Game Two Blues

Game was was shakey and penalty-filled/ Game Two? Even shakier still, and penalty-filled. Fumbles fumbles fumbles. 5 of them to be exact. One TO was called a pick, but it was all on Goodwin not securing the pass and letting the CB take it away. Whatever the score was, 33-14? what progress was starting to show itself for the 1st string offense was thwarted by the 4 first half turnovers. I actually thought Hoyer looked very good, short of the (tuck rule?) fumble, but the run game never got going, and Hyde missed the hole a few times amid a poor blocking performance by the O line. Hightower didn’t help with a stupid fumble, and Hyde mishandled a pitch as well.

Rashard Robinson continues to look poor to awful in his coverage and especially his tackling.  He whiffed on a 3rd down stop that would have forced a punt but instead led to a 7 yard gain and a 1st down. And he got called for a stupid PI call in the end zone. He did cover nicely on a deep ball thrown his way, however. The defense played well given the field position advantage that the Niner O constantly gave them. But, the pass rush has nothing to show so far. Run D looks good.

CJ Beathard looked solid in his 2nd half start. He drove the team to their only TD drive with a nice crossing route to Aldrick Robinson and a tough athletic play by rookie TE George Kittle. That was pretty much the offensive highlight. Special teams is a pretty big concern to me even with the TD by Victor Boldin. Penalties and missed assignments abound.

We’d better hope this game was an outlier, or we are in for another 4 win season. I’m hopeful that the team will gel a little more and be able to play around .500 ball.

Forgot to mention Eric Reid. He had a very good game. Haven’t seen him this good since his rookie year.

And to go along with this shit, the pre-snap penalties are really bad. 2 on the first 2 drives.

  2. NJ49er says:

I was impressed with the energy on Defense personally.
Guys were going at it with vigor, nice to see, especially in PS.
Might be hope for Tank and Harold in the current scheme as well.
Anxious to see Ward and Tartt together, hopefully Sunday night in MN.
All things considered, I can’t see it getting worse than 2-14.
Hedging my early predictions between 5-6 wins, based strictly on the schedule at this point.

Special teams should be fun, with additions of Taylor and an assumed position for Bolden.
Bolden should be an asset as a KR while he lobbies for time in the WR Corps.
I’m thinking Hightower might have did himself in with the fumble that killed a pretty promising Drive the other night too?

See how it shakes out in a couple of weeks…..
Deals pending for VMcD/Carlos perhaps? Seek an OG with either as a sweetener?

    • Winder says:

NJ-I think the Oline is our weak spot too. I love the speed on defense also but we didn’t pressure the QB at all, I don’t know what’s up with that. The penalties show we don’t have our timing down yet and that is so important come gameday. I think by the end of the year or sooner CJ will be the starter. We need to find a franchise QB,

  3. rob says:

NJ Tank seems to have impressed so far .

  4. unca_chuck says:

8-8 seems like a hopeful prediction at this point. But I’ll stick with it.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Too funny. Larry Krieger is touting starting Beathard. Check out the comments…

49ers should hand the reins to C.J. Beathard right now

    • 12th Man says:

Interesting idea. Hoyer played well against the donkeys and I felt he could help win games, maybe not carry a team but be a net positive.

Beathard played very well “for a rookie”, but he did miss a couple of opportunities but I can’t honestly say the Niners would lose much if he was in in place of Hoyer, at least in that particular game.

The safe play is start Hoyer of course, but I think Beathard has already beaten out hot tub and is not too far from Hoyer.

Would I risk it, no, but the O line is protecting well so it wouldn’t be really crazy, especially if Hoyer flops.

    • Nipper says:

Larry K tends to overstate his positions on KNBR also. They tend to hire guys who run off with the mouth probably to drive up ratings.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Not crazy, just ill-advised. I could see if Hoyer stinks it up for 5-6 games and the season goes in the shitter, but Krieger basing this on a handful of preseason possessions is ludicrous.

This isn’t Dak Prescott coming into a team and situation where the pieces are in place. This is a team in search of something resembling consistency. Putting a rook in charge of it would be foolish.

  7. Winder says:

I think CJ has potential but he needs some seasoning before being thrown to the wolves. But, that was what Hoyer was brought here for. This is a baby steps year. But I think we will be surprised how the team on the whole plays. They gotta knock the penalty shit off.

  8. rob says:

exactly WINDER . I’d like to see C.J. get some action towards the end of the season.

  9. rob says:

good news .Tank Carradine is getting rave reviews from the new coaches ! words like elite are coming out ! I was happy when we drafted him so this might finally be his moment ! Eric reid is back to !!!

  10. rob says:

Holy crap ! did Harold beat out brooks ! wow !

  11. Irish Kevin says:

I am not surprised Brooks is gone, was hurt last year I want to say, and he is what 31, they did the right. Thing releasing him so some one will pick him up.

  12. Winder says:

Someone in our division will pick him up, they always do. This is a rebuilding year and that move really showed it,

  13. NJ49er says:

    Uh-oh…
Pats lose Edelman for the year. The dreaded ACL/Out for the season diagnosis.
    The Pre-Season claims another victim.

  14. Berger says:

Add Keller Chryst to the QB watch list for this year. I only saw about 10 plays but he stands in the pocket, goes through his reads, has a good arm and has great form. Since he is from Stanford, the bay area fans will get a good look this year.

  15. Lurker John says:

Anybody who thinks Seattle won’t sign Brooks needs to rethink it. They sign everyone SF cuts. Harold has his shot but he’d better perform. If he doesn’t he won’t last long as the starter. Still not sure he has what it takes to be a big time NFL guy, but I’ll gladly eat my words if I’m wrong.

  16. Lurker John says:

Dolphins listening to trade offers for Jarvis Landry. 204 receptions for 2,293 yards over the past 2 seasons. Them’s some pretty damn good numbers. What say you?

    • Lurker John says:

Strikes me as an Anquan Boldin type of receiver. Same powerful build type and strong hands.

      • Winder says:

Those are good #’s. I actually think we got some good WR’s already we just have to find someone to get the ball to em.

  17. Lurker John says:

Read an interesting piece the other day about how it took the Falcons a full season to fully grasp and implement Shanny’s complex running scheme. They went from 3.8 yds per carry as a team in 2015 to 4.6 yds per carry as a team last year, and we all saw how effective their ground game was. The timing and correct participation of all 11 offensive players is critical and explains why the team hasn’t run the ball well so far this preseason.

    • Winder says:

If the Refs would stop moving the chains in the wrong direction maybe we would have a running game.

  18. NJ49er says:

Belichick just cut Kony Ealy after dealing for him.
Brooks might be an option there?
See who gives him a look soon enough.
Could be a money thing right now to clear up?

  19. Lurker John says:

BOOM. Now that was an encouraging start.

  20. Lurker John says:

Foster has some serious closing speed.

  21. Grumpy Guy says:

Hey! Our starters actually scored a Touchdown!

    Only took three games.

  22. Winder says:

    Now that’s more like it

  23. Lurker John says:

The team has come out with a lot of energy to start this game.

  24. Lurker John says:

These guys look fucking awesome. Just some surgical movement down the field. Still need to get that running game going, but Hoyer looks fantastic. Garcon is going to be a nice addition. It’s easy to see him as Hoyer’s favorite target.

  25. Winder says:

OK, we gotta not stop this drive. I can see where this offense will drive defenses crazy if we don’t make mistakes

  26. Lurker John says:

    WhooHoo!

  27. Winder says:

I didn’t know Hyde could catch the ball so good

  28. Lurker John says:

Hyde is a pretty good option out of the backfield. He looks quick and shifty and has great hands.

  29. Lurker John says:

The corners will be the undoing of this defense. Serious lack of talent at that position. Dontae Johnson has no business in the NFL and Rashard Robinson is seriously under playing his advance billing.

  30. Winder says:

I was gonna say something but I don’t want to jinx it.

  31. Lurker John says:

Beathard looks awful in this game.

  32. Winder says:

    that was pretty nice

  33. Lurker John says:

10 seconds after that comment, he goes for an 87 yard pass-and-catch play to Mostert. ROFL.

  34. Winder says:

At least this game is interesting

  35. Winder says:

    nice fucking drive so far

  36. Lurker John says:

Beathard has found a nice rhythm. Good on him for hanging in there.

  37. Lurker John says:

If Mostert doesn’t end up on the roster or practice squad, he’s going to help someone. He’s had a nice preseason.

  38. Lurker John says:

I can only hope that most of the defenders on the field the last quarter and a half will be gone after next week. Horrible performance.

  39. Lurker John says:

That was the most painful drive I’ve seen in years.

  40. Lurker John says:

That was pathetic. Please save time and cut everyone of those dudes. They didn’t make a play on that entire “drive.”

  41. Winder says:

lol. it was a good overall show today. lots to take away from this game

  42. alleykat69 says:

Discouraging to see 2 Viking drives for TD’s in like 4 minutes, then the 3 rd stringer bad ribs and all gets it done at the end.Very sloppy play down the stretch..

  43. unca_chuck says:

all in all a great looking game from the 1s.

Not so much the rest.. Boyer looked good n the pocket and hit passes under pressure.

    Almost as good as Heineken.

  44. rob says:

who the fuck is keller chryst ?

  45. rob says:

anyone know why we rleased brooks ?

  46. rob says:

    released

    • Lurker John says:

Age, cost, take your pick. I think Harold is younger and cheaper and the brass is at least reasonably confident he can get the job done. Me, not so much, but we’ll see. I’ll be his biggest fan if he pans out.

  47. rob says:

great news that armstead is looking like he’s starting to hit his stride !
It will be fun to see just what we have in beathard over the course of the season !

  48. Winder says:

Beathard is already showing glimpses of being a professional QB, he just needs some time in the pro game. He looks a hell of a lot better that Alex Smith ever did in his first few years. I truly think we should get rid of Hyde. He made a couple of nice catches but his running sucks. We got enough young RB’s that can catch the ball out of the backfield. Except for the first game of the season in the last two year this was the most enjoyable game I have seen in awhile.

  49. Nipper says:

One more practice game. Good to see the first team members play a decent amount. The rest are reserves and well…….it was practice.

  50. Irish Kevin says:

Well after last night I am feeling much better about my 8-8 prediction, they found the end zone!! I hope this was not a 1 and done, but they looked good last night. The D looked good too!!

  51. unca_chuck says:

Hoyer has actually looked good these last couple games, fumble notwithstanding. Pass rush looked a little better. Releasing Brooks was odd, but he’s getting up there and I guess they feel they have younger talent at that position. And he’s yet another previous regime guy to be let go.

  52. Nipper says:

Goodbye Vance…….another player walks the plank from seasons past.

  53. Nipper says:

Goodbye Vance……..another guy walks the plank off the roster.

  54. rob says:

well vance is gone . we got a fourth ! not bad ! Maybe Kittle will be a little better !

  55. Nipper says:

Baalke players walk the plank off the roster. There’s going to be a lot of blood letting to get down to 53 souls.

  56. Winder says:

    The purge is on.

  57. unca_chuck says:

Hyde looked decent. He is fighting for his spot as the guys like Brooks and VMcD are traded or cut.

    New thread is up…

  58. Lurker John says:

The first 2 drives against the Vikings ones, the O looked downright clinical. Hoyer just carved them up, spread the ball around and threw accurately. The ball to Goodwin was right on the money. FUCK that guy is fast. The other deep completion is a TD with a better throw. And he was being guarded by Trae Waynes, another burner (4.31 40 at the combine), and Goodwin just fucking blew past him. He’s an explosive runner with crazy acceleration and much better hands than you’d think based on previous reports. He could be primed for a break-out season.

If Hoyer can get the ball out front consistently enough, there’s going to be some TD’s thrown to that guy. The run game is still lagging, but I still have more confidence in Hyde than most guys here. Joe Williams will get up to speed [pun intended] soon enough. That competition should keep the fire lit under Hyde’s ass. Breida will be sniffing around in there too. Mostert is going to be a nice piece on both ST and in the backfield.

Pierre Garcon looks like he’s still every bit the stud. Love that guy’s Anquan Boldin-like mentality. He’s going to make a lot of tough catches this year, for TD’s and first downs. Love him.

The D did look pretty good and Foster is unbelievably fast closing out tackles. He just blows dudes up. Did any of you see the stretch play when he blew up [read, pancaked] Alex Boone? Just knocked him right on his keister. Awesome. Bow looked good. The D line looked pretty good, though that damn pass rush is in serious need of consistency.

My concern is the CB’s. The safeties look pretty good [how ’bout that Lorenzo Jerome?!], the backers are fine, but the corners really, really suck. Rashard has had a terrible 3 games and looks nowhere near as good as he was hyped to be. Reaser sucks ass and should be cut. Johnson? Give me a break, he’s a meatball. I see the Browns are shopping Joe Haden. Maybe the Niners take a look, but he’s pricey.

Cut downs on Saturday! GO NINERS!!
