jimmy G. starting. We lose the draft tiebreaker to pretty much everybody but the Bears. At least my 5-11 prediction is still in reach!
How’s the Russian blog doing? They still saluting the Russia flag every morning and starting the day with their Bend-Over-For-Putin exercises? I wouldn’t know; I gave up on the traitors. Wait till they discover the “tax cut” RAISES their taxes to give to Trump and family. Ha ha too bad so sad. Bye bye Medicaid and Social Security…
Nice to be back! Knowing the internet in this town, and my previous woes trying to get on here, it might be the last time, but hey! I’ll take it.
A “New Dawn?” How many times can one package up and sell hope in a different way? Don’t worry, boys. We’ll get ’em next year. And we might spend years of our lives wasting away watching this team but when we go back to our 50 year reunions, drinking beer and listening to Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days,” nobody will be able to say you were bandwagon 49er fans. But the cool kids now 70 years old, with rich lives and families and travel, they’ll think (know) you’re all idiots.
What the hell are you guys doing still following this abortion of a football team? And even worse, you’re blogging about it….
perfectly stated . What else do you have to say
spit- You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. This team is gonna shine.
WOOF!
When, Winder? I get the impression Jed York travels the world in a jet and laughs at all the money the NFL makes him. Firing 3 coaches in 3 years and paying millions for coaching contracts shows Jed isn’t concerned about money. He’s not cheap. He just has other pursuits. Who cares if in SF the fans pay for billboards demonizing him, or airplanes to carry disparaging messages about him in tow? The espresso still tastes the same in France. The bulls are deadly in Spain. Nobody knows York and his family when they travel the world on NFL dollars. Do you really think Jed York still cares about this 49er team? Are you still buying the Uncle Eddie routine? It’s a half-assed attempt by York to make idiots like you guys continue to follow. Sprinkle in a few propaganda messages of “Be a diehard fan,” and the whoopleheads get out their flags….. and waste their lives.
spit- none of what you just said means anything to me. I don’t give a shit if Jed is a closet ballerina. How long it’s gonna take? I am not sure, Both GM and HC have long-term contracts and I really like what they have done so far. They have pretty much wiped the Baalky off the shoes of this organization and the smell is almost gone.
Yeah, a “New Dawn,” right? How many times are they gonna scoop that one up for you and have you lap at the bowl for it? First it was Donahue and Erickson, and after they were gone you were pumped-up for Nolan and McCloughan. Then after they sucked, it was Harbaugh and Baalke. Now, twenty years later it’s Lynch and Shanahan.
This team won’t go anywhere because the owner sucks at assessing talented front office people and/ or coaches, or developing any talented front office people to fill holes. What the heck does Paraag Marathe do? Why are the 49ers always hiring from outside and Marathe’s job? It’s Jed York and Paraag Marathe and that’s it in the front office?
Lynch will do okay in the beginning, but Shanahan won’t be able to sustain losing season after losing season, and eventually it will be Lynch and some other dude who prefers this scheme and players built for that style of play. Next thing you know Lynch is doing a mini overhaul to the roster to accommodate the new coach and it doesn’t work so the media starts second-guessing the GM and he eventually gets fired by the CEO, Jed York, who makes a “fire me up” statement about the new GM and why it’s gonna be different the next go ’round as he flies with his wife and kids to Europe to escape the NFL football season with all the millions the NFL funnels into his pocket on a monthly basis.
So, yeah. Good luck Lynch and Shanahan. Go team!
spit- you really do need to move on. But you are right that I was fired up about Nolan at first and Harbaugh. But not for the same reasons, they were two total different situations. Your generalities don’t really speak to the issues the team faced at the time. But that is ok too. I am glad you got both Lynch and KS figured out. I think your wrong but that’s ok too.
Yeah but Jimmy G. is finally getting to start. You got to be happy about that.
I really appreciate KS media approach. Just watched him at the podium and he is open, straight forward, honest as much as a coach can be, not adversarial or combative and even with the way this season has gone he still manages the media in a decent manner.
Like Winder, I think there has been a sea change at the foundation of the franchise, together with Lynch these guys are doing it the right way and have a 10 loss team playing like its the playoffs.
Speaks volumes.
Spit really enjoys this place. He puts out long posts and airs his misgivings about the Niners. Now if he didn’t care, he wouldn’t post his feelings. Perhaps he’s a glass half empty type of guy.
What I do care about, Nipper, is downright shaming you guys into following another team or dropping the NFL all together. Both the 49ers and the NFL are a joke now. Seen any good hits lately? Didn’t think so….
“Shaming,” you can’t be serious.
I’m as serious as a Jim Tomsula heart attack.
Even worse, Spitty, you are reading the blog. That’s the funny part. Shit rolls downhill and it’s stopping on your head.
Spit is the Trump of the blog. Don’t feed the troll.
What’s to read? He writes the same shit year after year, as though there is some magic formula to being a winner in the NFL and then define winner? Nothing less than a SB every year? Playoffs every year? That moron would never be satisfied with anything.
Any fool knows the NFL is designed to be cyclical with the only outlier in living memory being the Pats for the very reason the Niners were in that same position, remarkable coach and QB. There’s no magic to it, its just nigh on impossible to achieve because a very large dose of pure luck is involved.
If it were easy, every team would do it. The turnover coaching rate at 4949 is a testament to the search for “that” coach. Only time will tell, but one thing I know is that Harbaugh, although very successful for a period of time, wasn’t it.
Fan isn’t a term defined by winning.
tru dat
“Fan isn’t a term defined by winning.”
It’s the perfect definition of a Front Runner 12th.
The guys that follows the winners, in an effort to feel like one.
No loyalty. No Fan.
Exactly.
GO TEAM! I hope Jimmy G. has a great game!
Nerves on the first pass
Wow 😮 a 3rd and long and a pass greater than 3 yards
Already looking better
Is everyone still sleeping 😴 Wakeup Charlie!!
Nice first drive, Jimmy G did some nice things.
so many penalties
Same story every week.
Jimmy also inspiring the D to play better also
D might actually get to rest a bit.
I wouldn’t even hand the ball off to Hyde anymore I would just throw it to him
That sucked.
we don’t do 3rd and long very well
Need to bring pressure
Trubisky too much time, not getting there with 4 enough.
Jimmy G does throw a catchable ball.
that’s more like it
we waste so many opportunities
Yeah but wow did JG move the ball.
Lol
OLine at fault again
JG took a big hit on that Goodwin pass.
O is definitely better so far.
Niners need a bigger back for these 1yard runs
Penalties killing scoring opportunities, TE then WR…WTF.
4 FG won’t get it done.
The biggest difference today, the ball is fucking coming out. Hopefully young CJ is taking notes.
Still shootting themselves in the foot, Jimmy can only do so much, someone other than JG needs to step up
The O has looked night and day with JG in there, with actual time of possession.
The OL still provides little in the way of space for the backs to run into. You look at Hyde’s stats on the surface and they look mediocre, but they’ve been tough yards and at least helped balance the offense. Our line just sucks ass at run blocking.
JG’s quickness at getting rid of the ball has mitigated what has also been pretty mediocre pass pro.
I’ve never heard of Cassius Marsh, but nice play there. He did have 4 career sacks coming in.
A TD would be very nice here. Take a shot to Goodwin on 1st down.
Hochuli is a dirty dick licker who should’ve been put out to pasture years ago. What a fucking joke.
FUCKING PENALTIES SHANAHAN.
The Niners are dominating this game statistically. They need to do whatever it takes to get a win here.
Quit trying to block tackle, wrap your arms around that guy
A Field Goal will win this, come on Niners, JG first win!!
Im not so sure, they need 7.
Who isn’t stoked about Adrian Colbert? The dude looks like a serious baller, almost, dare I say it, in the mold of Earl Thomas. Speedy, hard hitting with good instincts for the game. If Ward can’t make the transition to CB, we may have seen the last of him in SC.
JG and Marquis with instant chemistry.
4 down territory from here on out.
big time play there
Taylor!
and JG
Oh yeah. See my post below!
JG comes from a system that knows how to utilize the slot receiver, big time. What a coincidence, Taylor is having his best game ever.
Third down magic today boys.
Eschew the FG, Kyle, let’s get 6!
I want a TD, don’t be a pussy play caller, take a shot to the end zone
agree
Yes! Yoos-Check!!
don’t fumble!
direcTV froze before the FG attempt
My Directv was fine,
watching it on computer at my office.
He drilled it right down the middle then looked at the Chicago bench.
nice, good for Gould, 5 FG equals his record.
YEAH BABY! THE JIMMY G ERA HAS BEGUN!
Entertaining game! Jimmy looks like the real deal to me!
me too.
I guess when you are 1-10 you play conservative. Run, run, run
They threw 300 yds
Hey, that’s fine when it works and it did. The run game came up big at the end this week. Great win! Dominant win!
Jimmy was 26/37 for 293 yards and the one pick that wasn’t really his fault. He looked fantastic as far as I’m concerned, like a real NFL QB. No TD’s, but given that this was his first game, I see a lot of good things for this offense moving forward.
Damn, so many good things about this game!
If we could coral the mistakes we would have scored some 7’s
It was a very satisfying win
We need O-linemen and a better run game
I think Hyde should be resigned along with improving the line. He ran his ass off today and made some key runs at the end. The numbers won’t show that, but I watched the whole game and that’s what I saw. With a good line I think he’d be having a big year. Plus, he’s staying on the field. They may not sign him, but I think they should. He’s been running behind a shit line all year.
I think he goes to the highest bidder which won’t be the Niners.
I wouldn’t mind re-signing him but I still think he’s a # 2 back at best.
I disagree. No Niner back will ever look good running behind that line. No way Carlos Hyde is a #2 back.
Everyone has their own opinion and that is a good thing. I just look at it like this. Wendel Tyler, Roger Craig, /Ricky Waters, Garrison Hearst, Charlie Gardner, Frank Gore. Without a doubt I would take any one of those over Hyde. Sure Hyde breaks one off now and again but that’s about it. Running backs are supposed to find the holes.
You can’t find what’s not there. SF run blocking sucks. When they improve that, all their backs will have more success. Listing some of the best backs in team history doesn’t lessen Hyde’s abilities.
Lurker- I didn’t list those running backs to lesson Hyde’s abilities. i listed them because that is what # 1 running backs look like.
To me he is a starter but nothing out of the ordinary.
Yeah he can go elsewhere. Backs now are like temps. He’s no Gore in his prime.
I love it when we beat the Bears. There is a long-long history of some pretty crazy games between those two teams.
We have played them 66 times. 30 times in Chicago and 36 in SF. Regular season record is 31-31-1.We have played them 3 times in the post season and won them all.
Grappy looked good. Not really a surprise.
Hah! Was in the city last night at my co X-mas party. went to baker beach this morning and it was gorgeous. Unreal day. Didn’t listen to or hear about the game and came home around 3 to watch it.
My son didn’t even let on how it ended. The offense looked night and day over what we have seen. JImmy G was very good, and if not for some seriously shitty calls and self-inflicted wounds, we would have scored more.
Truth be told, I could live with Brieda and Hyde as the running backs. But we NEED wide receivers in a gigantic way. Colbert looks like the real deal. We need cornerbacks tho. Pass rush is still inconsistent, but the D overall played very well. And for all the penalties called on the Niners, the refs missed an obvious call on the punt runback TD. So the d only gave up 7.
Shit. look at Mike Davis go.
Looks like the combo of Shanahan and garrapolo is the real deal ! Awesome !
mike davis ? That would be icing on the cake !
It was a game even Spit could enjoy. Of course he would be grousing about the lack a TD in Niners offensive output. And of course he would still be thinking we’re a bunch of idiots! Go Spit!
You won’t see Shittie around here today, too much good stuff happened yesterday.
Agree, Chuck, the pass rush needs to improve, as do the WR’s, in addition to the glaringly bad OL. I’m really excited to see how Colbert pans out. He and Witherspoon are looking like they could really contribute moving forward.
Amazing, though, how much better receivers can look with the right guy throwing the ball. I was a little surprised they didn’t take a couple of shots deep with Goodwin, but I expect we’ll see more of that in coming weeks.
Even Skeebers is happy or as happy as he ever gets after this latest game.
12th is probably right about Hyde, he’ll land somewhere else due to cost. The Niners will also have Joe Williams next year, but he and Breida are unproven (Breida less so), so it remains to be seen if they can carry the load. Assuming Hyde doesn’t come back, they’ll likely draft a RB or two. A good sized chunk of that cap money should go to massively improving the line.
I agree, the Oline should be a top priority. With Staley and Brown in there we are OK but we need a few bruisers at guard and center that can open some holes. As yesterday proved we are not bad on defense when we don’t have to spend all day on the field. Of course we went up against a rookie QB but still our defense played a hell of a game. I think last years draft is gonna go down as one of SF’s very best.
Ben McAdoo fired. An in season firing by the Giants shows what an idiotic move it was to bench Eli.
I just hope Eli doesn’t end up in AZ.
Good point.
Eli would get killed in AZ. AZ is in free-fall.
The GM too!
They need a big full Back like Tom Rathman. Hyde is to small for 3rd and goal. I still think they should have tried a pass to the end zone at the end of the game. An interception could happen just as surely a fumble, so take the shot
You can bet JG thinks that way too.
They don’t use Juice enough on short yardage IMO.
OJ just got out of jail, what Juice are you speaking of? 😂😂
Lol, not that one for sure. Kyle Juszczyk. Since no one can spell it or pronounce it for that matter, he is juice.
Niners dropped to #3 in the draft after the Bears win.
New thread is up.
