Goodbye San Diego, Hello LA?

The cesspool that is LA just gained another team. The San Diego Chargers pulled a figurative Art Modell and moved the Chargers to LA this morning at an NFL owners meeting that was supposed to be to grease I-5 for Prince Valiant sliming the Raiders to Vegas. Instead, we get Dean Spanos greed-heading his way north up the same I-5 to pile more gold bricks into his already fat coffers. La dee fricking dah. These guys are compensating for something.

Thing is, both LA teams hired head coaches. The perennial sucking Rams hired an offspring of one of our greatest execs, which pisses me off to no end, in Sean McVay. Grandson of John McVay. The man who worked hand-in-hand with Bill Walsh to build the dynasty that became the 49ers. I guess Yed (Cabana boy) York is too busy getting hair plugs to actually hire someone before all the coaches are gone.

As that happened, the newly minted LA Chargers hired our once-upon-a-time draft pick Anthony Lynn, a guy whose name has come up a few times what with all the recent coaching searches around here.

The Jags hired Doug Marrone. No biggie in itself, but their cagey move was to hire Tom Coughlin, their original coach, and 2x Super Bowl winning coach of the New York football Giants. Denver hired Vance Joseph, the defensive guru out of Miami. A bit curious with the offensive struggles in Denver. Buffalo hired Sean McDermott, another defensive coach, sort of the anti-Rex Ryan,  who evaluates what he has instead of forcing his team into his system. Another odd choice, as Anthony Lynn had the Buffalo offense clicking, and now they need to find an OC.

Meanwhile, we sit around and wait for our under-the-cabana troll to do something. Still waiting for the right moment (weeks?) to hire that GM? There’s no competition to finding someone so it shouldn’t be taking this fucking long, Jed.

I guess our situation is so fucked up that Jork can’t make up his mind. It makes you wonder how can this guy be good in business. Gotta be the silver spoon theory. Anyway, at this point I hope it’s the Wolf/Riddick,McDaniels ticket. Maybe there is another HC candidate out there with the ability to fix our offense and run this team, I dunno.

    • Nipper says:

I just hope Jed finishes his cabana and he gives the rest of us the finger for making fun of him. I’m waiting for the tractor and truck shows at Levi’s.

  2. ewisco says:

the question i’ve heard no answer to regarding Riddick (or anyone in this acorn hunt (thanks ann million)) is: can the guy judge talent? what’s in his background that says he has a clue how to look at tape of college guys and get the diamond in the rough. that can look past the hype of some man who plays boys and realizes the guy won’t make it in the nfl. that’s what the niners (and any organization) needs some place in the org. it could be the coach with a gm who trusts the coaches instincts. it’s usually the GM but i don’t care. Get someone who can judge talent. that was the word about McKenzie when the Raiders hired him out of green bay. a lot of people were telling the fair Prince that the guy knew what he was talking about when it came to talent. All i’m hearing about the furyan is that he’s a nice guy who’s well organized. well hell, i can do that.

    • Winder says:

That’s a good question, “can he judge talent.” There has to be some sort or track record on the candidates. Maybe just prior scouting records would give a clue. So far I am just going on what I have read and on other peoples opinions. We have to find a GM that can make our team better. But, I think like the draft there is a lot of hit and miss. At this point I think most anyone would be better than Baalky.

      • ewisco says:

i think what usually happens, and i believe it’s how mckenzie was identified, is you get a guy working for a good gm who gets a reputation for making a good call during the pre-draft workups. the gm ultimately drafts the guy who then does well and cements the reputation of the guy who picked him out of the haystack. but to get a really good guy, you would have to poach from one of the teams that have a good track record: green bay, pats, maybe pittsburgh. not the jets or bills or detroit. maybe seattle? but to identify that guy, you have to have good relationships with other gm’s or know people who do. that’s where the fair prince received a lot of good advice from people like madden and other old raiders who knew people all over the league. the dark prince has nobody like that helping him. i would think that people like number 8, who works as a broadcaster, would really be able to help. alas. i’m drawing a blank on other resources but i’m sure you guys could figure out who could help. but since he won’t use them, it’s all an exercise in self gratification.

  3. ewisco says:

chuck, maybe you should put up a new thread. i seem to have killed this one.

  4. unca_chuck says:

This waiting for something to actually happen is slowing shit down

  5. unca_chuck says:

So, everyone has filled their coaching spots except for us. Then agaon, we are (hopefully) waiting for the cream of the playoff crop.

Josh McDaniels is itching to get a 2nd shot at coaching after his trainwreck in Denver, and Kyke Shanahan is still driving the Falcons.

Of the 2 I prefer Shanahan. Maybe we can get his dad to be the GM. Not my best case scenario, but light uyears better than where we are.

  6. Nipper says:

Apparently there’s little interest in the Chargers being in LA. They’re getting roasted by the media right from the beginning. Spanos is the owner and is disliked as a greedy billionaire in San Diego. The public hated giving him any money for a stadium. The NFL is getting a greedy demanding reputation and people are getting fed-up with their demanding ways. Looks like the Raiders can go to Vegas if the owners approve and now why shouldn’t they approve? What’s in Oakland? Only fans and no new stadium exists now. The NFL wants stadiums built and paid for by the taxpayers so their billionaire owners can reap the rewards. This is a very powerful and demanding sports cartel.

    • Winder says:

And their product is nothing like real football anymore. But, the people keep buying. I have a feeling Jed is gonna screw this whole thing up.

      • Nipper says:

That’s Jed’s specialty so far, screw the whole thing up. Jed’s probably looking for a coach that will work as a volunteer as all the coaches fired are getting paid to sit.

  7. unca_chuck says:

la can’t support one team let alone 2. Fucking Oklahoma City would be a better destination. Those stadia will be half empty next year. Spaons is s a whore.

All these eowners are killing the league by shunning Oakland StL and SD in the name of greed.

  8. NJ49er says:

My theory is that Tweedledee and Tweedledum-A$$ are sitting on McDaniels, knowing already that Riddick would come along.
Watch McDaniels throw a middle finger in Jed’s face and screw the entire ‘plan’ right in the bunghole.
So much for ‘the GM will pick his HC’ theory.
The nitwits are already banking on what they expect to happen.

  9. NJ49er says:

Think of all the Coaching/Football Execs they could spend their money on to improve the football side of the ‘business’.
Instead, they’re sitting on tons of Cap Cabbage, while paying Ex-HCs to fish.
Gotta keep a little scratch under the mattress too, to settle Cabana grievance lawsuits too I guess?

    • NJ49er says:

But…our FO is stacked with Financiers and Marketing Elites Du Jour.
      Football Ops? What’s that mean?

  10. unca_chuck says:

Nice theory, NJ, but that would be career suicide for McDaniels. He already hosed his earlier shot with Denver, and lying to the greater community about wanting to work here would be very stupid.

    • NJ49er says:

Chuck it comes down to whether Jed/Paraag can hand over the control of football Ops.
Too much micro-management taking place IMO.
Let the new hires run the show and, give them 3yrs (minimum) before deciding to pull the plug.
Having Paraag sitting at the top of the food chain does us no favors.
Spend the Cap money as the Coaches see fit.
Stick the analytics where the sun don’t shine too.
All the other HC vacancies are filled for now at least.
Whichever guy is willing to come work for Butt Heads Inc should be able to name their terms at least.
Whether they get those terms is completely up to the Butt Heads.

  11. Nipper says:

New England sucked and still won going away. That’s what the Niners have to strive for. That’s the goal! Be like the Patriots.

  12. Irish Kevin says:

I just read that Cable is a run orientated coach and that would fit with the Niners way. If they hire Cable I am not going to buy tickets ever again. I am so sick of 3 and outs due to running the ball!!! Get some young dude in there that knows the NFL! Get rid of the running game!!

    • alleykat69 says:

Jed is such a imbecile, Winning with Class is what we need! Yeah right little buckaroo,Tom Cable broke his own hired assistant’s jaw, beat up 2 women, but wtf does Jed give a shit about that are the fans perspective?
, he’ll no! And the real joke,Cable is worse then Tomsula who at least had respect from his players where Cable is just a scumbag with no credibility!!

  13. Irish Kevin says:

After watching the Packers/Cowboys game, anyone want to debate this is a passing league and the good teams only run when they have to!! The run first play calling is so out dated it is worthless!!

  14. NJ49er says:

    BOHICA Jed –
Josh McDaniels conflicted about taking 49ers job
    http://tinyurl.com/hv2auaj

    • NJ49er says:

Wonder why SF can’t climb out of their raging dumpster fire?
The Owner, and their cheap A$$ impatient practices, scare the sh!t out of anyone remotely competent from taking the risk of signing on.
Jed will simply settle for anyone willing to take the risk.
How much do I hate this douchebag?

      • 12th Man says:

Doesn’t seem very impatient to me, no GM or HC, last team standing.

      • NJ49er says:

The impatience has been related to the revolving door of HCs in recent years 12th.
I think it’s a detriment now when seeking yet another HC candidate.
Jed needs to step away and give the football guys some time to get themselves in sync IMO.
Too much FO interference is how I see it.

  15. NoFear says:

There’s no debate. The reality is, if you can’t run, you’re done. Every team can shut down a one dimensional offense. Every team but the 49ers, anyway.

DAL, ATL and NE are among the top rushing teams and PIT has as many yards rushing as passing so far tonight and they are a top passing team.

    • Irish Kevin says:

They rely on the pass when the game is on the line!!! Frank Gore had another career year, is he in the playoffs, hell no!! You don’t know what you are talking about

      • 12th Man says:

Kevin I’m with you, mostly…..DAL, ATL, NE AND PIT are all top tier running stats teams and there is no doubt they have to be able to run the ball effectively, but they also have something else in common, prolific QB’s and dangerous WR’s. Those running games don’t work just by themselves anymore, they are successful BECAUSE of the prolific passing attacks or at least the real threat of it.

Its no longer a running game first and pass off of that league, its a passing game first and run off of that league and all 4 teams left use that system, in fact I would argue all the playoff teams use that.

Yes you need balance, but passing has to be the higher priority in terms of what a defense needs to protect against first or it will be like it has been against the Niners, stacked boxes and everything in the first 15 yds of scrimmage. Ultimately nothing works well enough.

    • NJ49er says:

      Agree NoFear.
Gotta have balance in this game.
Should be a pair of good games next Sunday.
All 4 QBs playing well at the right time.
Gotta give the edge to ATL on a fast indoor track too.
I don’t think GB has enough coverage depth to play Nickel and stop the Falcons’ ground attack.
      We’ll see?
Like the outdoor venue between Pittsburgh/NE too. That’s football!

  16. alleykat69 says:

    NJ,
The douchebag more then likely will settle with Tom Cable since breaking your own hired assistant’s jaw, and throw in 2 women he beat up as well, still Qualifies as a “Winning with Class Hire”!

    • Nipper says:

Come on, building with class is the Jed formula in his Los Altos Hills home. Build a cabana that blocks your neighbor’s view and go to court to fight for it all the while your football team crumbles into a horrible season. Then take your sweet time in getting new people to replace the former ones who are under contract. That’s the Jed way!

      • NJ49er says:

The idea of working for Jed causes much consternation among viable applicants.
‘Do I ruin any credibility I might have at this point in my career by working for Jed or, should I drive for Uber, until something better comes along?’

    • NJ49er says:

      Alleykat69, you nailed it 😀
I think this Pu$$y we inherited as our Captain of the Titanic, brushes his teeth with Vagisil.
I truly despise everything about him.
He’ll settle for anyone at this point, just because of the dumpster fire he fueled, by being an impatient, petulant little douchebag.
Tweeter and The Money Man go shopping once again, scouring the Earth for the next Bill Walsh.
      God help us.

  17. unca_chuck says:

I don’t want McDaniels anyway so he can conflict away. This waiting around shit is getting old though.

  18. unca_chuck says:

It still depends on the GM. All this talk is just that. They get a respectable GM and coaches will follow.

    • NJ49er says:

Which causes me concern, as we’re the only team looking for one Chuck.
In my cynical view of the Jed/Paraag MO, they seem to be trying to get them paired before the process concludes, in ‘official’ terms.
Still betting on Riddick/McDaniels unless, (or until), McDaniels bails.
Micro-management at work. They can’t seem to help themselves.

      • NJ49er says:

I did read that Jed wanted the GM to pick his HC. Didn’t you? 😀

      • NJ49er says:

        You’re Josh McDaniels.
Working for one of the best Organizations in the NFL, with a proven SB caliber QB.
You have an option to go to work for Jed. A petulant little weenie who changes HCs as often as he changes his mind, with no GM, no QB, and 3 HCs fired before you in 3 years.
Now, you have to convince an entire Coaching Staff to come along with you, in order to give yourself an inkling of a chance, to succeed.
        Decisions, decisions, decisions.
From the Penthouse to the Out House?
Takes a major leap of faith I’d think.

      • NJ49er says:

Chip Kelly was ‘going to be here a long time’.
        Until he wasn’t.

  19. NJ49er says:

It didn’t take Coughlin long to give OL Coach Pat Flaherty a job in JAX.
Both worked for NYG before Coughlin got axed.
Football guys stay connected and, very much loyal to one another, in this business.

  20. NoFear says:

Was the question pass first or do away with the running game?

Coach Mike Martz thought every play was a pass play, too.

Establishing the run game gives you the ability to pass without five or six DBs blanketing your receivers or blitzing your passer.

Having a rushing threat gives you play-action passes. You know those chunk plays everyone loves. It also gives you the ability to disguise your plays with personnel packages and formations and forces the defenders to guess, which results in hesitation.

The run game gives your offense a chance when the field conditions and weather makes passing tough or nearly impossible.

Without the run game how do you close out a game you’re leading or burn time off the clock? Three and outs taking 20 or 30 seconds?

What do you do with no four minute offense? More three and outs and depend on your exhausted defense to save your ass?

An offense that only passes is as weak as an offense that only runs.

The big job of the opposing defense is to make you one dimensional and easier to defend if possible. Doing that for them is hardly a winning solution.

    • NJ49er says:

Greatest Show on Turf for Martz.
An indoor venue will do that for you, of course.
GB/Buffalo/NE/Pittsburgh in January? Not so much.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Tell me No Fear, how many SB the Niners won behind Frank Gore? Oh yeah None, 0, Zippo!! Let’s see one the the great passers in the league, Tom Brady, how many SB does he have…tell me again how the run wins SB’s. you are nothing but a troll promoting the running game the way you do.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Oh and Martz won how many SB with the Rams and Kurt Warner, he couldn’t pass the ball at all.

  21. NJ49er says:

I’m anxiously awaiting The Tweeter and The Money Man NFL board game.
A new age twist on the Ouija Board game.
Rich kids, who can only dream of running their own NFL franchise, can sit at the Country Club, and immerse themselves in NFL analytics and hiring practices, in an almost real life NFL FO seance, just like they do in SF.
    I smell a hit!
Better file for that patent soon Jed!

  22. NJ49er says:

Hey Jed, Mommy just called. Hate to tell you this but…..
    You’re a Bastard.

  23. NJ49er says:

Here’s a phase of restructuring the Rams are reported to be looking into.
Too bad Jed & Co didn’t think to do it. (3 HCs later).

Rams will turn attention to possible front-office improvements
