Apropos of nothing, I just wanted to posit how I feel about the state of the 49ers as we currently stand.
The premise being, are the Niners in deep shit for having hired two inexperienced guys for the head coaching and general Manager spots?
Here’s what I think. For the head coach spot, I really think this worked in their favor. Kelly was a retread that fucked his way out of Philly, Jimmy T was unprepared, and Harbaugh wanted out when he saw the talent drain. The only guys I’ve really wanted these past couple years were Adam Gase and Kyle Shanahan. I didn’t want McDaniels, and the other hires this yer are all fliers or inside guys. Marrone? Anthony Lynn? Steve McVay? The rest? None have any HC experience. Shanahan has the fact that he has directed high-flying offenses at all his stops. Washington, Cleveland, and Atlanta, so he’s a proven offensive guy. Something this team DESPERATELY needs.
John Lynch is a HUGE shot in the dark. But maybe not as big a risk as one would think. This hire brings to mind 2 players who went from the field to the front office. Matt Millen and John Elway. One was an abject disaster, and one was a huge success. Ozzie Newsome also fall into this category, but he was in the Browns front office system for a number of years before becoming GM.
Milen is more like Iron Mike Singletary. A supreme player who couldn’t harness his football skills to translate into the coaching arena. Millen was the same. Great player, but in way over his head. The fact they kept him on for so long was ludicrous. He held that franchise back for 10 years.
Lynch? Well, like Elway, he went to Stanford so there’s hope he’s more than just a football player. He brings a near Hall of Fame career with him, and league-wide respect as a football player. He’s saying the right things about needing help and leaning on Shanahan and others for picking up the nuances of the job. He’s also got a big asset in Adam Peters, the head scout and talent evaluator for both NE and Denver for the past 10 years.
They still have a lot of hiring to do (like DC, ]OC if they decide to get one] and all the other sub-coaches. But as of now, I think the team is headed in the right direction.
Beyond that, they have 12 draft picks and $100 million in cap space, so they have the very likely possibility oif becoming relevant very quickly.
And I think the fact they both got 6 year deals says something about how the front office feels. One would hope Jed understands that he can’t keep fucking around with the whisper campaigns and the backstabbing. Jed had the upper hand over Baalke, Jimmy Bag-o-Donuts, and Kelly. He doesn’t have shit on Lynch or Shanahan.
Which is why I’m more happy with the fact that both these guys are outsiders more than anything else.

I would argue that the new front office is a strong as any in the league with Lynch, Peters, Mayhew and Gamble. As for Shanny the Younger, who was a better HC candidate?

I always liked Rathman as a player and a coach. But, I imagine coaching up Gore was a pretty easy thing to do. Once Gore left we sucked. Not blaming Rathman because the players have to execute. Just sayin.
I know they brought in another RB coach but I read they are trying to talk Rathman into staying by offering another position, did he leave?
Perhaps he can grab the Vice-President in charge of Popcorn Production position.
Or better yet being in charge of paperclip distribution is a sure winner!

Nothing but respect for Tom Rathman, he got the most out of “3 runs and a cloud of dust” then any other coach who tried to throw a ball!
I just watched film on Mitch Tribusky. If we take him I’m good with it. Shanahan has developed enough QBs that if he wants him we should get him. Question is, does he want him or Watson? I like them both if Miles Garret goes #1. I’d still take Garret over either.

Schaub has a year in Shanny’s system already. He could be a asset on the cheap, for a year or 2, while his successor is brought up to speed.
If they’re considering a reunion with Fangio next year, Jon Allen would be an ideal candidate to lure him back IMO.
If we pass on Allen, Fangio is likely to pound the table for him in Chicago I’d guess.
If we pass on him or, deal back, I’d be surprised to see Chicago pass on him at Pick 3.
And, as much as I’d normally cringe at Drafting a WR in the Top 10, I’d be willing to take a chance on Corey Davis this year.
See if Shanny feels the same way in April.
He’s about the only Offensive player I’d consider that high.
I could even see both JAX and TN grabbing Mike WIlliams and Corey Davis if they stand pat at Picks 3 & 4.
Should be an interesting chess match once Cleveland makes their move.

Winder the best case scenario, (for me) thus far, has been several additions to the FO to assist Lynch.
Hopefully it doesn’t get into too creating too many conflicts when the Draft arrives but, it beats the Baalke/Paraag duo thus far.

Seems a bit small in size from numbers I’ve seen (5’11″/6′) but, this kid has racked up over 600 Tkls, which pretty much laps the field by comparison.
He’s gotten a preliminary RD4 Grade already.
40 times are excellent as well for his weight – 4.65/243
Hoping he’ll get a chance to compete at the Combines in a few weeks.

NJ- I am all for anyone who helps us get off the curb. I am not sure I like the DC pick. but I do think the guys running the show know what they are doing. I think Cowboy had is right when he said that within 2 years there will be an 80% turnover. They gotta blow it up before they can build it back up. I do hope the Fangio rummer is true and he comes back next year.
Have to bring in talent and hopefully Lynch isn’t opposed to using free agency, not go crazy, but bring in maybe 4 or 5 solid additions in area’s of need. Makes the draft a lot easier to get BPA.
Even Cowboy says don’t go D line this year despite the depth of available players.
Aldon was never the same without J Smith keeping him clean. Still and all he’s a talent that needs serious help.
