State of the Good Ship 49ers . . .

Apropos of nothing, I just wanted to posit how I feel about the state of the 49ers as we currently stand.

The premise being, are the Niners in deep shit for having hired two inexperienced guys for the head coaching and general Manager spots?

Here’s what I think. For the head coach spot, I really think this worked in their favor. Kelly was a retread that fucked his way out of Philly, Jimmy T was unprepared, and Harbaugh wanted out when he saw the talent drain. The only guys I’ve really wanted these past couple years were Adam Gase and Kyle Shanahan. I didn’t want McDaniels, and the other hires this yer are all fliers or inside guys. Marrone? Anthony Lynn? Steve McVay? The rest? None have any HC experience. Shanahan has the fact that he has directed high-flying offenses at all his stops. Washington, Cleveland, and Atlanta, so he’s a proven offensive guy. Something this team DESPERATELY needs.

John Lynch is a HUGE shot in the dark. But maybe not as big a risk as one would think. This hire brings to mind 2 players who went from the field to the front office. Matt Millen and John Elway. One was an abject disaster, and one was a huge success. Ozzie Newsome also fall into this category, but he was in the Browns front office system for a number of years before becoming GM.

Milen is more like Iron Mike Singletary. A supreme player who couldn’t harness his football skills to translate into the coaching arena. Millen was the same. Great player, but in way over his head. The fact they kept him on for so long was ludicrous. He held that franchise back for 10 years.

Lynch? Well, like Elway, he went to Stanford so there’s hope he’s more than just a football player. He brings a near Hall of Fame career with him, and league-wide respect as a football player. He’s saying the right things about needing help and leaning on Shanahan and others for picking up the nuances of the job. He’s also got a big asset in Adam Peters, the head scout and talent evaluator for both NE and Denver for the past 10 years.

They still have a lot of hiring to do (like DC, ]OC if they decide to get one] and all the other sub-coaches. But as of now, I think the team is headed in the right direction.

Beyond that, they have 12 draft picks and $100 million in cap space, so they have the very likely possibility oif becoming relevant very quickly.

And I think the fact they both got 6 year deals says something about how the front office feels. One would hope Jed understands that he can’t keep fucking around with the whisper campaigns and the backstabbing. Jed had the upper hand over Baalke, Jimmy Bag-o-Donuts, and Kelly. He doesn’t have shit on Lynch or Shanahan.

Which is why I’m more happy with the fact that both these guys are outsiders more than anything else.

Mr. 20-20 hindsight, the guy who is scared of his shadow when it comes to predicting anything, poo poos the latest round of hires. An NoFear still pines for Teflon Mike Nolan. Jesus. Will the bromance never end?

If they start winning, he’ll do his usual disappearing act. He only makes hay when the shit hits the fan. That’s when he squats on it.

Too funny. Thing is, they have $100 million in cap space and 12 draft picks. They can do a lot of good in a short time.

IT’s about parity, NoFear. Watch and learn.

I would argue that the new front office is a strong as any in the league with Lynch, Peters, Mayhew and Gamble. As for Shanny the Younger, who was a better HC candidate?

This cry baby despair crap gets old. Jed York did a remarkable job of reeling in top talent despite the BS he himself had created and a shitty roster.

Speaking for myself I am excited to see what happens.

First round of coaching assistant hires:

49ers confirm six hires to Kyle Shanahan staff

  3. unca_chuck says:

I’m looking forward to a draft without Trent Baalke.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Hey nofear, which coaching candidate would you want?

    Besides Teflon Mike that is.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Oh that’s right. You only shit on things, NoFear. Like you famously disappeared when the Niners started winning. I wonder how many trees you have fertilized shitting in the woods.

  6. Nipper says:

Cleaning house……..even the equipment manager who survived numerous coaching changes is getting the heave-ho. This new coach is ruthless. He only wants his people.

  7. unca_chuck says:

That’s how it works, Nip. Even Rathman is out.

  8. Winder says:

I always liked Rathman as a player and a coach. But, I imagine coaching up Gore was a pretty easy thing to do. Once Gore left we sucked. Not blaming Rathman because the players have to execute. Just sayin.

  9. Nipper says:

Man that Oakley banning at MSG is really a big topic on national radio shows. The owner is taking a lot of heat from the media. So he fires his head of security for not nipping this Knick problem in the bud. OUCH!

  10. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, good guy, great player, but time to move on. Nothing but respect for Rathman. I used to have his jersey that I bought in 1988. I finally washed it a few years ago and it turned into dust.

    • NJ49er says:

      LOL…
My eldest is in mourning with this news Chuck.
He grew up idolizing Tommy and B.Y..
Time indeed marches on. Sad to see his reign end however.
      He’s a throwback.
      One of the ‘Originals’.

      • 12th Man says:

BY is the line coach with the Dolphins IIRC. Rathman is as good a RB coach as it gets, too bad really but the new guy has a great rep too.

  11. alleykat69 says:

Nothing but respect for Tom Rathman, he got the most out of “3 runs and a cloud of dust” then any other coach who tried to throw a ball!

  12. Berger says:

I just watched film on Mitch Tribusky. If we take him I’m good with it. Shanahan has developed enough QBs that if he wants him we should get him. Question is, does he want him or Watson? I like them both if Miles Garret goes #1. I’d still take Garret over either.

    • NJ49er says:

      Not me Berger.
      Not at Pick 2 anyway.
Neither guy is worth that slot IMO.
Drop back (maybe), and get an extra Pick?
Better talent on the Defensive side in the Top 10.
DE Jon Allen / ILB Reuben Foster make more sense to me in the Top 10.

Hoping TN wants to move into slot 2 with us, perhaps to get ahead of JAX?
      They’re holding Picks 5&18.
The perfect combo in terms of value to swap with us.
      Slot 2 = 2600
      Slot 5 = 1700 / Slot 18 = 900
I’d still entertain a move for Schaub and a developmental prospect later.
      See what comes….

      • Winder says:

I would go for that too.

      • NJ49er says:

Agree completely on Garrett, if Cleveland passes.
        Highly unlikely but… It’s Cleveland.
I’d still kick the tires on Garappolo too.
But, even in that scenario, I wouldn’t part with our 2nd Pick.
Schaub has a year in Shanny’s system already. He could be a asset on the cheap, for a year or 2, while his successor is brought up to speed.

  13. NJ49er says:

If they’re considering a reunion with Fangio next year, Jon Allen would be an ideal candidate to lure him back IMO.
If we pass on Allen, Fangio is likely to pound the table for him in Chicago I’d guess.
If we pass on him or, deal back, I’d be surprised to see Chicago pass on him at Pick 3.
And, as much as I’d normally cringe at Drafting a WR in the Top 10, I’d be willing to take a chance on Corey Davis this year.
See if Shanny feels the same way in April.
He’s about the only Offensive player I’d consider that high.
I could even see both JAX and TN grabbing Mike WIlliams and Corey Davis if they stand pat at Picks 3 & 4.
Should be an interesting chess match once Cleveland makes their move.

  14. NJ49er says:

Last I’d seen 12th, B.Y. was the DL Coach in Atlanta.
Be nice if Shanny brought him back.

    • NJ49er says:

My Son was at the game when Ken Norton broke his leg some years back.
Told me it was the sickest feeling he’d ever had in his life.
Ranks right up there with the LT/Theisman injury IMO.

      • unca_chuck says:

BY is one of my all time faves, NJ. But shit, that was a great day when Theismann went down. I’m not usually one to see guys get hurt, but Theismann was a huge dick, and I couldn’t take him at all. Even before he reached the pros. The ’83 playoff game was also a bitch. He whined to the refs so much that Lott got called on those BS holding calls.

      • NJ49er says:

Yeh Chuck, Joe was a Jersey guy, we knew him all too well when it came to ego.
He was always known as ‘Thees’ – man until he got his ego up in College and wanted to rhyme with Heisman.
He sure didn’t lack for self absorption.
        Complete douche actually.
In terms of injuries, both he and B.Y. suffered similar situations.
        Compound fracture kinda nausea.
My Son said Candlestick got so quiet that night, he could hear players on the sideline wanting to vomit.

    • 12th Man says:

my bad, it was Gators not Dolphins. he quit in 2013 and was out of football, his son died. Falcons are expected to hire him soon.

      • NJ49er says:

Yeh, he was in FL for a spell 12th.
Good dude, wouldn’t mind seeing him back where he belongs, in SF 😀

  15. NJ49er says:

Hope you guys are not in harms way, regarding the evacuation order in and around the Oroville Dam.
Geez, what a nightmare that could be.
    Be safe out there.

Expanded Justin Smith interview, he is still a straight shooter, good read:

    • NJ49er says:

Yeh 12th, I got him confused with his Brother the other day.
Saw one announced as ours, then going to LA. Thought he bailed on us.
      They LaFleur’d me 😀

      • 12th Man says:

Easily done NJ. Happy to see Shanny bringing his RB and WR coaches as well as some assistants so he isn’t starting over from scratch with new players and new coaches teaching both what he wants.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Aldon Smith is a case study in how to keep screwing up. Likely another year out suspended.

  20. Winder says:

Well, it looks like we have a lot of offensive coaches now and most of em are young. If this works it’s gonna be a thing of beauty.
As far as Aldon goes, stupid is as stupid does. The kid coulda been a contender.

    • NJ49er says:

Winder the best case scenario, (for me) thus far, has been several additions to the FO to assist Lynch.
Hopefully it doesn’t get into too creating too many conflicts when the Draft arrives but, it beats the Baalke/Paraag duo thus far.
Fingers crossed for football guys doing/making football decisions, without bean counter influences.

  21. NJ49er says:

Berger I’ve got a small school ILB for you to keep an eye open for.
    Connor Harris from Lindenwood.
Seems a bit small in size from numbers I’ve seen (5’11″/6′) but, this kid has racked up over 600 Tkls, which pretty much laps the field by comparison.
    He’s gotten a preliminary RD4 Grade already.
40 times are excellent as well for his weight – 4.65/243
Hoping he’ll get a chance to compete at the Combines in a few weeks.

  22. Winder says:

NJ- I am all for anyone who helps us get off the curb. I am not sure I like the DC pick. but I do think the guys running the show know what they are doing. I think Cowboy had is right when he said that within 2 years there will be an 80% turnover. They gotta blow it up before they can build it back up. I do hope the Fangio rummer is true and he comes back next year.

    • 12th Man says:

Have to bring in talent and hopefully Lynch isn’t opposed to using free agency, not go crazy, but bring in maybe 4 or 5 solid additions in area’s of need. Makes the draft a lot easier to get BPA.
Even Cowboy says don’t go D line this year despite the depth of available players.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Aldon was never the same without J Smith keeping him clean. Still and all he’s a talent that needs serious help.

    New thread is up.
