News, News, is There Any News?

Nothing much to report in Ninerland by the Mud Flats, but the rumors are flying. We are going to trade for Jay (what, me worry?) Cutler. We are going to trade for Kurt (I bang my) Cousins. We are going to keep Colin (what, me care?) Kaepernick. We are going to keep Kaepernick and Catholic Ponder. We are going to draft Mitch (I’m not Blaine Gabbert) Trubisky. Or DeShaun (I’m not Colin Kaepernick) Watson. Or not a QB. Myles Garrett?

I’d lean toward that. But hey, in real news, we signed K’Waun Williams, the disgruntled cornerback from Cleveland. Side note, aren’t all Cleveland players disgruntled? Anyhow, he sat out a game of his own accord for an ankle injury last year, and was suspended for 2 games for conduct detrimental. Turns out he was right, and his ankle required surgery, so he missed the rest of last year. But there was a lot of interest in him.

The only reason this is even remotely interesting is that of the five teams courting him, the Niners, the Lions,  the Vikings, the Dolphins and the Jets, he picked the 49ers. It must be at least a little encouraging that he picked our locker room to hang his jersey.

In other news, Tom Gamble, our Assistant GM, and Trent Baalke footstool, agreed to mutually part ways with Jed and Co. In other words, John Lynch tackled him for a 9 yard loss. Can’t say I’m not disappointed to see him go, but whatever he did here, it wasn’t very good. Clean sweep and all that shit.

  1. Winder says:

Hard to say what is gonna happen at QB or anywhere else at this point. A true dead time. However, Lynch seems to have league wide respect so I imagine that other GM’s might work with him with trades and such. Looking forward to this years draft, should be fun.

  2. unca_chuck says:

    Free agents as well.

  3. Nipper says:

Get a QB and stop all the talking. Get an offense that works. Stop the talking. Get a Defense that can stop the run up the middle. Tell Jed York to shut the fuck up and go back to his mommy. Tear up the carpeting and delouse the whole building. Spray the hell out of everything. Get the stench of losing out of 49ers headquarters. Damn the talk full speed ahead.

  4. unca_chuck says:

    Don’t you mean de-York, Nip?

  5. unca_chuck says:

And in more unexciting news, the Niners sign WR DeAndre Carter.

Yes, THAT DeAndre Carter from Sac State. hey, they need bodies at WR, a position that Baalke treated like the plague.

  6. 12th Man says:

Niners signed DT Mitchell 4 years 16 mil.

    • Winder says:

Not impressed with his stats but sometimes those are deceiving. What I do like is we are making a move and picking up a defensive guy in FA. And, it’s only for 6.5 mil guaranteed in case he takes a dump on the field..

      • 12th Man says:

Supposedly a good run stuffer Winder. I like they got him now before the draft, it was a position of need and now they have more freedom with the skill positions.
Niners also gained a 4th round comp pick and have 10 total draft picks.

  7. unca_chuck says:

Dorsey’s likely gone now, and Ian Williams is already gone so this is a good move.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Nice article about the incoming defensive scheme, care of the mad link poster bakkenbuwwit.

    http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1657-long-look-what-expect-under-49ers-fit-scheme/

This was before the Earl Mitchell acquire, and he nails that we’d get a FA NT.

  9. Winder says:

The wheels are rolling. I don’t see us spending a whole lot on FA unless Cousins comes into play. I doubt that he will though. I think eithet Garapolo(sp) or Swhab(sp) are our best bets at this point. And hopefully we draft a QB or two also. I would trade down for a couple of 1st rd picks and take Mccaffrey because if we don’t take em Seattle probably will.

  10. 12th Man says:

    Barrows:
“The 49ers are contemplating moving Jimmie Ward from cornerback to safety, the position Pro Bowl player Earl Thomas plays for the Seahawks.”

I’m a big fan of that idea. Ward was decent at corner but is better used at safety. With the change of scheme, Ward could become a star player.

  11. Nipper says:

Holy BLEEP! Another day with Jed York as the “owner!” “You guys can’t fire me,” he chortles to everyone in Santa Clara.

  12. 12th Man says:

Nick Mangold cut by the JETS.

  13. Nipper says:

Another day of boredom on KNBR. When did the Giants get so boring? If another spring training interview with another boring ballplayer occurs I’m ready with a parade of BLEEPS! At one time ballplayers were characters with colorful personalities…. now………..they’re hopeless conforming bores. It’s like they’re the people in the suburbs who just want to be like everyone else…………..conformists. And now the Giants have to import a Korean to get some power in the line-up! Whatever happened to the Giants power hitting? God kill me now!

    • Winder says:

I dunno nip, we are 3-0 so far. I know ST stats don’t mean squat, but still, i’m just sayin.

      • Nipper says:

Spring training is practice………just practice. Of course if you attend those practice games they make you pay for practice!

  14. Nipper says:

And now the winner is………….what a screw-up! Don’t you love it when the rich and shameless screw-up on live TV? What a bunch of fat turkeys!

  15. 12th Man says:

The impression was that last years O line was OK and was definitely improved.

PFF grades on the 2 guards Garnett and Beadles says otherwise and they suggest a run at FA Kevin Zeitler, G, Cincinnati Bengals, 87.1 grade:

“Out of 73 qualified offensive guards last season, Joshua Garnett and Zane Beadles ranked 70th and 72nd, respectively, in terms of overall grade, with both struggling mightily in both pass-protection and as run blockers. Zeitler finished ninth among guards this season with a run-blocking grade of 83.1 and allowed just 19 total pressures, compared to the 38 surrendered by Garnett and the 36 allowed by Beadles”.

Also another big factor this year is the change from power to zone in the run game. RT Brown is not a good fit for that scheme as he is slow to get to the second level which is a must in zone. Could be significant O line changes this off season.

  16. 12th Man says:

GM Lynch is floating the idea of trading the #2 pick this year. Its all smoke and mirrors at this point but that is not a bad idea considering there is no QB worth the #2 (unless its via a trade package for a vet QB) and Myles Garret is probably gone, the team needs upgrades in almost every area.

    • Nipper says:

Yeah no QB in the draft is worth a number 2. Get as many upgrades as possible so trading down may be the best option.

  17. Winder says:

A lot of people are saying there isn’t a QB worth a top ten pick but a lot of mock drafts have 2 or 3 going by the 15th pick. I guess if Shanny sees something he likes and feels it’s worth a shot we just might take one at #2.

  18. unca_chuck says:

I think a lot depends on what Cleveland does, just in case they don’t take Garrett. Lynch wants to float the idea that the 2 can be had if the price is right.

Lynch will burn up the phone lines if Garrett goes at 1, and wait for the offers to come in.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Winder, I really don’t think we take a QB at 2. Despite the hype around Trubinsky, I don’t think they believe he or Watson are worth a 2. I could very well see trading down to 20 and getting either one. I’d love to get a WR though. We need to take a chance on an impact guy.

    • Winder says:

I would like to see us trade down and pick a WR and a RB in the first rd.

      • Winder says:

I gotta laugh because the only time I have been right about our 1st rd in the last 40 or 50 years was Patrick Willis. And, the only reason I nailed that one was Mike Singletary was at the combine and I knew he was a special player.

      • Nipper says:

Being wrong doesn’t stop the “other” blog, they blissfully get self-righteous about their picks like it means anything. HA! What pretentious fools!

  20. unca_chuck says:

    You tell ’em Nip!!

  21. NJ49er says:

Simply based on the ‘Ol Trade Value Chart, TN holds the exact value needed to ‘buy’ into our slot.
Whether they feel the need to do so is the ultimate caveat.
    Our 2 = 2600
    TN holds Picks 5/18 –
    Pick 5 = 1700
    Pick 18 = 900

    Can we be that lucky?
    Stay tuned.
My theory, in that scenario, would be to use Pick 5 on whomever they deem worthy. (Corey Davis/Reuben Foster/???)
Pick 18 (now FREE) + Our newly awarded RD4 Comp Pick (also FREE) could purchase Garappolo if wanted.
Viola….a QB who could conceivably step into action on Day 1.
A concern with Garappolo is whether he agrees to extend up front. He’s eligible for FA in ’18.
Don’t want to waste Picks on a 1yr ‘Rental’.

  22. Nipper says:

Hey we’re another day older and the Niners still haven’t signed a QB. Plenty of time I guess. I hope they pick well. Man those Baalke years were embarrassing. Ouch!

  23. unca_chuck says:

    Hey, I got Kentawn Balmer right. . . .

  24. unca_chuck says:

There’s a lot of sentiment out there to cut then re-sign Kappy on the cheap. I mean, really, we ain’t going anywhere anyway this year. . . The only teams I see that have interest in Kaepernick are Denver and the Jets.

  25. unca_chuck says:

Plus, Skeebie and the playpen would explode should Kaepernick come back.

That alone is worth the price of admission.
