Game Day! Days of Future Passed . . .

Passed? Get it? Yeah, shut it. Still and all, it is time for some football! The preseason kicks off in Ninerland with the newly refurbished San Francisco 49ers facing off against their once-ascendant and cast-aside QB in Alex Smith, and the Kansas City Chiefs. They are still being led by The Walrus, Andy Reid. A coach who has been on the doorstep so much, he now has ‘Welcome’ tattooed across his forehead.

Alex Smith on the other hand is entering his 12 season, yet he is just 32.  He’s still a guy who is careful with the ball, checks down a lot, puts up solid numbers, but can’t seem to get over the ‘game manager’ moniker, and can’t seem to get deep into the playoffs. Smith may have some gas left in the tank, but it may not be in KC for much longer. The Chiefs made a bold move and traded up with Buffalo to snag Patrick Mahomes with the 10th pick in the first round.

So, I’ll be watching him to see how he looks. Trubiscuit looked good in his Bears debut, DeShaun Watson looked solid as well, even De Shone Kizer played well, but this is after all, preseason. Still and all, a lot of exciting young quarterbacks are poised to make their mark.

Us? Well, we have Brian Hoyer. ZZZZZzzzzzz. But we do have an actual offensive minded head coach. One who can design pass plays better than run to a CB and sit down. Which seems to have been our plan since Mad Mike Martz left under mysterious circumstances.

Shit, anyone see Gaine Blabbert throwing lasers for the Cards? Too funny. He did cough up a fumble deep in his own territory as well, and missed a score of easy throws . . .

Speaking of missing throws, the new Jay Cutler jerseys are hot off the presses.

And in good news, Donavin Newsome was released from the hospital yesterday after being carted off the field in an ambulance after a collision with a teammate. He did suffer a concussion but did not incur any cervical spine injuries as initially thought. Everyone is saying he’ll be back on the field soon, but really, after getting a scare like that, you have to wonder if he will walk away from a game that is increasingly taking its toll on players.

  2. Irish Kevin says:

Since we all don’t know what to expect from these Niners, I decided to have a little fun with a Raider fan, I bet him the Niners would go 8-8 this year!! As far as watching this game, I will watch the first quarter then the Giants game, baseball that is.

  3. Nipper says:

Query: Will Beathard be the back-up?

  4. Lurker John says:

Per Shanahan, Beathard is doing well in camp and picking up the offense just fine. I think there’s no question he makes the 53. I think the Niners will initially carry three QB’s, with Barkley at #2. Mullens is bye, bye.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Curious in that he was rated as a low 5th rounder/high 6th rounder. I didn’t see him this high on anyone’s board. I thought we picked him early. I’m not really down on the guy, but I haven’t seen a lot of him. If he works out as a backup even, it was a great pick.

  6. Flavor says:

that was a really nice pick by Robinson. I lied at my blog Chuck, I’m watching.

  7. Flavor says:

wasn’t Lynch the one who got fat last year? He looks good today.

    • Lurker John says:

He came in overweight this year too, but he dropped the pounds from OTA’s to training camp. Same deal for Trent Brown.

      • Lurker John says:

I think he said he was around 270-275 last week, which is where the team wants him. Brown was around 355, which is, incredibly enough, where the team wants him. Big dude.

  8. Lurker John says:

This is the same officiating crew that threw about 10,000 flags last year. They are unbelievable. Unbelievably bad.

  9. Lurker John says:

If Shanny wanted and likes Beathard, that’s all I need to know.

  10. Lurker John says:

Barkley missed two easy TD’s in the first half, one to McDonald the other to Kendrick Bourne.

  11. Lurker John says:

There you go CJ. First TD of the year.

  12. unca_chuck says:

If anyone is wondering why the NFL is losing viewers, this game is a prime example. You have just a fucking ridiculous amount of flags thrown. The Niners TD was a non-penalty and the 15 yard personal foul was a bad call amid the calls on every punt and every kick.

We are fucking up wildly regarding the unforced penalties, but the PIs and PFs that are called willy nilly are aggravating to say the least.

  13. unca_chuck says:

The 2nd quarter there must have been 15 penalties.

  14. Lurker John says:

Mostert is gashing them in the 4th. Williams with an excellent first game. Niners with 180 yds on the ground with 2 minutes left.

  15. Lurker John says:

Hey, a win. I’ll take it.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Not much to write home about. The 1st team O and D were fair to poor and special teams were bad.

They played hard, though. The refs were in rare form though.

  17. unca_chuck says:

Good news? No turnovers. Aaron Lynch came to play and wasn’t fat & out of shape. Rashard Robinson got torched early and missed a tackle but redeemed himself with a nice pick.

  18. unca_chuck says:

I know we didn’t block very well on passes but we again didn’t even take a deep shot downfield.

  19. Winder says:

Overall, I liked the way we looked, We are a fucking fast team. I hope we can get something for Hyde, maybe a 3rd. We are not a downhill running team anymore. CJ showed a lot out there today and I know they were scrubsfor the most part but I can see why KS likes him. Baring injuries we should be better next week.

    • Lurker John says:

You really think Hyde is gone? By all accounts he’s having a great camp. My opinion is that he comes out the #1 back on this team.

      • Winder says:

John- Hyde always seems to have a great camp. But he doesn’t produce when the cards are on the table. Well over have the yards he got last year were all in garbage time when the game was already lost. Opposing D’s gave him the underneath yards.

      • Winder says:

        half

  20. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, hard to say what was going on with Hoyer playing only 4 plays but we are faster than last year. Thomas looked good, and Foster should have had a pic in the end zone. Pass rush was spotty but KC has a strong O line. Joe Williams looked really good.

  21. Nipper says:

For a practice game, I was entertained.

  22. Lurker John says:

Breida had his moments, but he fumbled and his game play overall didn’t match the hype about the camp he’s having. I think he hurt himself with this game.

  23. unca_chuck says:

The little KR Taylor looked good as well. ST was awful. What I didn’t like was the 17 penalties. Breida’s a long shot at best to make the team.

  24. unca_chuck says:

Hyde will be given a shot as he’s a very good runner. His problem is staying on the field. I don’t think they cut him, but he may lose his starting job.

    • Winder says:

I don’t think he is that good of a runner, he’s better off catching passes once he ‘s on the other side of the Dline. And, if he stays that will probably be why.

  25. unca_chuck says:

Time will tell. Some of it is how he fits with the new system, and how well he does overall.

Hard to gauge how good he is when he can’t stay on the field, and the fact that we were behind nearly every game last year and didn’t run as a strategy.

    • Winder says:

yeah, being a 49er last year must have been difficult. As far as Hyde goes I guess I just don’t like him. I don’t yet really know what our system is but if he doesn’t play better than he has I don’t see any reason to keep him.

  26. Lurker John says:

He’s in better shape this year and motivated to do well. With the caveat being his health, I think he has a breakout season. It’s in his financial interest to do do.

  27. NJ49er says:

Of all the guys I saw on Friday night, this kid was fun to watch.
Maybe he turns into our Welker/Edelman with some luck?

  28. alleykat69 says:

Definitely gonna be a different change of philosophy then in the past as the 49ers hire a female Katie Sowers as assistant HC..

  29. unca_chuck says:

Yeah if it wasn’t for the penalties on every fucking punt he should be useful.

  30. Lurker John says:

Taylor with a couple of nice catches and a couple of nice punt returns. I like him.

  31. Winder says:

I think Taylor not only makes the 53 but he’s gonna be a terror on defenses, He looks like a real special player. Put him and Joozcheck(sp) on the field at the same time and someone is gonna get open.
